Chapter 338: 338. Better Luck

Mauve stared down at her feet. She was dressed in a pair of pants, some long sleeved shirt and a big ol’ boots.

She particularly liked the boots. She couldn’t guess what animal skin they were made from but it was very comfortable.

The clothes felt warm and a little silky against her body. She didn’t recognize the pants but at least they fit. To be honest she only cared about what she was wearing because it was going to be a long journey.

Her hair was tied back, out of her face, and in a bun. There were a few loose strands but none that bothered her. Mill had been afraid she would tie it too tight and Mauve would end up being uncomfortable the entire trip.

"I can’t believe you’re really leaving," Mill said, staring at her with her hands clasped together.

"I suppose I am," Mauve replied and returned her gaze to the clothes.

"Are they comfortable?"

Mauve lifted her head and smiled subtly, "Never wore anything better."

"I am glad. Your bags are packed and ready to go, Danag sent some guards to come pick them up before I even woke you up."

"Oh," she replied, looking to the corner of the room where her bags had been stacked. It was empty, she wondered why she didn’t notice it before now.

She knew exactly why, she was still in a daze and was currently doing everything on autopilot. The last thing she would be looking out for was her bags.

"Is there anything you would like me to adjust or add?" Mill peered at her.

Mauve shook her head without looking at Mill. "No, I am fine."

"Alright," Mill said and took a step forward with a scarf in her hand. Mauve was forced to raise her head to look at her.

"It is too warm for a jacket just yet but this scarf should keep you warm and you can wear the jacket as the night progresses."

Mauve nodded and let the vampire wrap the material around her neck. It wasn’t thick, it served the purpose of a scarf that it did as a neck warmer.

Mill tied it to the front, making it as loose as possible. It partly hung off her shoulders but not enough to fall.

Mauve looked at the tied scarf and then at Mill, "Thank you," she whispered.

"You’re welcome. Mister Herbert already prepared your breakfast separately. I figured you wouldn’t want to eat in the dining hall."

"Actually," she said, grabbing the scarf as she looked at Mill. "Could you pack it up? I don’t have much of an appetite right now."

Mill frowned, "I’d advise you to eat something. It’s a long way back."

"It is for the same reason I don’t want to eat. I fear I might throw up if I should start this journey on a full stomach," she replied.

Mill squinted her eyes, "How about some snacks? I could get you something light, a fruit, or whatever you might like."

"I am fine, Mill. I had a proper meal before sleeping. I am sure going a few more hours without eating won’t affect me and it’s not like I am not eating, I’m just not eating right now."

Mill sighed, "If that is what you want then I will pack it up for you."

"Thank you, Mill."

"I will let Danag know you’re ready."

"I suppose. Have you seen Jael?" She asked, looking at Mill with big eyes.

"No," she replied.

"I don’t think he is seeing me off, is he?"

"I don’t know, Mauve. I could try to find him if you want."

"Nah, don’t bother. I think it’s better this way," she said and turned her face away. "Please, let Danag know I am ready to go."

"Sure thing," Mill heard Mauve say and it wasn’t until she heard the sound of the door closing that she turned her head to look at the door.

Mauve stood for a couple of minutes in the middle of her room, unsure of what to do. She didn’t want to just leave like that.

Without thinking too much about it, she headed for the connecting door. With her heart in her throat, she pushed the door open.

Mauve winced at the darkness that hit her as she opened the door. The only source of light in the room was the candle by the bedside and it looked like it would die any minute.

Jael wasn’t in here, she had known as soon as she opened the door. She didn’t even know what she would have told him if he was but she just wanted to see him, at least to say a proper goodbye.

She closed the door shut without stepping into his room. She walked to her door and walked out of it.

Without hesitation, she headed left, down the path, and at the end of it was her destination, the study. Where it all started.

She took the step one at a time, the fear in her heart strong. At this point, she was already by the door of his room, a couple more steps and she would be in front of his study.

"Mauve," she heard a voice. Mauve froze immediately. This person has never called her name before now, she would have sworn, she didn’t know it.

"Lady Jevera," she said, turning around. She was moving closer to the vampire before she realized what she was doing.

Lady Jevera was standing almost in front of the door to Mauve’s room. One of her hands was on her waist while the other flipped her red hair out of her face.

She stopped a few feet away from her, Jevera had not moved an inch. "Is something wrong?" She asked.

The vampire looked her up and down, taking in what was clearly traveling clothes. Mauve felt smaller and for a second she wondered if she should have remained in her room.

"You’re going somewhere?" Jevera asked sarcastically.

"Yeah," Mauve said as nonchalantly as she could.

"I knew you wouldn’t last but I didn’t think he would be done with you so quickly. Poor you," she said, her eyes looking Mauve up and down.

Mauve didn’t respond, she didn’t know what to say. She fiddled with her scarf, praying that Jevera would say whatever she wanted and be on her way.

She couldn’t take any of this anymore. Maybe leaving the castle was the best option. There was nothing that would have come out of it anyway.

He would have eventually had to pick a mate and she has heard it more times than she needed to, that it couldn’t possibly be her.

Maybe he was doing her a favor by chasing her away, this way she wouldn’t have to see this.

"You can imagine my surprise when I found out Jael was making you dresses. Only to discover they are farewell clothes..." she paused and chuckled. "To think I saw you as a threat but no one knows Jael better. You couldn’t possibly deal with him."

"You’re right," Mauve said with a straight face, looking Jevera right in the eye. "Now that I am out of the way, you should be able to get what you want."

Mauve saw Jevera’s expression falter before it darkened. The quick flash of doubt was enough to boost her self-esteem.

Mauve didn’t hate Jevera, she never really did. In some ways, she could almost sympathize with her now that she knew what it was like to want someone who never put you first.

"Yes," Lady Jevera said but it sounded more like she wanted to convince herself. "It would be best if you didn’t come back, for your own good."

"I don’t know if they told you but I am not coming back. You don’t have to worry and I guess you were right, he is pretty fickle." She said and arched her head to the side as the tears flowed down her face.

Mauve watched the shock that passed Jevera’s face and the vampire looked speechless.

"Mauve," she heard Mill’s panicked voice calling from the stairs. "What’s happening? Danag’s ready to leave."

"I will be right there," she called out, wiping her face. "I will be on my way now," she gave a small curtsey. "Hopefully, you’ll have better luck this time."

Mauve didn’t mean half the things she said, she hoped they would crash and burn. However, she couldn’t help but think it was best to leave things on this note.

There was no point fighting a losing battle. She would take that lesson from Jevera. She didn’t want to be the type of person fighting over someone who didn’t want her.

She rushed past Jevera without her saying another word and rushed to Mill who was coming toward her.

"What was that about?" Mill asked with a worried face as she glared at Jevera’s back.

"She wanted to wish me a safe trip," Mauve said with what she hoped was a believable smile.

Mill’s eyes bulged, "Really?" She asked, looking between Jevera and Mauve. Jevera still had their back turned to them.

"Yes," Mauve replied, pulling her toward the stairs. "Let’s go now. We don’t want to keep Danag waiting."
