The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 329. Damage Control
Chapter 329: 329. Damage Control
Mauve watched Jael go with a stunned expression on her face and didn’t stop looking until the door closed behind him.
She turned her gaze away from the door to see Mill looking at her pity in her eyes. She didn’t acknowledge it, there was no need for Mill to look at her like that.
She ate quickly, trying to finish up what was left on her plate, completely zoning out everything else.
"Would you like to leave now?" Mill asked as Mauve wiped her lips.
"Yeah," she mumbled and stood to her feet before the vampire could stretch out her hand to help her. She headed for the door in haste.
They get to the door of her room and even though Mill was the only leading she looked hesitant about stopping in front of Mauve’s door.
"My room," she called out just as Mill was about to pass it. The vampire stopped abruptly and pushed the door open.
It was only right for her to take the initiative, something told her not to wait for Jael. She didn’t know what this was about but she would try and not let it affect her.
Mill held the door open for her as she walked into the room. "Mill," she called out. "Could you get my bath water ready?"
Mill frowned, "Are you sure about that?"
"Yeah, I am. I want to retire early and I don’t think Jael will be retiring to his room anytime soon."
"Alright as you wish. It has been a minute since I helped you with your bath," Mill replied with a smile before withdrawing from the room.
Mauve dropped to the bed like a rock. She sat on the edge with her dress gathered as she waited for Mill. At this point, she wasn’t sure whether to remain in her room or not.
However, doing that would mean that she had accepted that there was some fight going on. She would just take her bath and see what happened.
Mill returned faster than she had expected the vampire to and she was given a quick bath. She didn’t bother washing her hair as that would have taken too long to dry and all she wanted to do now was lie down.
As she lay on Jael’s bed waiting, Mauve let her thoughts run. She wasn’t particularly tired considering she had been lying down most of the day but Jael’s current attitude was mentally draining.
Maybe he was just very busy and she was over reading. She sighed and closed her eyes. She wasn’t sleepy and if he didn’t take too long, she would probably be awake when he came back.
Mauve’s eyes flew open as she felt pressure on the bed beside her. She must have fallen asleep at some point. She turned around to see Jael getting into bed.
"You are awake," he sounded a bit shocked.
"I suppose," she replied and dragged herself to a sitting position, afraid that she might fall back to sleep. "That took a while."
"Yeah," Jael said absentmindedly as he got into bed. He placed his head on the pillow and did not attempt to reach out to her.
"What happened? I didn’t see you all day."
"Was busy," he said and closed his eyes.
Mauve blinked at his response, at least he should expatiate about how busy he was but even after she remained silent for a couple more seconds, he didn’t divulge more information.
"I thought as much but you usually find a bit of time..." She let the rest of her words trail out when she realized he didn’t look interested in the conversation.
"I had a bit of a rough day, Mauve. Can it wait until I wake up?" He said and closed his eyes.
"I was just trying to ask how your day went."
"As I said, it was busy and a bit stressful. That’s pretty much it," he replied and turned his back to her.
"I suppose..." her voice dropped to a whisper, "Sleep tight."
He merely grunted his reply and Mauve spent the next minute staring at his closed eyes and the back of his head before pulling herself down and lying on the pillow.
She pulled the cover sheets over herself and held it a little closer than she needed to. To say her thoughts were all over the place was an understatement.
It took a lot to quiet them down and finally get some sleep. Mauve didn’t know what time she fell asleep but she did know that by the time she woke up, Jael was nowhere to be found.
She blinked at her discovery, rubbing his side of the bed which was empty. She had not expected less but it didn’t make the stinging bearable.
She sat up and just stared at the empty space. Was there more to this? Was asked to go home really that bad? Did she do something wrong?
It was hard to even ask all these when Jael avoided her like a plague. There was no way she could let it remain like this. It not only felt very disrespectful but it hurt.
It wasn’t like she had made an absurd request. Why couldn’t they talk about this like adults? Was she really that insignificant that if it didn’t align with his wants, it was completely off the table?
Mauve shook her head, she had to get busy, and sitting and brooding only made her think terrible things. There was only one way to do this and that was to confront Jael.
She didn’t like that she had to do it but she wouldn’t sit back and let this drag on. It was absolutely uncomfortable and she preferred it when they were on the same team.
She didn’t even have to go back. They could just talk it out. It wasn’t like she had to, as much as she was curious to know what this was about, it wasn’t a must.
She got out of bed and made her way to her room. Mill wasn’t there and she ended up having to pull on the string to alert the servants of what she needed.
Barely ten minutes later, a loud knock was heard and Mill walked in with her bath water. "Mauve," she said with an unnecessarily bright smile.
"Mill," Mauve replied, stiffly.
"I didn’t think you would be awake yet, I would have been in your room earlier," Mill explained walking further into the room.
"It’s fine, considering all I did yesterday was sleep, it is expected that I would be awake early today."
"You’re probably right, I forgot to put that in account."
"It’s alright, you already do too much for me and it has been a while since I used the string, felt nice to."
"Yeah, it has," Mill chuckled and placed the bathtub in the corner. "Do you have any plans for today? I will accompany you wherever you want to go. We can even go outside if you want."
"What?" She asked, blinking rapidly in shock.
"Yes, the Primus gave his permission. He said he would be even more busy today and if there was anywhere you wanted to go, I should escort you. I jokingly mentioned outside and he agreed."
"He agreed? Jael agreed?" Mauve’s face held total disbelief.
"Yes, he did mention that at least either Damon or Erick should tag along."
Mauve frowned, for some reason whatever this was, she didn’t like it. Was he trying to distract her from the current issue? Was this damage control? She hated how she could never figure out what he was thinking.
"I don’t think there is any need for that. I don’t want to interrupt the work going on outside and it would be too dark for me to enjoy being outside anyway. I will probably go to the garden."
Her plants needed weeding and trimming. She still had not gotten around to doing that, something kept popping up apparently.
"Alright, I guess that works. Aha, that reminds me, Yasmin is done fixing the ripped dress and will bring it for you to try on after the first meal. She also said she should be done with the livid-colored dress by the end of today."
"Are you serious? Isn’t that a little too fast?" Mauve asked.
"Nope, she can finish two to three dresses in a day if she puts her mind to it, and since it’s on the Primus orders she probably wouldn’t do anything else until she is done with the dresses."
"That’s a lot of fabrics, anyone would be worn out."
"Relax, she isn’t doing it alone. She has all the help she needs."
"Oh," Mauve said.
Mill chuckled, "Yes oh. Now, let me help you with your bath."
"Thank you," Mauve replied and let the vampire lead her to the tub.
"Are you and the Primus fighting?" Mill asked as she got into the tub.
Mauve sighed as she sat in the big bowl, spilling water out the sides. "I wouldn’t say it’s a fight."
"What then would you call it?" Mill asked.
"A slight disagreement."
