The Vampire King's Possession
Chapter 328. A Mere Human

Chapter 328: 328. A Mere Human

Mauve blinked at Mill who stood over her by the side of the bed. "What?" She asked sitting upright, her brain was slow to catch up with her body so she had not heard what Mill said.

"Sorry, I shouldn’t have bombarded you with all those words when you’re just waking up."

"It’s fine," she replied, rubbing her eyes. "It’s time for the second meal, right?"

"Yes."

"Okay," Mauve said and started to get out of bed. "Where is Jael?"

"That’s what I wanted to tell you about."

Mauve turned her head to look at Mill who was still standing by the side of the bed. "Tell me what?"

"The Primus won’t join us for the second meal and he asked me to accompany you in his stead."

Mauve blinked and turned her head away, "Did he say why?"

She couldn’t remember the last time they didn’t go for a meal together, except when he was away. Was he avoiding her? It was ridiculous to think that.

"No," Mill said, shaking her head a little.

"Is that so?" She said and walked to her dresser.

"Did something happen?"

Mauve shrugged, "Not particularly," she replied and picked up the brush.

Mill rushed to her and pulled it out of her hand, "Let me help you with that."

"Thank you," she said and sat on the chair, staring into the mirror.

There were sleep lines on her face but she didn’t care. The only reason she even bothered with her hair was because of how frizzy it would be if she stepped out with bed hair.

The second meal was a blur and Mauve could barely remember the details. The only thing that stood out to her was the fact that she thought there was something off with Jael’s personal guards.

It wasn’t anything noticeable and it was probably just her mind running about. She had paid it no mind and had just tried to enjoy the meal even though Jael not being there had left a sour taste in her mouth.

Mill on the other hand had been very helpful, she had taken note of Mauve’s mood and had tried to cheer her up as best as she could.

Unfortunately, as much as Mauve appreciated the effort and the place it was coming from, she rather be left alone and she made that very clear after the second meal was over.

The last meal came and Mill was the one to take her there. Mauve tried to keep a straight face about this. There was no doubt in her mind, he was avoiding her.

"Where is Jael?" She asked Mill.

The vampire looked a bit stressed, "I was told he would be running late and that I should go with you to the dining hall."

"That’s fine," Mauve replied and walked past her, out the door.

She walked into the dining hall with Mill behind her. She walked to her seat and sat in. Corbin and Otis were already at the table but none of the guards were in yet.

Maybe they did have some meeting and Jael wasn’t avoiding her. She removed the thought from her mind, there was no point thinking about it, she wasn’t going to come up with an answer by herself.

She raised her head to see Corbin look away from her. His face was in a terrible state, however, she could easily see that it was starting to heal and there would probably be no sign of it in about a week.

Vampire healing capabilities needed to be studied. It was always amazing to her. Even with the supposed worst injury they could get, they still healed faster than a human did from bruising.

"Mill," Otis suddenly called out.

Mauve was indifferent to the redhead and hadn’t really thought about him. He seemed to ignore her and to her, that was better than anything else.

Mill turned slowly, her expression clearly showing disdain, "Yes."

"I understand that you’re estranged from your father and he wants nothing to do with you but I never thought it would be enough for you to fall this low. A human caretaker, I never thought that day would come. I guess some Lords do exhibit traits the lower bloods do if you hang around them long enough."

Mauve breath caught in her throat as her eyes widened. Mill merely scoffed and turned her gaze back to Mauve.

The door flew open and Jael walked in and behind him were his three personal guards. The occupants at the table immediately rose to their feet while Mauve remained seated.

For the first time since she laid eyes on him, Otis’ eyes met hers. His disapproval glared at her and she could tell that if he could, he could have done something about it.

She turned her face away from him immediately, not liking the goosebumps that popped out of her arms at his stare

"Sire," they called, bowing slightly.

The guards rushed to their seats just as Jael sat on his. She tried to meet his eyes but he wouldn’t look in her direction.

They sat down and Danag called her name. She smiled sweetly at him and just as she wanted to reply, Otis’ words interrupted.

"Your grace, aren’t we all supposed to be on our feet whenever you step into a room? As the Primus we all should acknowledge your presence." Otis said, his face determined, he obviously felt pride in his dispute.

Mauve didn’t need anyone to tell her he was talking about her. She bit her lips, why did she ever think he was likable?

"I supposed," Jael said halfheartedly as he stared at his dish. He picked up his cutlery preparing to dig in.

"There are no exceptions to this, so why would a mere human remain seated while vampires are on their feet?"

A lot of vampires did have issues with the fact that she always remained seated but this was the first time anyone has ever brought it up and in such an insulting manner too.

Mauve didn’t know what to say, it wasn’t even like she had any problems doing it, however, when it turned out to be a hassle she had stopped and Jael never complained.

Jael dropped the cutlery he had just picked and it made a loud sound as it hit the plate. Mauve jerked and from the corner of her eyes she could see Danag close his eyes tightly. She couldn’t help but brace herself for what was to come.

"Some nerve you have, Otis! You come to my castle and give your damn opinions, mouthing off like you own the place. You discredit my authority and how things are run here. You know where the door is, if you have a problem so much, I am sure you can find your way out."

For a couple of seconds, Otis looked stunned as if he couldn’t believe he had just been reprimanded because of a human.

However, he recovered quickly, blinking rapidly, and with clenched teeth he said, "I meant no disrespect, Sire. I wholly apologize if it seemed that way. I simply meant you’re our Primus, such behavior..."

"One more word, Otis. One more word."

Jael’s eyes flashed and the temperature in the room dropped. Mauve felt her heart skip a beat and she could see a flash of fear pass across Otis’s face, it was quickly replaced with contempt and then his expression neutralized.

He bowed his head in defeat and returned to his meal. The silence that followed was deafening.

Mauve picked up her cutlery and tried to eat but every time she swallowed it felt like there was a lot of wood in her throat.

She tried her best to finish her meal but it took longer than she needed, it didn’t help that Otis would occasionally glance her way with a look that made the hair on the back of her neck stand.

She just had to have issues with vampires. As much as she appreciated Jael’s stance for her, she couldn’t help but think this would only widen the gap between her and the rest of the vampires.

At first, Otis didn’t register her presence on his radar but now she could see that he hated her. She didn’t wish that Jael had handled it another way, she wished it hadn’t happened.

Jael finished his meal before hers without looking at her the entirety of the meal, he had neither spoken nor paid any attention to her.

It was annoying and a bit heart-wrenching. He just spoke out for her. Why was he reacting in that manner? It wasn’t even a proper fight. She should be the one reacting this way.

He stood to his feet and her eyes followed him, she opened her mouth to speak but quickly closed it when she saw the way he turned away from her.

Mauve could only stare with her eyes partly open as she watched Jael walk out of the dining hall. Was she missing something?
