Chapter 327. On The Line
Chapter 327: 327. On The Line
"You better watch your mouth, son of a servant! Head guard or not, it doesn’t change the fact that you’d have to show respect to me."
"You’re only a Lord in genes, by status, not so much. It’s high time you stop bragging about it like it’s some achievement."
"Enough you two. You are not helping the current situation. I don’t know what the Primus would do considering the situation but I can only say to remain alert and for hell’s sake don’t let any letters from the humans get to him again."
"Yes, Danag. I would keep an eye out and check thoroughly," Erick replied.
"We wouldn’t be in this mess if you had done your job thoroughly before now," Damon commented.
"Maybe if you could read and write, you might have had a chance at this job."
"Who in their right mind wants your job? I am the freaking head guard," he turned Damon, "I mean no disrespect."
"It’s fine, just stop arguing."
"I am more worried about how the letter got to the table. The only set of letters I haven’t gone through were the ones that arrived between just before sunrise and just after sunset. I got them from you, Danag after sunset."
"Yes, I recall that but I simply gave them to you as I had collected them from the guards. You usually go through them so I didn’t see any need to check."
"What servant or guard did you get the letter from? We could ask him some questions," Damon suggested.
"I am not sure but I think it might be one of the guards in charge of collecting the monthly batch of blood, I was distracted and didn’t pay him much mind."
Damon and Erick frowned, "You remember people’s names, it’s unlikely that you don’t recall who gave you the letters," Damon said.
"I know what you lot are thinking but I wouldn’t dare and dealing with the new recruits would do that to you. I’d ask the guard in question to find out how the letter got into the mix but I doubt it would change anything and our findings would just piss off the Primus more."
"As you have been doing for a while now." Damon muttered.
"Damon, Head guard or not, you can’t speak to a former commander like that." Erick replied.
"I don’t really care for the semantics," Damon said, completely ignoring Erick. "However, I’d prefer to not have to hold this title much longer. Whatever your plan is, speed this up and get shit in order."
"It’s unlike you to speak to me in such a manner, Damon."
"Is it? I trust you and I know you wouldn’t dare do anything that would hurt the Primus. However, when he loses trust in you, it affects the rest of us. When you do shady things it makes us look bad. I know you think this might go the way you want but I doubt the consequences would be worth it."
"You are making assumptions, Damon," Danag said, taking a step forward.
"Am I?" Damon said and took a step back. "I am not trying to start a war, I am not against you either. I am just saying you better be sure this is the right way to go about it."
"I don’t know what you’re talking about, Damon." Danag replied with a piercing gaze.
"I apologize for running my mouth. They are absurd thoughts and you can be rest assured I would keep it to myself." Damon nodded and started walking away, leaving the two of them at the corner of the stairs.
"Is he right? Was that you?" Erick asked.
"No, I wouldn’t do something so deliberate and even if it was me, my intentions behind it are absolutely pure."
Erick sighed, "I don’t understand. I thought we were fine with this, I don’t even find the human annoying anymore. She is a nuisance, I agree but a bearable one."
"I thought you were adamant about the Primus not making a human his mate."
Erick laughed, "He is not going to make her his mate."
Danag turned his attention to Erick, "Are you sure about that?" He asked.
Erick laughter dried up and his lips sealed. The doubt in his eyes shined like a star in the dark sky.
"It’s just for a couple weeks, I doubt she will return. I want him to see what humans are really like and see that he was simply infatuated. Nothing has been right about this human. With her gone he should be able to focus on what is best for vampires and that would be getting a mate."
Erick sighed, "If the Primus finds out about this, you won’t get away with just a warning, Danag."
"Risks are necessary. We are getting closer and closer to what we once were. There is no better one to take us there than the Primus, I shan’t let him get distracted by a puny human."
Erick rubbed his hand over his face, "I hate this. No matter how you look at it, this would look like my fault. You better be sure of this."
"You won’t say a word?"
"I can’t believe you have to ask. As much as I wish I wasn’t a part of this, I would be the first person to admit that a human mate is completely out of the question. However, I absolutely dislike how you made me look like I don’t know how to do my job."
"I apologize for that, seeing you take the brunt of the Primus’ anger was a bit sad."
Erick sighed again, "You better be certain of this because you’re not the only one on the line this time, you’ve dragged the rest of us into it."
"When the time comes you can deny me all you want. I will happily take all the blame."
"You’re too zealous for your own good. I truly wish I didn’t know and I am sure Damon thinks the same because there is no way we would let you take all the blame. You better be sure of this, I’d rather lose a limb than return to my father."
