Chapter 323. To My Lovely Daughter, Mauve

Chapter 323: 323. To My Lovely Daughter, Mauve

Jael felt what could be easily described as dread as he saw her lift up a letter with a familiar seal on it.

"It’s a letter from my father," she said with glee. "I’d recognize this seal anywhere." She glanced back at him with a bright smile.

Jael’s mouth turned to a thin line. He was sure he had asked his guards to get rid of the letter, why was it still here and that was not the only horrifying information, Mauve found it.

"Are you sure?" He asked, intently thinking of how he could get it out of her hand.

"Yes," she said and turned away from him. She flipped the letter and gasped, "It’s addressed to me," her voice held surprise.

"What?" Jael couldn’t hide his shock. He sat upright immediately so he could get a closer look.

"Yes, see," she said, bringing it closer to him.

Written boldly on the front of the letter, behind the seal was the words, To My Lovely Daughter Mauve.

This was news to him. Was this what the guards were trying to warn him about? What was Evan thinking? Was this another plot of his to try to convince him to help out?

Jael’s head spun as he tried to figure it out but one thing was for sure, this wasn’t good. Somehow he knew he had to make sure she didn’t read the letter, it was a gut feeling.

She pulled the letter away from his view and looked at it again, "I can’t believe he wrote me a letter."

She looked unbelievable happy, this grated on Jael’s nerve. "To my lovely daughter Mauve," she chuckled at the end of her words.

"This is the first letter I am getting. I am sure it must be important. I thought I’ll never get one you know, my father is so busy."

She glanced at him as she spoke and Jael hated the sad look in her eyes. She turned away from him and returned her gaze to the letter.

That didn’t sound busy at all, it sounded like a father that didn’t care what happened to his daughter. He didn’t even care to send a physician when she was sick.

Why would he send a letter to her now? Especially when he just threatened the old human. If he wasn’t convinced before, he was now, this was something Mauve mustn’t read.

She lifted it as if she found it unbelievable that it was in her hands. She brought it down and made to undo the seal.

"Oh," she stopped suddenly and turned to look at him. "I didn’t even ask if I can read this. Can I read it?"

"No," Jael replied reflexively.

Mauve frowned, Jael thought her confused expression was adorable. "No? But it’s for me."

"Isn’t it odd that he is just sending you a letter after all this time?" Jael could only imagine how he sounded but he didn’t care, he was willing to say whatever would stop her from reading it.

"True," she said, turning to stare at the letter. "Well, he has been busy so..." She hurriedly added as she realized her mistake.

Jael wanted to tell her she didn’t have to make excuses for her father. However, it would give hint to the fact that he had done some digging about her. It wouldn’t look good in this situation.

"But it has to be very important, if he would send a letter now. There is no way I won’t read the contents," she continued.

She turned to look at him again, obviously waiting for his approval like she needed it. The letter was addressed to her, he didn’t have any right to stop her from reading it.

It was also hard to say no when she was staring up at him like that. Her wide eyes, expectant. He wanted to say no but he didn’t want to give off the idea that he was hiding something.

Jael ground his teeth as he prayed and hoped whatever was written in the letter didn’t have anything to do with him threatening Evan a few nights ago.

If she heard it from her father first, there was no way he would be able to explain that it was necessary.

Jael forced himself out of his thoughts, there was no need to overthink this. He had done what was necessary. Besides, since when did he care about what others thought?

Even as he said those lines in his head, he knew he was lying. He did care about what she thought about him, more than he had ever cared about anyone else.

"Yes, I suppose. You look like you’re about to rip the covering open."

"Thank you," she replied as she undid the seal.

Mauve didn’t know why she was happy that she had gotten a letter. That’s a lie, she knew exactly why she was happy, however, the reason wasn’t good enough.

It was a bit shameful that just one letter could write off the fact that her father had not reached out to her in over six months.

A/N: I know but when I go over the time in my head that’s really the amount of time that has passed.

However, the fact that she thought she would never get a letter and now there is one in her hand, made her more joyful than she wanted.

Maybe, he did care about her and was concerned about her wellbeing. With a hopeful heart she pulled out the piece of paper and opened it.

Mauve closed her eyes tightly before she started reading, her stomach felt tight, she swallowed and opened her eyes.

To my lovely daughter, Mauve.

I write you this letter to tell you just how I have missed you and I hope you are faring well. This is the longest you have been away from home and I pray for you everyday.

Sending you out to the Vampires Region was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do...

Mauve tried not to scoff as she read this line, it had not looked that hard from her point of view but she was willing to see where he was going with this.
