Chapter 316. Reports
Chapter 316: 316. Reports
Mauve hung onto Jael as they walked down the stairs. They had ended up spending more time in the garden than she had expected.
It has taken her a lot to not touch the flowers, a few of them had needed weeding and trimming. A bit if tendering too, she had left them unattended for a while.
She had tried to give a tour as best as she could but Jael was a terrible tourist and no matter how precise she tried to be, she could tell he wasn’t paying attention to the plants.
He had stared at her instead of the plants and she had to ask him severally if he was here to see the flowers.
"Would you go to your room?" He asked as he got to the library floor. The next set of stairs led to her room.
She nodded, she would probably stay in there for a couple hours and work on the garden before the second meal.
She wasn’t in any hurry and she didn’t want to move around at the time as Mill was busy. She was most likely in the kitchen with the servants.
She also wanted to get back to knitting, she was almost done and was proud of her work. The time Jael was away it was the only thing that kept her sane. She might be able to give it to him soon enough.
"What do you want to do there?" He asked, he sounded more concerned than curious.
"Nothing really, I’ll probably read a book or something."
"I see. Come and join me in my study, I have a lot of letters to respond to, I could use the company."
Mauve jerked her head up to look at him. "Are you sure you won’t be in the way?"
"I am sure I have this before," he said without looking down. "You’re the kind of distraction I look forward to."
Mauve blushed, "If you insist."
"I insist," he said, looking down at her, forcing her to look up at him.
Mauve smiled and looked away from him, they had gotten to the front of his room at this point and were quickly approaching the study.
"I don’t think Erick would appreciate my presence." She replied, still looking away from him.
"That’s his cup of tea. Besides, you should only care about my opinion."
As soon as the words left Jael’s mouth, the door to the study was thrown open and Erick walked out with a growl on his face.
"Sire," he said with a look of surprise. "You sure took your time."
"Another snarky comment and time wouldn’t be the only thing you’re worried about," Jael said, walking past him and through the open door.
"I apologize Sire but you said a couple of minutes, it’s been an hour," Erick announced, holding the door open for both of them to go in.
"Has it?" He asked nonchalantly. "Well then, I am glad I have someone like you to keep track of time for me. What would I do without you?" He asked sarcastically.
Mauve heard Erick swear as he closed the door a little too loudly. She glanced backward to see him walking toward them.
Jael led her to his seat and made her sit on his legs. "Don’t tell me you’ve done nothing since you got here," Jael said, staring at Erick with a dark gaze.
"Of course not," he said and stopped in front of the table. "I went through the letters. Most of them are generic questions." He paused and took a seat.
"I read a few that don’t need any reply, Lord Phelan and two other Lords have sent letters demanding why they had not received their batch of blood for the month."
Mauve felt Jael’s body stiffen and Erick cleared his throat while adjusting in his seat.
"However," he continued, "Since that has already been dealt with, there is no reason for you to even read the letters. I already tossed them out."
"I see, anything else that doesn’t concern that matter or anything leading to that." He asked.
"Yes, Lady Francine did send a letter asking about the drug even though she orally sent a message. Do you intend to reply to her?" He asked.
Jael frowned, "I don’t see any need to. Until I hear a confirmation from Kieran, keep anything on the drug on hold."
"As you wish, Sire."
"Anything else?" Jael asked.
"Yes actually," he said, pulled forward, sitting at the edge of the seat.
Jael frowned, "Is it important?"
"Not particularly, it’s a report from the south." Erick winced a little.
"Drusile?" Jael asked.
"Yes," Erick muttered enthusiastically.
"You don’t have to talk about your father like he is some..." Jael let the rest of his words trail. "What’s it about?"
Mauve blinked looking back and forth between Jael and Erick, a bit annoyed that the rest of the information never left their mouths.
She had never heard about Erick’s father before, she had suspected he was a Lord but since she had never heard hints of it, she hadn’t thought too much about it.
"There have been attacks on their food store. It is a bit excessive and they fear Palers, however, since the damage wasn’t seen until sun down it is very unlikely. However, the damage is a little overboard and seems to point to Palers."
Jael frowned, "Aside from Lord Garth and Levaton, Drusile is a major supplier of the food we consume. This is terrible."
"Yes, I figured."
"You sound unbothered. To be honest, yes. However, he asked if it would be possible to make some kind of investigation. This would delay his contribution to the Special Paler Elimination Training and he also asked for help."
"This is a terrible time to ask for help," Jael blurted out. "As much as the loss of the farm produce is a blow to us, asking for help at this point is a little overboard. Besides, going on an investigation is not advisable. If it’s Palers best to leave them alone and deal with how whatever it could possibly be got into his lands in the first place."
Erick was silent for a while then he said, "That wasn’t the only thing he asked."
"Sounds like funny business." Jael muttered.
"It might as well be because according to him, he would prefer if I headed this expedition as he is quite certain about my skills."
Jael slumped against his chair, "Ah I see, your father wants you home."
"No, he doesn’t. He most likely doesn’t like the fact that I have been away from home this long but to use such an excuse is ridiculous. He has never shown interest in my matter. Why now?"
"What do you want to do?" Jael asked.
"Absolutely nothing."
"Okay then, I will send a letter informing Drusile that I would send help he might need to rebuild whatever needs to be rebuilt but the investigation would not happen. Happy?"
"Thank you, Sire," Erick said and Mauve could see him be genuinely relieved.
"Whatever," Jael replied. "Put out the letters I need to reply, papers, and the pen so I can get to work."
Erick’s grateful expression immediately changed, "I am your personal guard, not your personal assistant."
"You’re the only one who thinks those mean two different things."
Mauve couldn’t help but chuckle at the horrified expression that appeared on Erick’s face. She was surprised when he didn’t glare at her.
"Get a secretary." He said stubbornly.
"I am sure your father can recommend someone," Jael said with a smirk. "The instant I approve the investigation."
"That won’t be necessary!" Erick said jumping to his feet. "I will get you your papers."
Jael didn’t say a word but Mauve could clearly see the smug look on his face.
Erick loudly dropped the items on the table. "Anything else?" He asked, his voice echoing in the cramped space.
"That would be all, Erick. You may leave, if I want your help I’ll call for you."
Erick smiled stiffly and headed for the door. Mauve watched him leave before turning her gaze to Jael. He had lifted the letter and was reading it.
Mauve could only pick out a few words, the light wasn’t so bright, and she wondered how he could even read anything.
"His father was asking for Erick and he was going to send his brother instead. The bastard didn’t mention this part," Jael muttered darkly.
"Is something wrong with Erick and his father?" She heard herself ask.
Jael jerked her head in his direction and she half expected him to ignore her questions.
"Erick has daddy issues. He doesn’t like how controlling his father is and prefers to do things out of his father’s control. This has gone smoothly for a while now but by the looks of things, his father isn’t standing by and letting him do as he likes anymore. He wants him home. Unfortunately, that’s a little tricky as Erick is directly under the Primus. So he is trying to use petty tricks to convince him."
