Chapter 310. Stuck With Me
Chapter 310: 310. Stuck With Me
"I don’t want to be a nuisance and I want to help you as much as I can but I don’t think you’ll ever let me do that. Besides, it’s not a problem, Mill handled it and I am fine."
Mauve let out a loud breath at the end of her words. She could tell from Jael’s expression that she had said too much. She shouldn’t have gone off on him simply because she felt some kind of way.
He stared at her wide-eyed for a couple of seconds and then ran his hands through his hair. Mauve heard a loud sound as he took a deep breath.
"Because of me you’ve come under danger several times already and the last time you could have died. What’s the point if I can’t protect you?"
"But I’m fine, you don’t have to worry so much."
"I have to. You’re weak, fragile and small. It’s my job to keep you safe."
Mauve winced at his words, she knew she was all this but he didn’t have to say it out loud. "I’m not that weak," she mumbled.
"But somehow I can’t even do that," he continued and stretched out his hand to touch her face. "Aside from being unable to protect you, I keep endangering you myself."
Mauve leaned into his cold hands, it felt weirdly warm. She wanted to move closer and wrap her body around him.
"I don’t want to see you in that state ever again. I don’t like the fact that you have scars you think you have to hide. I don’t like how hard it is for me to keep you safe."
"I don’t expect you to keep me safe. I am in the Vampire Regions, I knew the dangers before I ventured in here. Besides, you’ve done more than enough."
"It’s my job. I’m stronger, I should protect you. You shouldn’t have to worry about a single thing and rely on me."
"I know that," she said and scooted closer. "But I can help too. I know I am weak and all but let me carry some burden. It just feels one sided and makes me uneasy. I don’t know what to do when you won’t tell me anything. I wouldn’t have done that, if you had explained the situation to me and from the looks of it, you had been starving yourself and you still haven’t told me why."
Jael looked away from her and she could see the struggle on his face. "I get flashes of you bleeding in my arms and your scars are a constant reminder that I am the reason you ended up in that situation. If I had protected you properly you wouldn’t have ended up like that."
Mauve blinked at his words, she knew he blamed himself for what happened to her but she didn’t know just how deeply the blame ran. She thought they already addressed this.
Yes, it happened under his watch but if he had not done what he did to get her to Kieran she would have died. In essence, he saved her.
"I don’t hate my scars," she blurted out. "Yes, they are huge and go from shoulders to my elbows but I don’t hate them. You saved me. It’s not your fault I was attacked."
"It is," he interrupted. "And if it wasn’t for me, you wouldn’t have to hide your shoulders."
Mauve blinked, it was like talking to a child. He was firm in his beliefs.
"I don’t hide them because I hate them. I hide them because, I don’t know, it just seems like the thing to do. Besides, I am grateful for the scars, I wouldn’t be alive without them and it shows just how hard you fought to keep me alive."
"I barely did anything. All I did was bring your bleeding body to Kieran." He whispered.
"But you got me there fast enough for him to stop the bleeding and administer as much treatment as he could before the physician arrived."
"You were in so much pain, I don’t want you to go through any sort of pain anymore."
"Is that why you won’t drink from me or my blood tastes nasty now that I got injured?"
Jael glared at her, "Don’t you ever say that. Nothing tastes better." He whispered.
Mauve blushed and looked away, "Then don’t hold back. I am completely healed. All I have are the scars and they don’t even hurt any more. I can’t help but fear that you’re avoiding me because there’s some blemish."
"Blemish?" Jael asked in horror. "Don’t you dare say that."
"I won’t if you’d drink like you normally would." She replied, still looking away from him.
"I don’t want you to get hurt."
"I won’t, I am perfectly healed." She raised her head and grinned at him.
He smiled sadly at her, "I don’t want you to hate it here," he added.
"I don’t, I absolutely love it here."
"You won’t leave?" He asked.
"Where am I going? I don’t know if you understand the situation but you’re stuck with me," she giggled.
"I like the sound of that," he said and lifted her.
She squealed as he placed her across his legs. A bright blush across her face. Was this a confession? What does this mean?
"Me too," she said and rested her head on his chest.
"I am sorry I scolded you when you were trying to help but never do that again."
She pouted, "I wouldn’t have had to, if you fed properly and you never listen to me."
"That’s not true," he said, squeezing her tighter. "I always listen to you."
"Well, I want you to do more than listen. I want to hear you, I want to listen. I won’t know what’s wrong if you don’t tell me."
"You don’t have to worry about me. I can take care of myself."
"Jael," she cried.
"Fine, I will explain situations and make sure the last time doesn’t repeat itself."
She nodded and smiled at him while fiddling with the rope she tied, "That would make me very happy."
"What about you? Are you sure there isn’t something you need to tell me?"
She shook her head, looking up at him with bright eyes, "Nope."
A dark expression passed across his face but it quickly disappeared. "Not even about what happened on the rooftop."
She sighed and let go of the ropes. She didn’t want to be the cause of anything, vampires already hated her, she didn’t want to add to it.
"You don’t plan to let go of this?" She mumbled.
"No, not until you tell me what happened."
Mauve sighed loudly, she only told Mill the summary and not why she was really crying but Jael has already done this much for her, there was no way she couldn’t tell him.
"Corbin didn’t do anything, I promise. He asked some silly questions, saying he wanted to know more about humans."
"What kind of questions?" He asked, stubbornly.
Mauve sighed, "Like what we like to do and things like that. As I said, it was silly."
"Then what happened. How did you end up crying?"
"It’s a silly reason."
"It’s not silly."
Mauve raised her head and Jael was looking at her with a very serious expression. Seeing how invested he was in something she considered small made her very happy.
"I didn’t expect him to show up and it reminded me of that time with Seraphino..." She felt Jael stiffen as she mentioned the vampire name. "And for a second, I thought the same thing was going to happen and it was overwhelming that’s why I cried. I am sorry, I didn’t mean to make a big deal about this."
"Don’t apologize. He shouldn’t have approached you and he didn’t have any right to speak to you."
"I am sure he was just being friendly but I was scared for stupid reasons."
"Friendly?" Jael asked, staring at her like a horn was growing out of her head. "I am sure he could smell your fear, if you were scared."
Mauve went quiet, it was easier to try and justify Corbin actions than to address the fact that he was genuinely mean to her.
She remembered how terrified she was and how he didn’t seem to care. He had just kept coming closer and closer. She closed her eyes against the memory.
"I was very scared," she whispered.
Jael cussed and let her lean into his body holding tightly. "I will deal with the situation."
"No!" She yelled out. "This is fine, I wasn’t hurt and you’re back. I couldn’t be better."
"Are you sure?" He questioned.
She nodded vigorously. "I am."
"Then why haven’t you been eating? I noticed you lost some weight."
Mauve went silent. There wasn’t a particular reason why she wasn’t eating. It had to do with her mood than there being a problem. However she knew Jael wouldn’t believe such a flimsy answer.
