Chapter 309. Let Me See Yours
Chapter 309: 309. Let Me See Yours
Jael felt his blood ring in his ears and forced himself to calm down so he could listen to Mill. It was better to get the whole details before bursting out the door.
At least that’s what he told himself, his actions were saying otherwise as he moved from the corner of his desk and took a step in Mill’s direction.
"Nothing," she cried out. "Well, according to Mauve and I did question Corbin."
Jael’s shoulders fell and his face showed confusion, "But?" He asked, his gaze unwavering from Mill.
"She was crying when I returned, I only left her for three minutes. She wanted to see the garden and after I took her to the rooftop, I left her briefly to go bring a light. Corbin was standing in front of her when I returned but he didn’t look like he did anything but since then she has been a bit down and less expressive. She didn’t talk much about the incident and acted as though she had forgotten it. Also, you thanked me earlier but I couldn’t even do my job right, I don’t deserve your thanks. I am really sorry, I made sure she was safe after then and I never left her alone."
Jael blinked, unsure how to respond to Mill’s outburst but the clearest thought in his mind was that she didn’t tell him about this and Mill hadn’t mentioned it, It probably would have never reached his ears, just like everything else about her.
"Are you certain he didn’t harm her in any way?" He asked, briefly closing his eyes as he tried to get his emotions in check.
"I am, I checked her body for marks, and questioned her several times but I got nothing out of her."
"I see," Jael said as turned away. "And Corbin?"
"I dealt with the situation right away and told him never to so much as come close to her and if he ever broke the rules, he would be sent out of the house immediately. He didn’t believe me at first but I scared him enough that I know he won’t do anything funny at least not while I have my eyes on her and I haven’t left her alone since."
Danag walked around and picked up the fallen chair, he carefully raised it and stood behind Jael.
Jael dropped to the seat immediately and ran his hand through his hair. "Is there anything else?"
"There hasn’t been much difference in her behavior except being less enthusiastic as she usually would be and her appetite dropping."
"And you’re certain, Corbin didn’t do anything to her?"
Mill nodded, "I wouldn’t have let him off with just a warning. I am really sorry that I let this happen under my watch, Sire."
"Let me know if you find anything more. You may leave." Jael said, dismissing her.
"Thank you so much," Mill said with a very low bow. "I’ll let you know the second I do." She rushed for the door and closed it behind her.
"What would you like us to do, Sire?" Damon asked.
Jael slowly raised his gaze from his desk. Dealing with Lords was tricky and Mill seemed utterly convinced that Corbin didn’t do anything to her. Did he say something to her then?
It was easy to be rational since she wasn’t physically harmed and wasn’t in any direct danger, however, his mind was churning.
"Not yet," Jael responded as rose to his feet. He ran his hand through his hair.
"Sire," Danag called as he started to walk toward the door.
"What?" Jael asked darkly, turning around to glare at him.
"Nothing," the vampire responded.
Good, he was glad Danag took the hint. He knew what the vampire wanted to say but hearing it out loud would have pissed him off much more.
For now, he needed to clarify something and the only way to do that was to ask questions. Depending on the answers he got, he would make some changes.
********************
Mauve looked up at the ceiling as she sat upright on her bed. She should probably do more than stay in a room considering how overwhelming and depressing her thoughts have been these past couple of days.
She was fine, she assured herself. It wasn’t like he did anything other than speak to her, it was not enough reason to think that her life would take a drastic turn again.
Jael liked her enough and she was good. Except for the ones who spoke to her, the rest of the vampires didn’t care for her and there was absolutely nothing she could do about that.
Besides, they mostly treated her politely considering how they all thought humans were beneath them. This was a good life.
There was no need to expect more or expect better treatment, she was already getting more than she had expected. She should be able to bear this much, it wasn’t a big deal.
Her door flew open and Mauve jerked, a cold wind blew in and she could immediately tell that something wasn’t right.
Jael slipped in through the open door, the only reason she could tell it was him was because of his build, he was too far away from the light for her to see his face.
"Jael," she gasped out his name. "You’re back, I assumed you’d be held up for some time."
She pulled her legs to herself at the end of her words, feeling a bit cold she instinctively cuddled up to try and warm herself.
"Is that so?" He said and took a step forward.
"Yes," Mauve mumbled and cleared her throat. "What was it about?" She asked casually, not actually expecting a reply from him.
"The gates, Haney wants to purchase the iron to get them."
Mauve’s eyes widened, "Oh that’s good. I guess the construction of the fence is progressing smoothly."
"Indeed," he said and got to the side of the bed.
His hair was a mess even though she had tried to fix it up for him earlier. She noticed he was still rocking the knot she tied and she smiled to herself.
He sat down and she looked at his face, his expression was unreadable. It wasn’t like she could read it before, his eyes were the only thing she could ever figure out.
"Is there anything you need to tell me?" He asked gently.
Mauve shook her head and smiled at him. "No, why?"
"Mill came by the study," Jael said, dropping the words casually but to Mauve it was equivalent to an explosion.
"Ah, I see," she said and hugged her legs tighter. She assumed since Mill dealt with it, she wouldn’t inform Jael but that’s not the case she was hoping the vampire wouldn’t tell him.
For some reason, the only thing she has done since she got here was get into one trouble or the other. Her well-being was entirely in the hands of others.
"Why didn’t you tell me about what happened in the garden?" He asked darkly, his eyes flickering a little.
His eyes usually glowed when he was angry or aroused, sometimes it could be both but she could usually tell which one it was by the way she felt and right now she was anxious as hell.
"It wasn’t a big deal and nothing really happened. Besides, he just asked a couple of questions, it wasn’t like he attacked me."
She saw Jael wince before she turned her gaze away from him. She didn’t want to talk about her problems when he wouldn’t dare bring up his.
She was fine, there was no need to discuss this. Why was it so easy for him to bring this up but not that? Did he think she couldn’t handle her problems by herself? Besides, it wasn’t a problem, it was just an unfortunate situation and she overreacted, There was no need for anyone to go over the top about it. She wasn’t that fragile.
"That’s not what it seemed like. Mill mentioned you cried, you wouldn’t cry over questions."
"But that’s what happened, you don’t need to worry." She muttered.
"I want to, You’re under my care. Nothing is supposed to happen to you."
"And nothing happened," Mauve could feel her heart burning up. The room suddenly felt too hot.
"Mauve," Jael called sternly.
"I am sure Mill told you I wasn’t harmed."
"It doesn’t explain why you were crying."
"I was shocked and it drove me to tears."
"That doesn’t make any sense. Did he tell you anything? Why won’t you tell me? Why don’t you tell me anything?"
"What?" Mauve asked her head, jerking in his direction. "I could say the exact same thing about you! You don’t consider my opinion and you don’t want my help. You said you’d talk about what happened before you left but not once have you brought it up. Why would I tell you about my problems when you’ve never let me see yours? I don’t want to be a nuisance and I want to help you as much as I can but I don’t think you’ll ever let me do that."
