Chapter 302. The Cottage
Chapter 302: 302. The Cottage
"Find an inn fast, I can feel the heat."
"The sun is still hidden, Sire," Danag commented.
Jael glared at Danag, "Yes but it will be out in five minutes. I’d rather not have to deal with healing from sunburn."
"I apologize, Sire. It may have eluded my mind that you are more susceptible to the sun than the rest of us."
"Thank you for that unnecessary announcement, Danag. Now, find a bloody inn."
"We wouldn’t be in such a need if a certain someone had not made us run all night," Erick muttered.
"Well, thanks to a certain someone, we just cut our journey in half," Jael announced proudly.
"Yeah, because you made us follow an unused path because it’s faster, we are lucky we weren’t ambushed by Palers."
"Yada yada, you can get whatever rest you need when you find the inn. Get to work and stop talking."
"Yeah, yeah. We will find you an inn, Sire." Erick said walking forward behind Danag who had already gone ahead.
They were in a small village, it was the only settlement for miles out. Jael had been worried they might not find a place to shelter for the day. All they had was trees around and maybe a few stones, definitely not one big enough for a cave.
The village was pretty small and the houses too. A lot of them were already awake and from the look of the situation, they were starting to stir up a commotion.
None approached him, they just bunched up staring and whispering. A young boy pointed at him and as soon as he saw Jael looking in his direction, a look of horror appeared on the young lad’s face and he dropped his fingers.
Jael smiled at him, revealing his fangs and the boy hid behind his mother. He could smell their fear, every single one of them and he didn’t feel an inch of pity, which was good.
Only Mauve’s fear irritated him and made him weirdly uneasy. It was good to know he was fine, there was just something about the human.
They had gotten into the village pretty easily, there had been no resistance whatsoever. Not that it mattered, he was pretty sure they could tackle what came their way.
"Why are you here?" Jael asked, he had been so engrossed in looking around that he didn’t realize Damon was still beside him.
"I didn’t want to leave you alone, Sire."
"What? Why?"
Damon shrugged.
Jael squinted his eyes, "Go, shoo. Three of you looking for an inn is definitely faster than two."
"There is no need, Sire. I am sure they can handle it."
"I just gave you a direct order, do not make me repeat myself."
Damon bowed and as he was about to leave Erick appeared, "We found one," he announced loudly.
"Took you long enough," Jael said and ran his hand through his hair.
He followed behind Erick as they went past a couple of houses. No particular house stood out and Jael completely ignored them.
Suddenly, Erick stopped. "What’s happening?" Jael asked.
"What do you mean what’s happening? We are here, Sire."
"What? It’s a cottage! I am taller than the door frame."
The house in question was a cozy house with flowers at the front. There were two windows on each side with the door in the middle. Two structures were sticking out the opposite ends of the building and Jael assumed they were chimneys.
"This is the best we’re going to get here, Sire," Erick replied. "Danag is inside making negotiations."
"Whatever," he replied nonchalantly. Besides, he was sure he could survive a night here. How bad could it get? Also, the cottage looked comfortable.
"Please come in Sire," Danag said as soon as he opened the door.
Jael took a step forward as Erick made a path for him. He put a leg through the door and his head made a loud sound as it hit the door frame.
Erick let out a loud snicker, Jael turned to glare at him and he ceased his laughter, standing in an upright position and looking up to the sky.
"I apologize, Sire, I should have mentioned it," Danag said with a straight face.
"It’s fine," Jael said, and bending his head properly he stepped into the house.
He first saw an old woman standing in the corner with her head bent. She looked a little shaken and she kept her head bent. Jael frowned, he could sense that there was at least five other occupants in the house.
The room he entered was compact and he could immediately tell this was the living room. There was a rocking chair beside the fireplace and it was still rocking.
A table laid in the middle of the room and it was covered with a cloth that looked like it could use more than just washing.
"This way, Sire." Danag side drawing his attention to the other side of the room.
There was a path leading further into the house and it gave Jael a weird feeling. He walked down the path, passing doors on both sides.
The end of the path was a staircase leading down. Jael winced as he saw what was at the end and stopped walking.
"Where are we going, Danag?"
"Our room," Danag kept a straight face but Jael could see the sides of his lips falter.
"That’s a cellar. Also, why would a cottage even have one?"
"I didn’t think you knew the layouts of buildings, Sire."
"This is not the time, Danag. I am not going to sleep among foodstuffs and tools."
Erick snickered and Jael glared at him. He turned his head away and took several steps back.
"I am afraid, this is the only choice we have. As you can see sunlight is already coming through the windows and I asked her properly but she insisted that she didn’t have any rooms that could be completely shielded from sunlight."
"I am sure, something can be done, they could stuff all the holes with clothes for all I care. Use a wooden board. There are several options."
"You don’t have time, Sire."
Jael cussed the house echoing with his voice.
