Chapter 301. Thick Skull

Chapter 301: 301. Thick Skull

"Mauve," he whispered and took a step forward. Mauve took a step back even though the distance between them was at least fifteen feet. "Can I help you?" Her voice sounded weaker than she wanted.

"I just wanted to talk to you," he replied, taking two steps forward.

She had seen the way he looked at her at the table, there was no way he wanted to just talk. She didn’t know what he wanted and to be honest, she didn’t really care.

It was already stressing her that a vampire was talking to her let alone, one as creepy as Corbin. She could feel her heartbeat rising, her fear fueling its beats. It made her lightheaded and she held onto the bricks supporting her flowers. She was still tired, she didn’t have any energy to deal with this.

"About what?" Her voice sounded steady which made her glad.

He took a step forward and Mauve gripped the support even harder as she couldn’t move backward anymore.

"Well," he cleared his throat and took another step forward.

Mauve felt tears blur her vision, she was terrified and not just that, this was bringing bad memories, one she didn’t dare think about.

"I wanted to ask a few questions," he finished, oblivious to her fear. No, he wasn’t oblivious, he was ignoring it.

"I don’t think I am the right person to ask, I am sure someone else will be very willing to help you with what you might need." She said hurriedly, hoping to chase him away before he got any closer.

"No, they are questions only you can answer. About humans, obviously there is no better person to ask, it has to be you."

He was obviously lying, he didn’t look a bit curious about humans, she was certain his attitude toward her kind was even worse than Erick’s.

However, she was alone in here and he could get to her faster than anyone could walk through that door, she didn’t want to agitate him. Even as the fear clogged her throat, she forced herself to speak.

She blinked twice, "What would you like to know?"

"First off, what do you guys like to do?"

Mauve stared at him with horror on her face. How in God’s name was she supposed to answer a question like that? She was going to do her best, her life depended on it. He was already too close for comfort and she realized that he seemed to stop walking whenever she spoke.

"You know we are not that different from vampires. We do similar things, eat, sleep, have a family, live in houses, train for war and many other things." Mauve eyes darted to the door, Mill was still not back.

"I’d like to know the other things." At this point, he was directly in front of her.

Mauve chest lifted as it got harder to get air into her throat, it felt like there was a palm around her neck. Her knuckles were white from gripping the support a little too hard.

He took a step closer and stretched his hand as if to touch her. He could clearly see how much distress she was in, the tears in her eyes had completely blurred her vision and she knew all it would take was one push and she would be a sobbing mess.

He brought his hand to her and Mauve closed her eyes, feeling the tears roll down her eyes as a crushing fear engulfed her entire body. Her throat wasn’t even working, she knew she couldn’t let out a scream even if she wanted to.

"Corbin!" A loud scream tore through the night. "What the BLOODY HELL do you think you are doing?"

Mauve recognized the voice and relief weakened her. She felt a bit of wind and Mill was by her side in an instant, catching her just as she was about to fall.

She immediately started checking Mauve’s body for any marks but Mauve wrapped her arms around Mill’s neck, sobbing on her shoulder.

The vampire stood to her full height, letting Mauve hang on her neck her legs slightly off the ground. She wrapped one hand around Mauve’s waist, holding her to her body.

"What did you do to her?"

"Nothing, I was just talking." Corbin said nonchalantly.

"You don’t TALK to her. Are you out of your mind?"

"What are you talking about, Mill? Don’t make it seem like I committed a crime. I just came to see the garden, I heard it was on the rooftop and I bumped into her."

"Don’t put it so casually, you idiot. She is a sobbing mess." Mauve could feel Mill vibrate as she held onto her, she had never seen the vampire this angry.

"You don’t get to talk to me like that..."

"I don’t care about how you think I am supposed to talk to you."

Corbin glared at her, "As I said, I didn’t do anything. Maybe she pricked her finger on a flower on something. Humans are quite weak, aren’t they?"

"What?!"

Corbin shrugged.

"This garden is off limits! Never come even ten feet near her, don’t even look at her. Lord knows I’ll stab your eyes out, have fun growing another."

"You can’t threaten me because of a human, Mill." Corbin’s shoulders shook slightly as he chuckled to himself.

"This is the Primus’ human! Get that in your thick skull."

Corbin stepped forward, "I told you Mill, you don’t get to talk to me like that."

"Do it, I dare you!" She said, taking a step forward. "You will be out of this castle faster than you can blink. I won’t even mention the human, I will say you attacked me out of nowhere and I will have proof. I dare you to try it."

Corbin visibly shrank and took a step back. "There is no need to overreact, I didn’t even touch her." As he was speaking, he was retreating to the door and he was gone.

"Mauve," Mill called softly.

"Uhm," she replied, at least she had stopped crying.

"I am so sorry I let that happen. I was away for only a couple minutes, I didn’t think Corbin would make a direct move so soon. My bad, I gave him too much credit, I was careless."

"It isn’t your fault, you don’t have to apologize. I am glad you came on time." She hugged her tighter. "Right now, I just really want to lie down, my head hurts."

"That bastard! I will take you to your room.

"Thank you, Mill."
