The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 300. Without Jael
Chapter 300: 300. Without Jael
Mauve woke up feeling lightheaded. She tried to sit up but the room spun and she was forced to remain in a lying position.
She smacked her lips, her mouth tasted a little bitter. She frowned slightly and after giving it some time she tried to sit up again.
This time around the world didn’t feel like it was going to tumble. She sat up and leaned her back against the headboard.
She brought her hands to her lips and yawned, wondering just how long she had been out. The curtains were tied to the sides and she could clearly see the moon. She must have been asleep for at least three hours.
Certain that she wouldn’t fall face first, she gradually got out of bed. She jumped to the ground, a little wobbled at first but her feet held.
She stood on her feet and looked around for a couple of seconds, She was still in Jael’s room and she knew he already left.
She didn’t even get to tell him a proper goodbye but with what transpired this morning, there was no way it could have been a good-bye.
She made her way to the connecting door, wobbling as she approached. Two feet away from the door, it opened in her face.
"Mauve, please remain in bed," Mill cried as she laid eyes on Mauve. She rushed toward her and placed her hand on Mauve’s shoulders.
"What?" Mauve asked and lightly brushed her hand away. "I’m fine."
Mill shrank at her reaction and Mauve immediately felt bad. She knew Mill was acting on Jael’s orders and it wasn’t the maid’s fault but it was for the same reason she was pissed off.
"Sorry, I am just really hungry." She blurted out the first excuse that came to mind.
Mill composed herself but her expression didn’t brighten. "I know you would be. Your bath will be ready in two minutes, your meal should be ready by the time your bath is over." She took a step back, making a path for Mauve.
"Thank you," Mauve said, not knowing how to undo the damage she just did.
"You don’t have to thank me," Mill replied, closing the door behind her.
"I still..."
"I have to go get your bath water," Mill said, without letting her finish.
Her lips thinned and she sat on her bed. She deserved it, she shouldn’t have reacted like that but she was seething from what had happened before Jael left.
"Yeah, thanks," she mumbled weakly to Mill’s back as she watched her leave.
She knew her back on the bed and stared at the ceiling. She hoped they arrived safely. She couldn’t help but worry, it sounded very important. Leaving suddenly, she couldn’t think of what the issue could possibly be, she wished it was nothing bad.
Mill returned with her bath water and helped her get cleaned up. The vampire barely said a word, Mauve wasn’t complaining after all her mind was in shambles and she needed to organize her thoughts.
"Thank you," Mauve said, staring at herself in the mirror.
"You’re welcome. I will bring your meal right now, return to bed," Mill said.
Mauve nodded and slowly stood from the chair, Mill watched her very closely as if looking for something. Her neck had stung a bit during the bath and she noticed Mill took her time when washing around her neck. However, the vampire didn’t ask any questions and Mauve didn’t have any energy to offer any explanations.
She was hungry and felt a little lightheaded, she didn’t need anyone to tell her to lie down. Her meal arrived quickly and there was a jug of juice attached to her meal.
If she wasn’t sure Jael gave Mill specific orders, she was certain now. She said her thanks and Mill quickly excused herself.
Mauve then proceeded to spend the first part of the night in bed. Her day wasn’t usually exciting anyway so she didn’t really mind but it brought thoughts of being of use.
What would have happened if Jael grew tired of her? Her father’s wife was in charge of most things that concerned the castle.
However, there was absolutely nothing she was good at. How else would Jael rely on her? She couldn’t even ride a horse. Her only skill was gardening and reading that’s not going to be of any help.
Mauve jerked as a loud knock rang out. She sighed, she appreciated the distraction, her thoughts were getting too depressing.
"Come in," she called and Mill walked in.
"The second meal is ready," she announced with a subtle smile. "Would you like to have yours now?"
"Yes, please." Mauve and started to get out of bed. Mill looked less pissed with her which was a good thing.
"I can bring your meal to you, you don’t have to leave the room."
Mauve felt her face change and she had to remind herself that Mill didn’t mean any harm, she was just trying to help.
"I know but I really don’t mind."
The vampires nodded and Mauve heard herself sigh when there was no protest. She hurriedly got out of bed and Mill helped her adjust her hair.
"Thank you," she said and headed for the door with Mill following closely behind her back. Mauve frowned but thought nothing of it.
She walked down the stairs and Mill was right behind her. She got to the door of the hall and the guards bowed slightly. Mauve blinked, They usually ignored her but she saw Mill raise her hand and they immediately stood upright and threw open the doors.
Mill took a step forward and Mauve tried not to act surprised. She blinked at the bright lights.
Haney and Corbin were seated at the table.
"Took you long enough," Mauve heard a familiar voice and turned to see Mack seated at the table.
"I have duties, Mack!" Mack rolled his eyes and Mauve quickly took her usual seat.
Mill sat down next to her and the servant immediately began dishing out the food.
She elbowed Mill, "You were going to join me and you didn’t tell?" She whispered with glee.
"I didn’t want to ruin the surprise," Mill responded with a smug expression.
"I am definitely surprised," she grinned, giggling a little.
She whispered her thanks as the servant served her food. It was a little weird to see Jael’s chair empty. She missed him, it wasn’t something too hard to think about as she had already begun to miss him before he left.
Maybe, if she had not done what she did, they would have separated amicably and she wasn’t going to see him for five whole days.
She shook the thoughts away and dug into her meal. About to take a bite into her mouth, Mauve paused as she noticed Corbin’s stare. He had a slight smirk at the edge of his lips and his eyes twinkled.
She adjusted on her seat and quickly looked away. He made her comfortable staring at her like that.
"How did you like your food, Corbin?" Mill suddenly said.
"Huh? What?" He glanced away from Mauve, looking confused.
"Your food," Mill said darkly. "How do you like it?"
He smiled showing his gums, "Very nice, thank you and the hospitality has been just wonderful."
"Good," Mill said, stabbing her food unnecessarily.
Mauve smiled to herself, she knew Mill had done that for her, and she had to resist the urge to tell her thanks.
She ate a lot, feeling more hungry than usual. It was a relatively quiet second meal and she was glad when it ended without incident.
"Shall we?" Mill said to her at the end of the meal,
"Yes please," she replied and stood to her feet.
They both made their way out of the hall, The guards bowed again but Mauve ignored them, after all, they weren’t exactly bowing to her.
"Can I go to the roof and check the garden?" She asked when they got to the top of the stairs leading to her room. "I’d really like some air. It will definitely help my food digest."
Mauve watched the hesitant expression on Mill’s face but the vampire shrugged. "Sure, why not?"
"Thanks," Mauve said, running up the next set of stairs.
"Mauve, please!"
"Sorry," she said, slowing down immediately. "I got a little excited."
"I can see that," Mill said with a chuckle. "Just d-don’t injure yourself, okay?"
"I won’t."
They got to the door of the roof and Mill helped her open the door. "I will be right back, I’ll get you some lights. Don’t leave until I get back."
"I don’t really need the light, the night sky is enough."
"I’ll get you lights."
"Okay, I won’t leave."
Mill smiled at her, looked back at her, and left without going through the door.
Mauve walked through the open door and immediately rushed to her plants. Suddenly, she heard a sound.
"Mill, I thought you said you were going to get the..."
The rest of the words died on her tongue when she turned around and saw Corbin standing by the door.
