The Vampire King's Possession
Chapter 295. A Little Too Cold

Chapter 295: 295. A Little Too Cold

Jael ground his teeth as he made his way back to his room. He was in a crappy mood and having to travel all the way to the human kingdom didn’t sit right with him.

However, it was something he had to do as the situation needed to be dealt with immediately. He could only imagine how the Lords would react if news of this reached them.

Not once had he thought Evan would go this far. He never thought he would be that stupid. Did he forget who held the reins? Was this a bad joke?

He was more annoyed that he would have to leave Mauve alone in the castle. The idea of that just didn’t sit right with him.

She was safe, however, there would be vampires coming into the palace for the next couple of days, and he was concerned about that. There was also the fact that all his personal guards were coming with him, he couldn’t possibly take anyone else.

He didn’t want to take so many guards and he was certain they would be able to handle any number they faced.

He would make sure to put out certain orders and make sure she was carefully guarded. He didn’t want to restrict her movement and he also wanted to make sure she didn’t feel alone and intimidated.

************

Mauve sat on Jael’s bed with her knees pressed against her chest as she waited for him to return. She hoped it was nothing serious and as much as she was curious and concerned, the last thing she would do would be to bombard him with questions when he returned.

She heard the knob turn and her back straightened, instantly alert. He pushed the door open and Mauve squinted her eyes as she tried to see him.

He rushed toward her and from the expression on his face Mauve knew instantly something was wrong and it was serious.

"You should have gone back to sleep," he said as he got close enough.

"I have gotten enough sleep," she said softly.

"Hmmm," he replied and sat on the bed.

She dropped her knees and turned her torso toward him, she moved closer, leaning into him without touching him.

He sat with his back to her and didn’t say anything for the longest time. Unable to take it any longer, Mauve voiced out her thoughts.

"What happened?" She asked quietly, not wanting to piss him off further.

He turned his head to look at her face, he held her gaze for a few seconds while she looked at him with concern in her eyes, then he lifted his legs off the ground and laid down on the bed with one hand behind his head.

He stretched out his hand beckoning her and Mauve scooted even closer, he tugged her downward ever so gently and she fell on his chest.

"Don’t worry about it, it’s inconsequential and I’ll deal with it immediately."

"Okay," she said, hiding her disappointment. She had expected nothing less but it didn’t stop it from stinging.

"You should go back to sleep. You didn’t sleep on time last night."

She shrugged, "It’s fine. I got enough sleep." This wasn’t a lie but she had been worried and that had kept her up.

"You always say that."

"That’s not true, besides, I can always sleep later.

"Is that so?"

She nodded, biting the inside of her lips as she waited for him to say something.

"I will be leaving the castle at sunset."

"Why?" She asked with a worried voice. She could tell from the way he sounded that it wasn’t the usual patrol he occasionally made, he had never informed her about those and she usually found out through Mill.

She knew something had happened but she didn’t think he would have to leave because of it.

"I need to deal with a certain situation. It’s nothing to concern yourself about."

"Okay," she turned away from him. "How long would you be away? You sound like it’s not a day’s trip." She said coldly.

"A couple of days."

"What?" Mauve yelled, sitting upright. "How many days exactly?"

"Less than a week," he said dryly.

"That’s a long time," she whispered and rested back on the bed as she avoided touching him.

"I know but you’ll be fine, I’ll tell Mill to keep an eye on you and she’ll get you anything you need."

"Okay," Mauve said, hugging herself. That was not what she was worried about. He could have at least told her a proper goodbye, it just felt a little too cold.

"If there is anything you want me to put in place before leaving, let me know and I’ll give the orders to Mill."

"No, I’m fine." She said, still looking away from him.

"Are you angry?" He asked.

"No," she muttered.

"Would you prefer I don’t go?"

Mauve tightened her hand around herself, "Don’t make it sound like you’d stay if I say you should."

"You do have a point. However, I could..." Jael’s head turned to the door, distracted as the rest of his words faded.

Before Mauve could ask what was wrong, he got out of bed. Mauve sat upright immediately, looking straight at him.

"Should I be concerned?" She asked, blinking.

"There is no need for that," he said lightly touching her hair before pulling away. "Get some sleep."

She simply nodded to his words, he looked like he wanted to say something but decided against it as he turned around and walked away from her.

Mauve watched him go, hugging herself as she sat in the same position. He got to the door and glanced at her before he walked out of the room.

Mauve threw her back against the bed. She wondered if this situation had to do with Palers or the vampire Lords. He had looked like it was a serious matter, she hoped he’d be able to figure it out.

Mauve didn’t even bother going back to sleep, she was too anxious to and Jael wasn’t even trying to ease her worry. She closed her eyes as she lay on the bed, waiting for him to come back.
