Chapter 294: 294. Unexpected Development
A loud knock disrupted Jael’s sleep. He cussed as his eyes flew open. He had not gotten much sleep last night, obviously, that was his fault, however, he couldn’t think of anything so important, it couldn’t wait until sundown.
Jael didn’t respond, instead, he adjusted so Mauve was lying on his chest again, placed his head on his pillow, and closed his eyes intending to return to sleep. Hopefully, Danag would get the hint that he didn’t want to be disturbed. Danag didn’t.
Another knock soon rang out and this time it was loud enough to wake Mauve. Her head slowly lifted from his chest, her lashes lifting as she opened her eyes.
"Is someone at the door?" She asked with a yawn as she moved into a sitting position.
"Yeah," Jael replied nonchalantly.
"Oh, who?" She asked, pulling her hand from her eyes.
"Danag."
"Then it’s important." She replied, turning to look at him, fully awake at this point.
"The sun is still out, I am sure it can wait until sundown." He said and adjusted his head on the pillow closing his eyes.
"I think you should go see what this is about. Danag wouldn’t bother you unneccesarily."
"I’d rather not," he said and rolled to his side.
"Jael," she cried.
"Sire," Danag called out. "This is important."
"It better be," Jael grunted as he reluctantly got out of bed.
"I am sure it is," she said, hugging the sheets to herself. "Danag won’t pull you out of bed for no reason."
"You have so much faith in him," he said with irritation in his voice. "Return to sleep, I will be back shortly."
She nodded but didn’t make any attempt to return to a sleeping position, instead she remained seated with her knees up as she watched him leave.
Jael glanced back at her as he got to the door. He looked like he was about to say something but then decided against it as he turned his gaze away from her.
"What do you want?" He asked coldly as soon as he opened the door.
"It would be best if we discussed this in your study, Sire, away from prying ears."
Jael brows frowned, he anticipated this would be a usual waste of his time but he could see how agitated Danag looked. Something was definitely wrong.
"Lead the way," he responded."
"Right away, Sire." Danag replied, bowing as low as he could before scuffling in the direction of the study.
Jael brows furrowed some more as they got closer to the door of his study, he could tell Damon and Erick were behind the door. This was a cause for alarm.
He held his tongue and waited until he was inside the study and the door was closed. "What is going on here?" He asked with a thunderous voice. "This is quite the intervention, it is rare to see you both in the same room of your own accord."
"I have terrible news, Sire." Erick began.
"Well then, out with it." Jael as he sat on the nearest seat which happened to be the one across his usual seat.
"There is no blood for the month." Erick said.
"What?" Jael asked, arching his head slightly to the right.
"It is exactly as Erick has said," Danag chirped in.
"I heard him, I am just asking what the heck does that mean."
Jael felt a tic in his neck. First off, he was sleep deprived and most likely needed to feed since he was rationing on blood. He didn’t need any more problems.
He was hoping he was merely jumping into conclusion and what he thought they meant was not actually what they meant. Evan wouldn’t be that stupid.
"There is no batch of blood for this month. According to the guards who were in charge of transporting it..."
"I thought I put you in charge of that, Danag." Jael interrupted.
"You said, I should no longer concern myself with affairs outside of training the new recruits,"
"True," Jael said and pressed on his temples with his thumb and ring fingers. There was a bitter taste at the back of his throat. "Go on then."
"Yes, Sire," Danag replied, nodding. "According to them, the humans said they were ordered to not release the next batch of blood until they received orders to do so."
"Did they say why?" He asked, not that he told there could possibly be a good enough reason why.
They simultaneously shook their heads. "However, it might be safe to assume the letter had something to do with this," Damon responded.
Jael closed his eyes as he rested the back of his head on the top of the back of the chair. "I see, when did the guards arrive?" He asked.
"The guards returned by sunrise, however, you had already retired for the day and I figured nothing could be done until the sun had set again. I take full responsibility for not informing you immediately." Danag hurriedly said, he bowed his head at the ends of his words.
"It’s fine, no harm done." Jael said and jumped to his feet. "You lot get ready, we are setting off to Greenham as soon as it’s dark."
"You mean tonight?" Erick asked with surprise in his voice.
"Did I stutter?"
"No, Sire but we would need at least two nights to get to the palace," Erick replied.
"It’s not a journey we should make on a whim," Danag added.
"A whim?!" Jael’s eyes darkened. "Wouldn’t you say this is a matter of utmost importance that should be dealt with immediately?"
The room went deathly silent and Danag gave a feeble response, "Yes Sire."
Jael groaned and headed for the door. "There is still at least an hour before we leave, I’m sure you can get yourselves ready before then. If you have any more complaints, I don’t want to hear it."
"Yes sire," they said simultaneously.
"Good, send Mack and Mill to my room, and Herbert too. Also, this goes without saying but this shouldn’t leave this room and tell the guards to be quiet about it too. I’ll make sure to deal with this before it becomes an actual problem." The last part of his words was mumbled under his breath but was still loud enough for the others to hear him.
"Yes Sire," they responded but the sound of the door closing drowned out their replies.
