Chapter 293. Lord Phelan’s Outburst
Chapter 293: 293. Lord Phelan’s Outburst
Mauve stood behind Jael with her face hidden from view. Somehow she could tell they all knew what had transpired before both of them walked through the dining hall doors and the thought was embarrassing to deal with.
It didn’t help that they were also twenty minutes late. Someone has gotten distracted during the bath and even with Mill’s help, she couldn’t get ready on time.
"Sire," they called out in unison as they stood to their feet.
Jael walked straight to his seat with Mauce clinging to him. He waited until she was comfortably seated before he sat down.
Mauve waited until the rustling of seats quietened before she raised her head to look up. The servants were already serving out the dishes, moving fast.
As Mauve raised her head, her eyes met with Lord Phelan. His pale face was unusually swollen and for a second she was concerned that he might be sick.
However, upon intense studying, she realized, it was anger. His eyes blazed as they met her and she turned away immediately, her eyes meeting his son who sat next to him.
Mauve blinked, instantly taken aback. The son was staring at her with a strange expression as one would an exotic animal.
His eyes twinkled as he stared at her and even as their eyes met, he didn’t even bother to hide how much he was staring at her.
Mauve frowned and would have dwelled on it if the loud sound of Lord Phelan clearing his throat had not pulled her attention away.
"I didn’t realize the last meal would be served so late," he mumbled with disdain.
Jael cutlery movement froze for a millisecond but it started moving again and he brought the piece of steak to his lips.
"If you have a problem with it, you could have gone to your estate where you have the last meal on time. No one asked you to stay," Erick replied with a sneer.
"Are you speaking to me in such a manner? It’s bad enough that I have to share a table with a human and now this..."
Mauve felt cold as the room temperature dropped a couple of degrees. Lord Phelan immediately stopped talking and turned away from Erick to Jael.
"Lord Phelan," Jael said darkly. "Understand you are an unwanted guest, it would be in your best interest to behave." There was a click at the end of his words.
Danag, Erick, and Damon immediately stopped eating and they all glared at Lord Phelan.
"I apologize for my father’s behavior," the son said, immediately placing his palm on his father’s arm. "We left Phelan Estate in a hurry and strain of the travel and everything is getting to us, I apologize for his impatience."
"Corbin!" Lord Phelan called out in horror.
Mauve didn’t know who looked more surprised, Jael or Lord Phelan. Jael however, recovered quickly but Lord Phelan looked like he would need a couple more minutes.
Jael chuckled, "How the tables turned. I’ll forgive this rudeness as long as he remains quiet for the rest of the meal." He returned to eating without saying another word.
Mauve watched Lord Phelan stare a hole through this son but he completely avoided his father’s gaze, keeping his eyes on Mauve. She looked away, adjusting in her seat.
Corbin was an exact replica of his father, except he was on the slimmer and younger version. They both had wavy hair with the same round faces. While Corbin was sporting a hideous looking bowl cut his fathers hair was fuller and thicker too. They were both gingers.
The rest of the meal was rather quiet, aside the occasional stares from Corbin, the ginger boy. It was hard to read what he thought about her and since it was bothering her so much, she didn’t bother looking in his direction.
As soon as Jael was done eating, he turned to look at her. "Are you ready to leave?" He asked even though he could still see her eating. Was he angry?
She shook her head, "In a few minutes," she managed to mumble out with a full mouth.
"Take your time," he said and stretched his hand to touch her chin.
Mauve felt all the blood rush to her face and quickly bent her head down. Pulling away from his hand as she rapidly nodded.
It was unlike Jael, he was affectionate but he never went as far as to touch her during meals except he wanted to help her to her feet. Was he trying to get on Lord Phelan’s nerve?
Mauve ate quickly, the food feeling like bricks as they went down her throat. She didn’t need anyone to tell her Lord Phelan was glaring at her.
She wiped her mouth quickly only to see Jael stretching out his hand to help her to her feet. She swallowed and accepted it, refusing to look at the rest of the people sitting at the table.
Jael smirked at her and pulled her to her feet in a way that she would have no choice but to fall against him. He caught her and steadied her as if it was not originally his fault.
"Lord Phelan, enjoy your rest, the guards would be ready to escort you home by sunrise and Corbin..." Jael dragged his name unnecessarily and as he called him, he pulled Mauve even closer to his body.
"... I trust that you would be on your best behavior and be useful in our fight against the Palers."
Corbin nodded, rising to his feet. "I am ready to serve, Sire."
Jael frowned, "I appreciate the enthusiasm. Have a good rest."
He turned away, grabbing Mauve’s hand as he pulled her out of the dining hall. He pulled her away in a hurry and Mauve winced at the pressure on her hand.
They went up the stairs quickly, with him still pulling on her hand. Mauve skipped after him as she struggled not to trip as she tried to match his pace.
"Is something wrong?" She asked breathlessly but he didn’t answer her.
"Jael," she called but still, no response.
They got to the top of the stairs and soon came to a stop in front of his room. He pushed the door open and pulled them into his room, he closed the door and pressed her against the closed door. That was when Mauve realized his eyes were glowing and his fangs were engorged.
Compared to the person she saw in the dining hall, he was like a completely different person. It was obvious he was fighting to gain some control.
He growled as he moved closer to her and then placed his head on her shoulder, bending awkwardly for his head to reach her shoulders.
"Jael," she called softly. "Are you okay?"
He nodded and slowly stood to his full height, pulling her closer to him. He wrapped his hands around her, hugging her tightly.
"Yeah," his voice sounded normal.
"We should go to sleep," he said and lifted her off the floor.
"Jael, I can walk," she cried but he wasn’t listening.
Mauve knew he was trying to distract her but she did not know how to bring it up and she would be lying if she said she didn’t notice he was drinking less blood from her.
****************************
Lord Phelan glared at his son that sat next to him at the table. They were alone. "What was the meaning of that?" He asked darkly.
Corbin turned sideways with a confused expression. "What are you talking about father?"
"Why would you speak to me in such a manner before the Primus?" Lord Phelan glared at him.
Corbin’s expression relaxed and he turned away, "The Primus is already wary of me, the only way I can show that I can be trusted is if I go against you in that manner."
Lord Phelan immediately looked flabbergasted, "Since when have you been this smart?"
Corbin glared at his father, "What’s that supposed to mean?"
"Whatever, just don’t forget why you’re here and don’t hesitate to tell me the slightest things. Also, be careful around the human, even the Primus noticed the way you..." Lord Phelan let the rest of his words trail as he shook his head. "You won’t be that stupid. Just let me know whatever you find out."
Corbin dragged a long breath, "Yes father."
