Chapter 289. More Than An Apology
Chapter 289: 289. More Than An Apology
The second meal finished without any incident and Mauve quickly returned to her room, accompanied by Jael. He stood in front of the door but didn’t make any attempt to open it.
Mauve took note of his hesitation and stretched out her hand to open the door herself. The lock gave way as she bent the handle and she pushed the door open.
She tried to pull her hand from Jael’s grasp but he gently tugged her back. She frowned and stopped her movement to look up at him.
"Is something wrong?" She asked.
"You should come with me," he said and closed the door she just opened. Without giving her any more explanation he began to lead her away from her room and toward the direction of his study.
"Oh," she yelped as she rushed after him.
He stopped in front of the door to his study and pushed open the door. Mauve blinked as her eyes tried to adjust to the darkness. He walked in with her close behind him. He walked straight to the desk and as they approached it, Mauve could faintly pick up the smell of parchment paper and a little bit of blood.
He stopped by the desk and slipped in behind it. Sitting on the chair, he pulled her into his legs.
"Don’t you have work to do?" She asked, taking note of how small she looked on his legs.
"I do, that’s why you’re keeping me company."
"Wouldn’t I distract you?" She asked with a puzzled expression, looking up at him as she sat across his legs.
"Yes, but I assure you it’s the kind of distraction I want." He said and leaned forward, lifting her chin as he placed a loud kiss on her lips.
Nevertheless, he didn’t pull away after their lips met. Taking his time, he started on her lower lips then he proceeded to slowly get her to open her lips and he sucked on her tongue.
Mauve felt tingles all over her body, she wrapped her hand around his neck as he deepened the kiss. His hand moved from her chin downward. He rested his hand on her chest and squeezed lightly.
Suddenly, he started to pull on her dress, Mauve’s eyes flew open, and just as she was about to try and stop him a knock rang out. She broke the kiss and Jael swore.
"Someone is by the door," she said, turning her head toward the direction of the door.
"I know," Jael said with an annoyed tone. "Let them be, they would take the hint and go away."
"Jael," she cried.
Another knock rang out and a voice followed, "Sire, this is important. Mr. Haney is here, there have been a few changes to the construction of the fence and he would like to tell you about it."
Jael cussed again as he heard Danag’s voice and Mauve heard him let out an audible sigh.
"Should I leave?" She asked.
"Absolutely not, they would make this quick."
Mauve nodded and remained on his legs even though she would rather be out of here, she doubted she would be comfortable but if it was for a short while maybe she might be able to bear it.
"Come in, Danag," Jael said darkly.
The door slowly opened and Danag walked in first, Haney walked in after him and closed the door behind him. Mauve fidgeted on Jael’s legs as they approached.
"Sire," Danag bowed and then walked even closer. He stopped in front of the desk and his expression changed when it landed on Mauve.
"Mauve," he said softly. "I didn’t realize you were here."
"I just got here," she said, not knowing what else to say.
"Is that so?" Danag asked and raised his head to look at Jael.
"What is this about?" Jael asked indifferently.
Mauve didn’t need anyone to tell her that Danag was hinting that she excused them but Jael was obviously ignoring Danag’s hint.
Danag sighed and started to speak. "I wanted to inform you that the training grounds would be ready in time. They have made significant progress and it should be ready before the end of tomorrow."
"That’s good, anything else?"
Danag shook his head.
Jael turned to Haney who stood further away from the desk. "What’s this I hear about making changes, Haney? I thought we already concluded. I inspected the destruction of the remnant of the old fence and the foundation should have started already."
Haney took a step forward, "I know however, we have enough materials to expand the fence and after looking at the surrounding areas, I decided it would be a good idea to do that and I wanted to inform you about it."
Without missing a beat, Mauve jumped off Jael’s leg, "I just remember I am also meeting with Yasmin after this," she blurted out and was rushing away before he could hold her back.
She bent her knees slightly to no one in particular and then fled the room. She didn’t care that Jael would not be pleased about it but he couldn’t pay her to stay there, not with the way Haney was glaring at her.
She closed the door behind herself and rested her back on it to take a deep breath before rushing to her room. There wasn’t exactly anything to do there and by the looks of things she would most likely be stuck in her room until it was time for the last meal but even that seemed more bearable than being in there with them.
Danag had simply looked shocked to see her but Haney didn’t hide his displeasure. It wasn’t anything too bad but the fact that it was directed at her, made her quite uncomfortable and she just had to get out of the room.
Besides, she figured what they wanted to discuss wasn’t for her ears. It was embarrassing enough that she would have to sit on Jael’s legs throughout the conversation.
She walked to the drawer and pulled out the ball of yarn and needle. Sighing loudly she sat on the bed and got to work.
*************************
Mauve woke up to a knock on her door, she groaned loudly as she roused from sleep. She rubbed her eyes and sat upright. An open book fell from her chest to the bed, she picked it up and closed it.
She must have fallen asleep while reading it. She carefully placed it on the bed and another knock rang put and then Mill pushed open the door.
"Mauve," she called as she walked in. "Are you okay?" She asked, walking further into the room.
"Yeah," Mauve said and tried to get out of bed. "I just woke up," she said.
"I figured," Mill replied. "Your bath water is ready, I just wanted to confirm you’d like to have it before the last meal and not after.
"Yeah, before is fine. I usually go to Jael’s room immediately after the last meal."
"Okay, how did it go with Yasmin, did you make any progress?"
"Yes, I did. There is no need for her to help me out anymore. I think I have finally gotten the hang of it," Mauve said with a smile, suddenly she put her hand over her mouth as she yawned.
Mill frowned, "If you insist, anyways, I am glad you’re making progress."
"Thanks," Mauve returned.
"I will go get your water, let me know if need anything else."
"No," Mauve said with a smile. "I am fine."
"Okay," with that the vampire was gone. Mauve threw herself on the bed as she waited.
Suddenly, the connecting door flew open and Jael walked in. His hair looked like it had been hand ran a couple hundred times and she thought he looked paler than usual.
"You’re awake," he said as he approached the bed.
"To think you left me to take a nap," he said stopping directly in front of the bed.
"No," she said sitting up immediately. "I didn’t fall asleep on purpose."
"Is that so?"
She nodded looking down at his feet, "How did the meeting go?" She asked, raising her head.
"You would have known if you had stayed," he leaned forward and touched her face.
"I didn’t want to interrupt."
Jael sighed and sat on the bed beside her, "Even though I told you to stay."
Mauve turned her head, "I am sorry." She couldn’t tell if he was angry or not.
He lay on the bed with just his torso and placed his palms underneath his head. "An apology won’t be enough in this case," he said peeking at her with one eye. "I’ll need more than that."
"What do you want me to..." Mauve started to ask when the door was pushed open and Mill walked into the room with a servant behind her.
"Mauve, the water seems too hot but I brought some lukewarm water to mix it. It’s not that hot though but I don’t want to take any chances," she said as she placed the bucket in the corner of the room.
"That’s fine, thank you," Mauve said.
Mill simply nodded and walked towards the bed. Barely three feet away Mauve watched Mill stop abruptly and several emotions pass across her face as she saw Jael lying beside Mauve.
"Sire," she called out. Her voice shook slightly and she bowed her head. "I didn’t realize you were here."
"It wouldn’t be the first time, Mill." He said nonchalantly.
"I am really sorry," Mill said and slowly raised.
"Don’t worry about it, I will take care of Mauve’s bath and tell the servants to bring up more water."
"Jael," Mauve cried turning around to look at him. "You don’t have to do that Mill can take care of it for me."
"When would it be time for the last meal?" He asked Mill, ignoring Mauve.
"In about forty-five minutes," Mill said.
Jael smirked, "That should be enough time."
