Chapter 286. Revert To The Old Ways

Chapter 286: 286. Revert To The Old Ways

"I am saying if you give them such freedom, they tend to overextend and the next thing you know, we have a problem on our hands. A problem that would be very difficult to solve and would end up requiring extreme measures on our end. We can’t afford that, we already have bigger problems, Sire."

Mauve felt the food in her mouth go sour. Was Haney talking about returning to the time when vampires ruled humans with fear? Saying rule was a nice way to put it, it was more like a free-for-vampires banquet.

Or was he referring to the fact that she could freely roam the castle and wasn’t confined to her room or was it both? One thing she was certain about was that Haney didn’t like her relationship with Jael.

Jael pushed his cutlery forward and leaned back, he stared unblinkingly at Haney as he processed his words.

"I do get what you mean," Jael said with an expression that Mauve didn’t understand. "However, we haven’t had any problems so it is only safe to assume, we won’t. No need to worry about a problem if it doesn’t exist."

"Great words, Sire. However, I was merely expressing my concern. If there is one thing we know about humans is how ungracious they can be and if we have this type of relationship now, they might try to take advantage of it."

"I understand your concern, Haney but they know better if the rules are changed, we would be the one to profit more even though both sides would still incur some losses. This is easier on everyone."

"For as long as we have the upper hand, I think it is best we don’t show too much leniency as they might be too comfortable and we would have an issue on our hands."

Mauve felt herself grow colder, she forced herself to eat but she couldn’t taste the food and it was even harder to swallow. She followed their conversation with a twist in her stomach.

She knew a lot of vampires didn’t like the alliance and would prefer things were back to normal and vampires and humans were in conflict, where they could take as many humans as they wanted as their blood slaves.

However, this was the first time she had heard a vampire speak about it. She was certain they got more than enough blood every month. What else did Haney want from them?

"I will put your words into consideration and if there is ever a need to put up such measures then I will. For now, it’s best if things remain as they are, with the war against the palers coming up we need to make sure we have more than enough blood if we want to stand a chance against Palers. It would definitely cause unnecessary problems if we rattle humans suddenly. I like to think our current relationship favors us. However, if that suddenly seems like it wouldn’t be the case anymore I have no issues reverting to the old ways."

Mauve watched Haney’s expression soften at Jael’s last words. Was that what he wanted to hear?

Haney smiled, "Thank you for taking your time to answer an imprudent vampire like myself. One who wouldn’t stop voicing out his thoughts," he chuckled.

Mauve frowned, that wasn’t very funny especially if the reason why he was in a brighter mood meant some of them might be enslaved again.

"However, I am satisfied. I did want to confirm that the Primus won’t hold back should they step out of the bounds." Haney continued.

Jael frowned, his expression darkening. A sudden wind blew out a candle. "I don’t appreciate you testing me, Haney, Lord Garth’s right-hand man or not, I won’t be so lenient."

Mauve watched Haney’s expression brighten some more. He looked like he could barely contain his excitement. "I apologize," he said, bending his head. "Punish me, however, you see fit, My Liege."

Mauve wasn’t the only one taken aback, Jael also looked like he couldn’t comprehend what was going on. He blinked and picked up his cutlery again as he prepared to resume eating.

"I suppose I could let it go as long as this doesn’t happen again," Jael said and resumed eating.

The dining resumed to a brighter mood but Mauve couldn’t help feeling uneasy. Would things change? They wouldn’t remain like this forever and was there a chance they would return to a period of constant fear of attack.

She was enough to not have any personal experience but she had heard enough stories to know things were better this way. If there was ever a war between them, they would lose more.

The first meal soon ended and Jael rose to his feet. He glanced in her direction and stretched out his hand. Mauve took it without hesitation. He pulled her to her feet and carefully led her out the side of the chair.

"Sire," Haney suddenly called.

Jael frowned and slowly turned to look at the vampire with his hand holding onto Mauve midair. "Is something wrong, Haney?" Jael asked, not hiding his displeasure at the interruption.

"I would like your opinion about the foundation."

"I trust your work," Jael said dismissively. "I am sure you’ll do a good job."

"I know, Sire. However, it’s best if you see it."

"I see, I suppose I can drop by to check it."

Haney beamed, "Thank you, Sire."

Jael frowned and without another word, he strutted out of the hall with Mauve on his arm.

That didn’t sound very important but it seemed like Haney didn’t like her in Jael’s company. She could clearly see it.

"Are you sure you’re fine here?" He asked when they got to the door of her room.

She nodded, "Yes, Yasmin is supposed to give me some more lessons. I will wait for her here. If it doesn’t go well, we can always go to the rooftop." She replied.

"I will wait with you until she arrives," he said and walked into the room.

Mauve looked frantic immediately. "You have to go check the foundation, remember?"

Jael squinted his eyes, "Does Haney bother you?"

She looked away immediately. "I wouldn’t say he bothers me but he doesn’t look like he likes me very much."

"You don’t have to be concerned though, he won’t harm you. No one would dare. I already assured you of your safety even though there are more vampires around." He said, tugging her slightly toward him, his hand was still wrapped around her wrist and he used that to slowly pull her to him.

Mauve didn’t know how to tell him that wasn’t what she was concerned about. It didn’t feel very good to not be liked. Though she was used to it, it still stung.

"I know, I am fine." She smiled, she was now close enough, another step and she would be in his arms.

"You should go, you can’t keep him waiting and the faster they build the fence, the better for me." She added when he did nothing but stare down at her.

Jael frowned, "If I didn’t know better I’d say you’re picking the fence over me."

"Jael," she cried. "Don’t say that."

She didn’t want to interrupt anything, didn’t want to give anyone a reason to think she was a nuisance to get rid of.

"You worry too much. He can wait. Besides, he should still be in the dining hall. Come," he said and proceeded to pull her to her bed.

"It’s smaller than I remember." He said and sat on it, pulling her onto his legs.

"You were here this morning and yesterday too. That’s not enough time to forget the size."

"I see," he said and pulled her against his body.

"You’re so warm," he whispered directly into her ears.

"That’s because you’re ridiculously cold."

"Is that so?" He asked and licked her neck.

Mauve gasped, goosebumps popped out of her arms. Now that she thought about it, it has been a while since he fed on her blood.

He traced her neck with his tongue and she felt him grow bigger underneath her. Mauve blushed and Jael moved her hair to the side so he could get easy access to her neck.

Her heartbeat increased and Mauve felt familiar excitement gather around her abdomen.

Jael’s tongue was replaced with his fangs and they traced the side of her neck without breaking the skin. Mauve could hear her loud breathing echoing back at her.

Jael didn’t seem the least bit affected and if she wasn’t sitting on him, she would think he was still as composed as ever. She could neither hear his breathing nor feel his heartbeat against her back

Just when she thought he would feed on her a loud knock broke through the silence of the room and Mauve jerked.

"Princess," the voice called out. "Mill asked me to come to you, are you there? She said you needed more lessons."

"Yes, I am. You can come in."

"Are you sure about that?" Jael asked in her ear. "I am absolutely comfortable with an audience but I don’t think you are."
