The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 284. The Book
Chapter 284: 284. The Book
"I will be fine," she said and looked at him with a bright smile. "Besides, the more people around, the more lively it would be here, it’s so gloomy all the time."
Jael watched Mauve give him a bright smile even though it was painfully obvious she wouldn’t be alright.
"Are you certain?" He asked tucked the hair behind her ear.
"Yes!" She said sternly. "You don’t have to treat me in that manner."
"Well," he looked away from her, taking his hands from her face. "I will believe your words."
She nodded, "When would...?"
Jael frowned and looked back at her, the rest of her words had been inaudible. "When would... What?"
"J said when would they begin to arrive?"
"Oh, well in about two days. It depends, the training isn’t supposed to begin until the end of the week, basically in less than five days. However, some are likely to show you earlier than that. Are you worried?"
"No," she said and folded her arm. "I already said I will be fine."
"I know," he replied and closed the gap between them.
"Does this mean there would be more restrictions to my movement?" She asked.
Jael frowned and took a step back. "What do you mean more? There isn’t anywhere you aren’t allowed to go except outside."
A flash of something unreadable passed across her face. She looked away. "Well, the last time a large group of vampires came by, I was stuck in my room for the period they were around, I was just wondering if it’s the same situation."
"No," Jael replied sternly. "It’s not the same situation. You can go anywhere you want as long as you’re not alone." He added.
Mauve turned her head to look at him. She nodded at his words. As much as this wasn’t exactly much of an improvement, it was greedy to ask for more.
She knew just what the vampires thought of her. It would be stupid for her to move around carelessly. She winced slightly as she remembered the incident in her room.
She squeezed her eyes tightly, compared to the incident with the Paler that was less frightening. However, it didn’t mean she was in a hurry to experience it.
Suddenly she felt Jael’s hand on her shoulder as he pulled her close. "You’ll be safe, I promise."
"I know," she nodded. "I am not worried."
He looked down at her face and she could see the concern on it. She looked away but leaned all her weight on him.
"That’s good. Have you decided on what book you want to read?"
"No," she mumbled, feeling a bit tired. She probably wouldn’t be able to get any reading done but this was nice.
"Should I pick a book for you?" Jael offered.
Mauve’s eyes brightened and she pulled away from him, looking at him with a big smile on her face. "You’d pick a book for me?"
"Yes, it’s painfully watching you take so long to decide." He smirked.
Her smile fell immediately as she glared at him. "It would help if I had an idea of what the books are about. Just randomly picking one and hoping for the best is exactly a great motivation. Don’t make it sound like I am indecisive." She pouted.
"Well, don’t go making assumptions now." He said and took a step forward.
He walked past the shelf they stood in front of. Mauve followed closely behind him wondering what kind of book he would pick out for her.
She didn’t think he would do this. She had assumed she would have ended up deciding for herself but this was nice and she found that she couldn’t stop smiling as she followed him around.
After a couple of steps, he stopped in front of a shelf. Mauve frowned as she stared up at it. She has never picked a book from this shelf before now.
She stared at him with a puzzled expression and back at the shelf, wondering what kind of book he would give her.
He stepped closer and stretched his hand as high as it could go, and picked out a book from the top shelf. He glanced at the book one more time and then handed it to her.
Mauve frowned and stretched her hand to accept it. She eyed it oddly. The back was a wine-colored covering.
He carefully placed the book on her hand and Mauve’s hand fell. The book was heavier than it looked, he saw the look of shock on her face and laugh.
Mauve stared at the book, looking at the title, nothing about it was familiar. There was also no name of the author.
"What’s it about?" She asked.
"That’s for me to know and for you to find out."
She glared at him but didn’t complain. The fact that he had picked out a book for her was more than enough. She pulled the book to her chest and held it there.
"Whatever," she replied.
"Do you intend to read it here?" He asked.
She shook her head, "No, I will read it in my room."
"I see," he replied and didn’t add anything.
"We should go," she finally responded. "Thank you for helping me pick a book," she pushed the book slightly forward and rested it on her chest again.
He doesn’t respond and closes the gap between them, he bends and places a loud kiss on her lips before pulling away. Mauve’s eyes widened in horror and then a bright color appeared on her cheeks.
"I will take that as my thanks," he said.
"I already said thank you," Mauve cried out with a bright red face.
"Hmm, did you now?" He smirked and started walking in the direction they came from.
"I did."
He laughed out loud, "We should go," he said instead.
She scoffed and walked past him but he wasted no time in keeping up to her. They got to the doors of the library and just as he was about to open the door, she called out to him.
"Jael."
He paused and slowly turned around to look at her. "Is something wrong?"
"Can I ask for a favor?" She said and looked at her toes.
It should be safe to do this right, considering there were going to be a lot of vampires and it wasn’t like she would be alone. Besides, she just wanted to see.
He retraced his steps and stopped in front of her. "What is it?" He asked with a soft frown.
"Can I watch them as they work? I won’t go too close and it should be safe to stay outside since I won’t be the only one."
Jael didn’t say anything for the longest time and she was forced to look up at his face. His blue eyes were watching her closely and she looked down again.
She wasn’t sure if she pissed him off. Besides, he didn’t try to make this earlier, giving her orders and making sure she kept to them.
"Sure," he said and shrugged.
Mauve jerked her head up, "Seriously?"
"Yeah but only after they have made some progress. It’s a lot of work before they can actually begin on the fence. Clearing the grasses, getting rid of the old blocks. When they have at least laid the foundation, you can go see but not before then."
Mauve nodded her head as listened to Jael speak, she had not expected him to say yes so easily. Usually, he would drag it out by giving her some vague answer.
However, this was nice even though it might take a while, watching them work would definitely give her something to do.
"Thank you," she cried, refusing the urge to jump.
"You’re to be accompanied at all times." He said.
She nodded, "I will keep to the rules."
"Okay then," he replied and pushed open the doors.
They walked in silence as he led her to her room. He stopped in front of the door and watched her go in.
"You’re not coming?" she asked.
He shook his head, "I will give you some time to read. There is something that needs my attention. If you want anything, let Mill know."
Mauve nodded, hugging the book to herself. "Okay," she said, trying to hide her disappointment.
This was good, it wasn’t like she would be able to get any reading down with him there. However, now that he was not going to join her she didn’t have any reason to remain in her room.
"I will see you before the last meal," he said, still standing by the open door.
She nodded, taking her time to step into the room. There was no reason to be hesitant, she was literally going to see him a few hours from now.
"Okay, I will read the book."
He shrugged and slowly closed the door. Mauve stood by the door minutes after it has closed holding the book to her chest.
