Chapter 283: 283. Library Talk

"You asked me to wait," Mauve said, looking up at Jael with big brown eyes when he wouldn’t say anything in response to her words. It was weird that he was just staring at her, she didn’t know what to do with the attention.

"Yes," he replied softly. "What do you intend to do with the rest of your day?"

She shrugged and looked away, "I was thinking of going to the library, it has been a while since I read a new book."

She had picked up knitting again but learning all by herself wasn’t so easy and even though she could see progress, it was still a little boring. Besides, she wanted an excuse to walk around.

"I see," he softly said and touched her chin. "Well then, shall we?"

Mauve blinked and then nodded. He wanted to come with her? This wasn’t completely surprising but she knew he was busy.

She had barely seen him after the first meal and the workers had arrived, not to mention how Erick had sounded but somehow he was here wanting to follow her to the lines. Mauve didn’t know what to do with this.

Worst of all was how worthless she was starting to feel. She had no use, was of no help and somehow she tended to pull him out of his busy schedule. She could see why the vampires considered her a nuisance.

What are you thinking about?" He suddenly asked.

Mauve jerked her head up and blushed a little, "Nothing." She blurted out, looking away.

He sighed and took her hand, "Let’s go then."

She nodded and let him pull her to the door. She would be lying if she said she didn’t like the fact that he was going out of his way to spend time with her.

She still felt a bit awkward around him and sometimes it was hard to get a read on him especially if he was in a sour mood.

He opened the door and they slowly walked out of the room, Mauve looked over the bars, to the floor below her and she could see some servants walking around. "Sire," they all said, still their movements and bowing their heads as Jael walked out of his room.

Jael barely acknowledged them and just kept walking ahead. They got to the stairs leading to the next floor and Jael went up it without hesitation.

He glanced back at her as he went up the stairs, smirked, and then looked away. Mauve felt blood rush to her, she knew exactly what he was thinking. He turned again as they got halfway, smirked, and looked away again.

"Your palm is firmly around my palm, there is no way I am going to trip."

"Hmm, there’s that scar on your head, remember? With how clumsy you are, we can’t take any chances."

"I am not clumsy, I just made a mistake, it could have happened to anyone."

"I know," he said, his tone turning serious as they got to the top of the stairs. "But I would prefer it if it didn’t happen again."

She was standing directly in front of him. He raised his hand to touch the graze, his cold fingers tracing the already healed wound.

"It won’t," she said and bent her head so he was forced to take his hand away. "I will be careful."

"Good," he smiled and shuffled her hair.

She yelped and grabbed it, "Would you not do that?"

"Let’s go to the library," he said and pulled her toward the huge doors.

Why did he keep treating her like a kid? She didn’t entirely hate it but it made her wonder if he would ever take her seriously.

She stopped in front of the doors and a thought popped into her head. The first time they had been in front of these doors together.

She blushed and glanced at him, his gaze was on the door, away from her face. Mauve was glad because she was certain if he saw her expression, he would know exactly what she was thinking about.

He pushed the door open and she winced at the cold air that greeted her. The library was lit enough for her to see. The curtains had also been drawn, she could see that the window was open. She wondered if Mill had been the one to do this as she had mentioned to Mill earlier that she might go to the library.

She took a step through the open doors and the familiar smell of old books hit her. There was a nostalgic feeling to this, she wondered if it was because she had spent a notable amount of time behind these doors.

"Do you have any book in mind?" He asked as he followed behind her.

She shook her head as she looked up at the huge shelf. It raised to the ceiling and that was just one of many. To think all of them were filled with books. One thing was certain, she would never run out of books to read.

"Not particularly. Besides, if I knew what I was looking for it would mean I’ve read it before now," she replied with a sarcastic tone to her voice.

The library wasn’t very organized and there was the mix of the language she didn’t understand. She wondered if she could ask Jael about it now. She shook her head, he had more important things to worry about.

"True, you do have a point." He replied with arguing. His hand was still around hers.

"Do you have any recommendations, perhaps? I’d like to read what you’ve read," she replied.

He glanced down at her bright face and looked at the shelf. "I don’t think we have similar tastes. Besides, I haven’t read enough to recommend anything to anyone."

"Not even one book," she asked in horror.

"I’m not a fan."

"Okay," she replied, feeling dissatisfied with her response. It was almost as if he didn’t want her to read anything he may have read.

"What do you think of Haney?" He suddenly asked.

Mauve blinked at the question and she raised her head to look at him. He was looking down at her with bright eyes, she could tell he was watching her closely.

She looked away immediately, "Why?"

"I do want to know, must there be a reason."

She shook her head, "I guess not. He looks a bit scary but other than that, he seems alright." She forced a smile and looked back at him.

"Would you be alright?" He asked.

"What do you mean? Of course, I will." She chuckled. "Besides, he is here to oversee the building of the fence, I am quite grateful."

"I am not just talking about Haney." Jael sighed and ran his fingers through his hair.

Mauve frowned and turned her entire body to face Jael. "Is something wrong?" She asked, concerned.

"No, nothing is but I’m sure you’ve heard a couple of things."

Mauve bit the inside of her lips, should she be concerned? Jael looked uneasy. Did it have something to do with her stay here? She brought her hand to her chest as she waited.

"I have but I don’t know exactly what you’re talking about."

"The Special Unit," he sighed. "The ones we would train to fight palers."

She nodded vigorously, she had heard tiny details about it but nothing specific."

"A little," she replied.

"Well, the castle would be the base to do their training."

Mauve nodded, she already knew this. However, she could tell that it wasn’t all Jael wanted to tell her. He looked like he was not done.

"More vampires would have to stay in the castle and by the looks of the things I don’t know how long but it would be for an extended period."

Mauve kept nodding as he spoke.

"Would you be fine with this?" He asked.

Her eyes widened slightly, was he worried about her? She didn’t expect that he would want her opinion. It was his castle, he was allowed to bring in whoever he wanted. She turned away, her cheeks were burning up.

"Mauve, you won’t have to run into all of them but if there are Lords among them, they would join us for meals and would most likely stay in rooms close enough for you to bump into them. The rest of them would be in the servant quarters and would eat meals there. Also, the training would be done outside, so you don’t have to worry about..."

"I will be fine," she said and looked at him with a bright smile. Besides, the more people around, the lively it would be here, it’s so gloomy all the time."

Mauve didn’t know if it was truly fine. She still had a hard time with the vampires currently in the castle. However, Jael was doing the unnecessary task of asking her, there was no way she could say otherwise. Not when he was doing something so unnecessary by asking her. She’d manage.
