The Vampire King's Possession
Chapter 282. An Order

Chapter 282: 282. An Order

"I know you wouldn’t joke about something like that. That’s why I am hoping I misheard. What do you mean threatening?" Jael asked as he pushed open the study.

It was dark except for the candlelight that lay on the desk. There were papers scattered over the desk and from the looks of things the desk was currently in use.

"He didn’t say anything specific but he hinted about not keeping his end of his bargain if you won’t come to their aid."

Jael snickered, "He is bluffing. Does he actually think he has the upper hand? Ugh, this is a waste of my time. Toss out any other letters you might."

Jael stopped in the middle of the study and turned toward the door. "Making demands," he chuckled. "Just what does he take me for? This better be some kind of joke."

"This is because you show leniency towards them. They think we have weakened. A mere human king makes demands from the Primus, along with threats, this shouldn’t be easily forgiven, Sire. Acts like this would only continue if you don’t nip it in the bud!"

Jael slowly turned around to see Erick standing beside the desk, the vampire was fuming. Jael had almost forgotten that humans weren’t Erick’s favorite people.

Well, they weren’t his either but what he felt was indifference while Erick’s was closer to dislike.

Jael sighed, "Such shouldn’t get you all worked up, the human King should know better than to play his hand too strong. He wouldn’t be stupid enough to endanger his people."

"I think we have figured out they aren’t very smart," Erick replied.

"We’ve had our reign of terror. Enough about this topic, I don’t want to know more about this any longer no matter how many letters you might receive."

Jael continued walking, he had more things to be worried about than them playing at war. This was ridiculous, the castle was about to be crowded and he would most likely be more preoccupied than ever, he didn’t have time to deal with issues like this.

He would also want to start picking off the palers before the squad officially starts. He doubted he would be able to sit still waiting for them to be ready. Ugh, his responsibilities were draining.

There was also Mauve, he was concerned that the less time he spent with her, the more they were likely to drift apart.

"Sire," Erick suddenly called out. "Let me teach them a lesson."

"What? Let it go, Erick." As much as he wanted to punch Evan Grey in the face, he had no intention of giving him any satisfaction by acknowledging his petty demands.

"Yes, Sire. Another thing?"

Jael groaned, ’What is it?"

"I’d like you to give someone the task of going through the letters we receive. I am not some secretary. Damon gets to be the new head guard and I am stuck with letter duty."

Jael winced, he saw this coming. Jael waved his hand, "As you wish, Erick. Just find someone reliable. We are done here."

"Yes, Sire."

He pulled open the door and walked out of the room. He quickly made his way to his room. He could tell she was still in there.

He pushed open the door and she sat upright.

"You’re back, that was fast. I was expecting it to take longer."

"Erick is the kind to make a fuss over small matters. It wasn’t as serious as he painted it to be."

She smiled up at him, "I am glad."

Jael closed the gap between them, stopping directly in front of her. He looked down at her face and noticed there was a bit of color on her cheeks. He smirked at how easy it was to get her all flustered.

"You asked me to wait," she said when he wouldn’t say anything.

"Yes," he replied softly. "What do you intend to do with the rest of your day?" He asked.

She shrugged, "I was thinking of going to the library, it has been a while since I read a new book."

"I see," he softly said and touched her chin. "Well, then shall we?"

Mauve blinked and then nodded.

Haney watched the human leave with the Primus with an unreadable expression on his face. He turned to see Danag looking at him but the vampire didn’t say a word.

He wiped the napkin across his lips as he finished the last of his food. Only the new head guard, Damon, and Danag remained. He wasn’t familiar with Damon and the vampire didn’t seem to talk much.

"I suppose it doesn’t hurt to get started on the plans you have for the training."

Danag shrugged, "Same old, same old. Nothing drastic. As much as I would probably want to start with something difficult it would be best to go with the basics. However, I am quite open to any ideas you might have."

"That seems good enough," Haney said and his gaze lowered. "What’s the deal with the human?" He asked bluntly.

Danag jerked his head up, "Never been one to hold back Mr. Haney." Danag replied.

"You didn’t answer my question, Danag."

"I’d rather not divulge personal matters of the Primus."

"I am not saying you should tell me anything that isn’t known, Besides, it would be rude to ask the Primus directly."

"Same reason you shouldn’t be asking other people," Damon said darkly.

"Oh, he speaks," Haney said with a smirk. "I was worried the Primus was slacking off and had chosen someone who could even defend him in his absence. You don’t look like you have an experience in battle, you have no right to be the Head Guard."

"Mr. Haney!" Danag cried out but was immediately ignored.

"Would you like me to show you my skills?" Damon asked with a jeer. "Bantering has never been my strong suit but if you’d like to see what these hands can do, I’d be more than happy to show you."

Damon sat up right as he glared at the Vampire who sat across from him. His grey eyes stood out, his pupils unmoving.

"You don’t pass but I guess I am willing to let it go for now. I am sure the Primus had reasons for his decision but it doesn’t mean I agree."

"Don’t make it sound like you have a say," Damon spat out.

"Hmph," Mr. Haney said and stood to his feet. "I guess that’s the end of this. It was a wonderful meal, give my regards to the chef."

He dropped the napkin on the table and slowly made his way to the exit. The door closed behind him and Danag let out a loud sigh.

"Don’t let that get to you. Mr. Haney has always been like that, it’s his way of sizing people up. He tends to poke at them."

"How do you know him?" Damon asked.

Danag scratched his head, "I tried under him."

"Seriously?" Damon said and looked to the door and back at Danag.

"Don’t mind how he looks, he is at least a century old than I was, and not only that he was the former Head Guard before me."

"What? I have been in the castle for at least half a century. Why isn’t this common knowledge? I thought Roman was the head guard before you."

"Because he wasn’t a Head Guard for very long. The former Primus appointed him for his skills but he trained me and resigned as being in the castle meant he was away from the Garth castle. However, I was too young to take the Post of the Head Guard and Roman was appointed."

"He died with the former Primus and his mate," Damon finished.

Danag nodded, "Yeah, that’s why he can take a jab at you. Don’t take it to heart, he really doesn’t mean any harm. He is merely sizing you up."

"What about you?" Damon asked suddenly.

Danag frowned, "What do you mean?"

"Surely, you must dislike this. Yet you’re not saying a word about it."

"Do you want me to?"

"I don’t know," Damon said and looked away. "I just don’t like being given extra responsibilities."

"Why didn’t you say no?"

Damon squinted his eyes, "Are you really asking me that? It’s either I or Erick and we both know that’s a bad idea."

Danag laughed, "I certainly see what you mean. As much as he would do a good job the baggage would be unnecessary."

"Whatever is going on between you and the Primus, sort it out. I can only handle this position for much longer. Besides, nobody truly sees me as the Head Guard."

"You’ll get used to it."

"I don’t want to. Besides, all I know how to do is fight. I don’t know anything else, and being the Head Guard means so many other things. So, figured this out fast. That’s an order from your commander." Damon stood to his feet and walked to the door without a second glance.

Danag remained seated, placing his hands on the table. He sat for a couple of minutes before he stood to his feet and walked out the door.
