Chapter 271. Arrival At The Lord’s
Chapter 271: 271. Arrival At The Lord’s
Jael frowned as the door to Lord Garth’s mansion was thrown open. He had gotten here faster than he expected but that was mostly because they didn’t run into any paler on their way here.
He didn’t know why he was disappointed by this but at least this meant the meeting could start on time and he would be out of here soon.
The door opened to reveal Lord Garth at the entrance. He stood with his arm spread apart. His blond hair was brushed away from his face.
"Father," Sabrina screamed as she saw her father and rushed into his arms.
"Daughter," Lord Garth replied with glee. "Welcome home. I am so glad you got here without a scratch. Thank you, Sire," he turned to Jael. "And welcome to my humble abode."
"Primus," Jael heard two voices say and realized he didn’t register their presence at all.
Lord Garth’s mate, Lady Arora, and their youngest daughter stood behind Lord Garth. Jael couldn’t remember her name but he recognized her immediately.
Besides, one look was all he needed, she was the younger version of Lady Sabrina with shorter hair. The difference between their age was noticeable. Jael was aware of Sabrina being at least half a century older than her younger sister.
"Lady Arora," he responded, ignoring the youngest lady. It was troublesome and considering he didn’t remember her name, this was a better approach.
"Sire, thank you for gracing our home with your presence."
"You don’t have to be so formal lady Arora, the pleasure is all mine."
She smiled sweetly at him, "My mate informed me that Sabrina would return with you, I hope she didn’t cause you much trouble, she can be quite a handful."
"Mother," Sabrina cried out, pulling away from her father, she glanced at her mother with a horrified expression on her face.
"I merely speak the truth," Lady Arora responded.
"That’s far from it, Mother," she protested.
"Enough bickering," Lord Garth suddenly said but there was malice in his words. "We can’t keep the Primus waiting, he needs to rest. I am sure the journey here must have been strenuous."
"It is fine Lord Garth and Lady Arora, I had no problems with Lady Sabrina in the castle, she was an impeccable guest," Jael said with a smile that didn’t reach his eyes.
Lady Arora pecked up immediately, her face lighting up. Jael held his smile, the pleasantries were already tiring and to be honest, he would rather get on with the meeting.
"I will lead you to your room, Sire." Lord Garth and headed further into the mansion.
"There is no need for that Lord Garth," Jael immediately spoke out. "I will return today. As soon as the meeting is over, I shall return to the castle."
Lord Garth turned to look at Jael and he could see the disappointment in the Lord’s eyes, he didn’t even try to hide it.
"Oh my," Lady Arora held her hand to her chest. "We would love for you to spend the day here. You can rest up for the stressful night and leave tomorrow night," Lady Arora cajoled.
"You would have to forgive me, Lady Arora. Unfortunately, I have important matters I must attend to and I cannot put it off."
"I understand, Sire." She replied with a shrunken expression.
"Still, the room has been prepared for you. I’d like you to please use it for as long as you’d be here and I hope during the night, you’d change your mind. You are more than welcome to stay as long as you like, it will be an honor to have you in our home."
"I have already asked so much of you, Lord Garth, but of course, I will let you know if I decide to spend the day here. Have Loed Kieran arrived, he informed me he would be here before daylight?" Jael asked, changing the subject.
His mind was made up and there was no convincing him to spend more time than necessary here.
He could clearly see the disappointment in Lord Garth’s eyes and he was certain the wheels in Lord Garth’s head were spinning to find a reason to keep him here for longer.
"Yes, he did arrive just before dawn. I will inform a guard to let him know about your presence."
"Alright," Jael replied.
"Right this way, please." Lord Garth immediately started walking.
"If there is anything you’d like, please let us know, Sire." Lady Arora said, standing aback as she gave Jael room to move forward.
"I am sure everything would be to my liking," he said with a smirk and watched Lady Arora break into a bright smile. "Now, if you’ll excuse me, ladies."
Jael followed behind Lord Garth without saying a word. The last time he was here, his parents were still alive but by the looks of things not a lot has changed.
Lord Garth stopped in front of a door and pushed it open. The first thing Jael noticed was how sweetly the room smelled and it was bright, too bright.
Also, all the sheets, curtains, and any type of covering were of one shade of red or the other. Even the carpets and rugs. Jael was just glad it was mostly the dark shades. He doubted he would be able to stay in a bright room.
The monochrome was already eating at his eyes, if the colors were brighter, he was certain he would claw his eyes out.
There were lamps in every section and they were all lit. Jael winced at the brightness. He knew as soon as the doors were closed he was going to put out more than half of the lights.
"This is your room," Lord Garth proudly announced.
"What a pretty room," Jael said and he could swear he heard Erick snicker.
"I am glad it is to your liking."
Jael was tempted to say it was not but he held his tongue instead he walked past Lord Garth into the room.
"I will ask a servant to bring forth your bath water immediately and the first meal has been over for over two hours. However, I have prepared for the Sire’s arrival and your meal would be ready in thirty minutes."
Lord Garth stared at Jael with a quizzing look as if expecting confirmation of the information.
"That’s perfect, Lord Garth. If you’d excuse me, I’d like to freshen up." Jael was already sick of seeing his face and having the Lord study him so much
"Of course, Sire. I will come to get you when it’s time for the first meal. Is there anything, in particular, you’d like?"
"No," Jael smiled stiffly, hoping Lord Garth would take a hint.
"Well then I shall be on my way and a servant will be here shortly with the bathwater."
"Tell Kieran I want to see him now."
"As you wish, Sire. I shall do that." Lord Garth said with a bow.
"Thank you, Lord Garth," Jael said and hoped the smile on his face seemed genuine.
Lord Garth immediately looked flustered, "It is my duty to serve, Sire. Please, save your thanks."
The door had barely closed shut when Erick burst out laughing. "What the heck is this? A bridal room?" He held his stomach as he laughed. "Did you tell Lord Garth your favorite color was red? I don’t think I have ever seen this much red in my life. It burns my eyes."
"That’s enough from you," Damon said.
Erick stopped laughing and glared at Damon "Don’t act like you don’t think the same." Erick scowled at him. " Just what were they thinking?" He asked and spun around
"Put out the lights except the ones by the dresser, it burns my eyes."
Erick laughed some more, "Even you hate it."
Damon moved quickly, putting out the light as Jael requested. It didn’t take up to a minute.
"Leave, all of you, and find out what you can. Having all of you in this tiny space is enough to make me nauseated. Also, you don’t have to follow me around, aside from Damon the rest of you are to do as you please."
"Yes, Sire." They said simultaneously and bowed.
"Now get out."
They nodded and left without making a sound, not even the sound of the door closing.
Jael carefully took off his jacket and placed it on the bed. He didn’t see the need for a rest but he did want to look as composed as possible for the meeting.
A knock resounded and Jael looked to the door. "Come in," he said, frowning slightly.
He had expected it to be either Kieran or a servant with his bath water but from what he could feel, it was somebody else.
He stood up from his bed, what did she want?
The door opened slowly and bright red hair walked into the room. Jael winced, of course, she would be here but he didn’t think she would come to see him, let alone this soon.
