Chapter 269. They Left

Chapter 269: 269. They Left

Mauve approached Jael with hesitation. Was there something she was missing? He seemed to be in a more bad mood than when she saw him earlier. Did something happen before she showed up?

She got closer and Erick stepped out of the way for her. She stopped in front of him and tucked some of the loose hair behind her ear but she didn’t get it all out of her face, some hung by the side of her face.

He was dressed in all black, even his shirt was black. Mauve wondered if it was to blend in with the night. He would definitely be hard to find. His black hair looked hand run even though it hasn’t been minutes since he finished his bath. Mauve smiled to herself, this was typical.

"I guess, you’re ready to go," she managed to say when he didn’t say anything to her.

"Yes," he said and tucked her hair properly.

His gaze softened as she got close enough. Maybe she had read it wrong. He still seemed stiff but he wasn’t as cold.

"I hope you get there safely," she whispered with her head down.

It was only proper for her to be worried. Palers were still out there and there was a high chance they would run into one.

"I’ll try," he said, lifting her chin so she was forced to look at his face.

She stared at him for a while but he did not attempt to move closer or say anything else. Unable to take it anymore, she pulled her chin from his grip and closed the gap between them, wrapping her hands around him.

It would just be gone for the night, there was no reason to be apprehensive. Truthfully, she didn’t want him to leave but that was most likely her dependency talking. It was just a day, he would be back before she could start to miss him.

Besides, she would most likely not notice his absence, considering there were times when she didn’t see him throughout the night except during bedtime but considering their relationship now, she couldn’t say that with confidence.

He wrapped his hands around her and squeezed. She could barely feel his temperature through the layers of clothes, only the palm of his hand that grabbed the back of her head reminded her of his usual body temperature.

"Mack and Mill are in charge, let them know if you need anything."

She nodded into his chest. "I will be fine, you don’t have to worry about me."

"It is precisely for this reason, I am worried. Mill, Mack" he called out.

"Sire," Mauve heard their response while she was still pressed against his chest.

"I expect that you’d be able to handle the castle in my absence."

"Of course, Sire. You can count on me." Mack’s voice thundered, overshadowing Mill’s.

"You can count on us, Sire," Mill added behind her brother’s words.

"Okay," Jael said and released his hold on Mauve.

She slowly pulled away from him and took a step back.

"I should get going," he said to her and let go of her hand completely.

Mauve nodded and he turned her back to her and started walking toward the huge doors. She rushed after him and walked beside him.

"Let me see you out."

"There is no need for that," he said with a voice that left no room for argument.

The doors were thrown open and evening light streamed into the castle, immediately outshining the candlelight.

"It’s just the front of the castle," she said. "I am sure there is no harm in that." She said, moving closer to him as she spoke.

"I said no," Jael said sternly and Mauve shrank at his word. He must have seen the fear in her eyes because he immediately cleared his throat and added, Fine but you are to go inside as soon as I leave. That’s an order."

"I promise," she whispered.

Jael stared at her for a second as if he didn’t believe her but he immediately looked away. He grabbed her hand and carefully led her down the stairs.

Mauve twirled her feet as the sole of her shoes touched the gravel on the ground. She felt a little excited. Jael slowly let go of her hand and Sabrina rushed to her side.

"I will miss you," Sabrina yelled, gathering her in her arms again.

"Me too, hopefully, we will see again soon enough," Mauve replied and returned the hug.

"Goodbye, Sire," Herbert said, standing in front of the open door. He was the only servant that had stepped out. The rest stood with their heads bowed behind the opened doors.

"It is only for a couple of hours, Herbert. You don’t have to make it sound so solemn."

"I can’t help it, Have a safe trip, Sire."

Jael didn’t respond and Sabrina slowly let go of her as they prepared to set off. Jael, Sabrina, Damon, Danag, and Erick.

Mauve was a little shocked he didn’t add more guards but she figured his personal guards would be able to handle anything that came their way, besides, talking about it might jinx it and she did want that.

"Bye," she whispered but Jael didn’t turn around to look at her as he set off running down the path. They were fast.

"Mauve," Mill called as Mauve stared after them. "We should go inside. It is getting dark, you’ll be safer inside."

Mauve adjusted on her feet but did not attempt to walk toward the open doors. Instead, she kept her gaze forward.

"Mauve," Mill called that. "There was urgency in her tone.

"Mill," she asked softly as Jael disappeared down the path. "Do you think I could stay outside for just a couple more minutes?"

"No," Mill cried out in horror. "We must go in now," she called out. "The Primus ordered you to."

"It will only be for a few minutes, please Mill." She pouted her lips and looked up at Mill.

She didn’t particularly want to risk anything but she wouldn’t be able to get a chance like this, a couple more minutes wouldn’t hurt.
