Chapter 262. Trust Him More
Chapter 262: 262. Trust Him More
"I didn’t expect him to leave so early either."
"Oh," she said. However, he could have still informed her, she did not have to ask herself. She sighed as the servants started to serve the second meal. This wasn’t unusual, she always found out about things later than necessary.
The conversation dried up and she didn’t know what else to say and it didn’t feel appropriate to accuse him that he wouldn’t have told her even if he knew.
"You didn’t join us for the first meal, Mauve. Were you under the weather?" Sabrina suddenly asked with a concerned expression.
Mauve saw it even though she was not concentrating on them. Jael shot a look at Sabrina and Erick glared at her. Mauve adjusted in her seat as she prepared her response.
"No, I just overslept." She said with a forced chuckle. Mauve kept her gaze straight, staring at Lady Sabrina even though she could feel Jael’s gaze on her.
"That’s good. I was a bit worried. I thought to come by to check on you but I didn’t want to bother you."
Mauve’s eyes widened a little. "No, you wouldn’t have been bothering me at all. However, you don’t have to go that far, I am sure you have more important things to do." Mauve replied briefly glancing away from Sabrina and mumbling her thanks to the servant who served her food.
It was surprisingly easy to talk to the vampire and even though she knew there were most likely ulterior motives, she happily welcomed the attention.
"Important things? Of course not, I spend most of my time in the room or keeping my father company but now that he is gone, I am by myself."
Mauve wanted to ask why she stayed behind but it felt too forward and it wasn’t like she was against her presence she was glad.
"If you didn’t want to stay so much, you should have left with the Lord," Erick said darkly.
Lady Sabrina jerked her head to the side, glaring at Erick. "I have the Primus’ permission to stay, if you have a problem with it, take it up with him."
"I never said I did, you sound like you’d rather live with your Lord Garth."
Sabrina squinted her eyes at him and they did a brief staring contest but instead of replying, she simply scoffed and turned her attention to Mauve.
"I hear you have a garden on the rooftop, Mauve. May I ask for a tour of it, I badly want to see it?" She asked with a smile.
Mauve briefly looked away, "I wouldn’t say it is much of a garden and there aren’t a lot of varieties in the plant. I am sure you will be disappointed."
"Don’t sell it short, I hear you put a lot of effort into it."
"Alright, I don’t mind showing it to you but all the flowers haven’t bloomed and it will take a couple more months for it to be a proper garden," Mauve said with glee.
"I am sure it is still worth seeing now. Can we go there after the second meal?"
"You don’t need her to take you," Jael said darkly. "I can assign a servant to lead you there."
Mauve turned to face Jael for the first time since the second meal began. "I don’t mind, besides, I’ll just be in my room or the Library either way," Mauve said with excitement.
Jael frowned and looked at his plate, "If that’s what you want." He replied.
"Thank you," she cried happily.
"Thank you, Sire." Lady Sabrina said with a soft nod.
Mauve softly hummed as she dug under her breath. She was surprisingly looking forward to the tour. She did like her garden but it was no point if she couldn’t at least show it off.
She had not expected the Vampire to be interested in seeing it and she couldn’t help but admit that it was going too far. However, she would take it no matter how suspicious it seemed.
She didn’t have any friends, she couldn’t dare call Mill her friend. The vampire was simply doing her duty and she was always busy. Besides, she didn’t speak to her in the manner Sabrina did even though Mill called her by her name, she always put on the air that she was at Mauve’s service.
Mauve squinted her eyes as she took the last bite. She didn’t even realize how fast she had been eating. Was that how much she was excited?
"I see you have finished your meal," Lady Sabrina said. "Give me a few minutes."
"Take your time," she said with a soft blush and wiped her cheeks. She was slightly embarrassed.
"Are you sure you don’t want more?" Jael asked.
She shook her head, "I have eaten enough."
"I am ready, Mauve," Sabrina announced and stood to her feet.
Mauve mirrored her movement, she stepped out of her seat and did a small curtsey.
"The food was delicious," she mumbled and started for the door.
Jael looked like he was about to say something but he didn’t and she walked past him to join Sabrina and together they walked out of the door.
A thick silence fell and Erick raised his head to see Jael staring at nowhere in particular.
"Erick," he called and glanced at his personal guard with dead eyes.
"Yes, Sire," Erick answered with concern.
"Do you have any idea what Lady Sabrina is planning?" He asked, resting his elbows on the table.
"What? Why do you think I know?" Erick asked in horror.
Jael frowned at Erick’s reaction. "Because you’re constantly antagonizing her, I figured you’d at least have an idea."
"Oh! No, I don’t."
"Are you sure?" Jael asked again.
"Yes, I have no idea what she is planning even I have my suspicions but I truly have no idea."
Jael eyed him oddly, "Alright, I’d say keep an eye on her but you’ll be away for two nights but if you do hear or notice anything, let me know immediately."
"Right away, Sire." Erick nodded vigorously.
"Did you get the list from Kieran?"
Erick nodded, "He handed it to me before leaving. It’s not a lot but according to him, it might be a little hard to find them and I’ll end up having to go to more than one town."
"You can ask the physician for his help, I am sure he would be knowledgeable in this sort of thing."
"I don’t know where he is located, sire," Erick replied.
"Oh, then take Mack with you. He should know."
"Mack?" Erick asked in horror. "He is quite young, Sire. We will be dealing with lots of humans, I don’t think this is advisable."
Jael scoffed, "Only you will call a vampire who is almost forty years old, young. Do as you want. However, there better not be unnecessary delays and as I recall currently, Mack accompanied Danag and Damon to return to the physician’s home.
"Aren’t there any other guards that accompanied them?" Erick asked.
"Who knows? Danag and Damon took a number with them. You can check if you like but remember you need to leave within the hour if you want to make it out of the Nolands before sunlight."
Jael stood to his feet and turned his back to Erick. "That reminds me," he said and turned just his head to look at Erick.
"Yes," Erick replied, looking up at him.
"I have written out the letters to the necessary Lords..."
"Already?" Erick asked with wild eyes. "Is that safe?"
Jael showed his displeasure. "I appreciate your concern Erick but I am sure I can handle a few letters. Assign the guards to send them out before leaving. You should see them on my desk."
"What? Isn’t that the head guard’s task?" Erick asked in horror.
"Well, he isn’t in and as the next guard of a high rank, the duty falls on you. I hope I can count on you," He turned away from Erick and started walking towards the door.
"Yes, Sire," Erick said, rising to his feet. He gave a bow to Jael’s back and kept his head bent until he heard the door close.
Jael quickly made his way up the stairs, at the top of the stairs, he looked up at the next set of stairs and fought the urge to go check on them.
He looked away and headed for his room. He was slightly ticked off. He had cleared his schedule to spend time with her and she had looked more excited to show a stranger her garden.
Jael groaned as he made his way to his room. Somehow, he still has not gone on that tour. He wondered if she was disappointed. He made a mental note to ask her about it. He didn’t care about the garden but he was willing to take part in what interested her, maybe she would trust him more then.
