The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 263. Desolate Land
Chapter 263: 263. Desolate Land
Mauve tried to hold back her excitement as she walked beside Lady Sabrina out of the dining hall. They quickly made their way upstairs with her leading the way. They got to the top of the stairs in no time and immediately headed for the next set.
"I have never gone up this staircase before," Sabrina suddenly announced.
Mauve turned to look at the vampire, she had to lift her head to look her in the eye. Sabrina was significantly taller than she was. She had a similar build to Lady Jevera.
"Why not?" She asked with a furrowed brow. She quickly turned her attention to the road to avoid tripping.
"Well, I have never had any reason to go past here but that’s different now." She smiled at Mauve who glance at her briefly.
Whatever response Mauve wanted to say immediately died on her lips as she got to the top of the stairs. Unlike the hallway below, this one was unlit and there was no way she would make it to the stairs in this darkness.
"I didn’t bring light," she cried.
"Oh, I can see quite fine. Where are we going to?" Sabrina asked.
"At the end of this path, there should be a set of stairs leading to the rooftop."
"Oh, I can see it." She grabbed Mauve’s hand immediately and pulled her down the path.
Mauve yelped and breathlessly asked, "Are you sure I shouldn’t get a lamp?"
"Why would you? I can see fine for both of us."
"I am supposed to be leading you."
"I don’t mind, besides, this was my idea. Let me compensate you for making this request on such short notice.
They got to the foot of the stairs and Sabrina slowed down. "We are at the staircase," she announced. "Wait here." Sabrina let go of her hand and went up the stairs.
"The door is easy to open, but if it’s bolted, it’s pretty difficult. I usually have to ask Mack to unlock it for..."
The rest of Mauve’s words were drowned out by the sound of the bolt being pulled back. The door was thrown open and enough nightlight seeped in for her eyes to adjust to the darkness enough to see the stairs.
She quickly climbed up the stairs and went out the door. Sabrina closed the door behind her and they approached the garden.
"Can we sit first, all that walking has upset my stomach."
"Of course," Mauve said and tried not to show her disappointment as she led Sabrina to the only seat.
It was located beside the statue. The vampire dropped onto the seat, making an exhausted sound. Mauve quickly sat down beside her and looked to the sky, the stars shone beautifully.
"You have a beautiful garden," Sabrina said turning her head around.
"I am sure, you’ve seen better Lady Sabrina." She replied.
"Still doesn’t make yours less beautiful and please call Sabrina. I already told you this. Everyone calls me Lady, it’s exhausting. Besides, it’s either that or I’ll be forced to call you princess."
"Alright, I guess I can try, Sabrina."
"Good. You don’t seem to have gotten accustomed to the dark." At Mauve’s frown, she added, "You seem to have an issue walking down the dark path."
"Not that, I don’t have a problem with the dark but staying longer in it doesn’t mean my vision will be better. I am just concerned about running into things."
"Oh, for a second, I thought you were scared of it."
"Scared?" She laughed. "If I was scared of the dark I wouldn’t last a day here."
"Don’t you want to leave?" Sabrina asked suddenly.
Mauve froze and looked away from her. Somehow, she couldn’t help but be disappointed. She had known that Sabrina definitely wanted something but it was still a gut-wrenching feeling.
"No," she said.
"Really?" Sabrina asked and turned to look at her. "Do you like the Primus that much?" She pushed her face closer to Mauve.
"Huh?" Mauve asked with wild eyes as warmth spread to her face. She looked away immediately.
"Ah, you do," Sabrina said with a squeal. "That explains it, no human would pick this desolate land over their hometown."
"You don’t have a problem with that?"
"Why would I?"
***************************************
Mill hurried up the stairs as word reached her that the Primus wanted her attention. It must be urgent as he rarely asked for her, leaving her to exclusively attend to Mauve’s needs.
The servants hadn’t given her many details only that Jael wanted to see her in his room. She took the steps two at a time and got to the top in no time.
She knocked twice and heard his usual gruff voice give her the order to go in. She nodded even though he couldn’t see her and pushed open the door.
"Sire," she called out as she stepped inside. The first thing she noticed was how dark the room was. She closed the door and bowed her head.
"Come closer," his order rang out.
She raised her head and there he was seated on his bed in the dark. The curtains weren’t even drawn, only a bit of light seeped in through the sides.
She took a step forward and stopped just before the bed. "Sire, you called," she said with her head bent. "What would you like me to do?"
"Mill, do you know what Sabrina is planning?" He asked with his gaze straight ahead.
"I don’t understand the question, Sire," Mill responded.
"Did you know she speaks to Mauve casually?"
Mill frowned, "I am so sorry, Sire but I am unaware of this."
"Mauve didn’t mention it to you?"
She shook her head, as much as Mauve relied on her, she wouldn’t say they were close enough to have such conversations.
"Mauve doesn’t really talk to me about things like that, I am sorry, Sire."
"Don’t apologize. I called you here to give you a task They have been up there for over two hours now."
"Up? Up where?" Mill asked.
"The rooftop, Sabrina mentioned something about wanting to see it and Mauve offered to show it to her. However, it’s been two hours, I don’t think it takes that long to see such a tiny garden. I need you to check on them for me, and ask if they would need snacks or something. You can use my name for all I care about. Report back to me immediately."
"As you wish, Sire." Mill bowed one more time and quickly made her way out the door.
By the time she got to the staircase leading up to the rooftop, she could hear voices but it wasn’t loud enough for her to pick up what they were talking about.
She pulled the door open and it made a loud creaking sound. The voices immediately went silent. Mill stepped out.
"Mauve," she called as she approached to let Mauve know it was her.
There wasn’t much of a moon but the sky was bright as the stars shone brightly. Without the moon to overshadow them they let out their glow unapologetically.
"Mill," What are you doing here?" Mauve asked as she stood to her feet.
Mill stopped walking as she got to the bench. "His grace wanted me to ask if you’d like some snacks. I could bring biscuits and tea. Whatever you’d like."
Mill’s eyes slowly glanced at Sabrina who was seated on the bench and was staring up at her with an amused expression. Mill glared at her and Sabrina’s smile widened.
"Oh, he didn’t have to bother," Mauve said, "I am fine unless Sabrina would like something."
Mill blinked at the informality, a little caught off guard and he took her everything to not ask about it. "I see," Mill replied but didn’t ask Sabrina what she wanted.
"I am fine," the blond vampire replied. "If you could bring a light that would be good. Mauve wants to show me the flowers. She said it’s no fun if she can’t see what’s she talking about."
"That’s not what I said," Mauve protested but there was no hostility in her words."
"Do you want a light, Mauve?" Mill asked.
"I guess a little wouldn’t be bad. I didn’t expect to come here immediately after the second meal, so I didn’t come very prepared." She looked apologetically at Sabrina.
"I told you I can see the flowers alright. You don’t have to go so far."
Mill looked from Sabrina to Mauve, blinking rapidly. She could see the reason for the Primus’s concern, this was pretty unbelievable, especially for someone like Sabrina.
However, she could not deny that Mauve seemed to enjoy her presence, she looked at ease and didn’t act as if she wanted it to end.
Unfortunately, this was Sabrina, there was no way the vampire was doing this just to be friendly. However, she couldn’t ask now.
"I will bring a light and some snacks too, just to be safe."
"Mill," Mauve cried.
"It’s the Primus order, I can’t exactly go against it."
Mauve smiled, "If you insist, bring some fruits while you’re at it."
"Apples?" Mill asked.
Mauve nodded happily.
"I’d like some grapes please."
Mill glared at her but didn’t respond. "I will right back."
Mauve nodded and waved at her. Mill did return with a light and a tray full of snacks but there were no grapes.
