Chapter 252: 252. Wasn’t Helping
The last meal was pretty quiet, well not exactly. Danag was the only one who was usually quiet. Mauve would occasionally glance in his direction but he completely avoided her gaze.
She wondered if something happened after she left or if he was just tired from the trip back. She made a mental note to thank him whenever she got the chance.
Lord Garth, on the other hand, did a lot of speaking, he seemed particularly excited. He completely outspoke Erick who also seemed a little quiet but with the way Lord Garth kept speaking, Mauve was certain anyone would have a hard time chipping in.
He commented on the meal and commended the chef, Mister Herbert. He also talked about other Lords, she could only recognize one name.
"Sire," he said suddenly.
Mauve jerked her head in response, she immediately brought her gaze down when her eyes met with Lord Garth. She dug harder into her food, wanting to forget the look she had seen in his eyes.
"Yes, Lord Garth," Jael responded, pausing mid-slice.
"I want to thank you for letting us stay another night and for entrusting the task of rebuilding the fence to me."
Jael’s face froze and a stiff smile appeared. Mauve thought he looked like he was in pain.
"We are rebuilding the fence?" Erick suddenly called out.
"Don’t mention, Lord Garth. I dropped my problem on you." Jael responded completely ignoring Erick’s outburst.
"No, don’t say that Sire. It is my honor to do this service for you."
"Why does this seem like I am the only one unaware of this?" Erick asked again.
"How are you not aware of this?" Sabrina said distastefully.
Erick glared at her but surprisingly, he held his tongue and turned to her father. "Lord Garth, how soon do you intend to start working on the broken fence?"
"Less than a week," Lord Garth answered enthusiastically. That should be more than enough time to get the materials needed here..." Lord Garth for a while as he thought deeply.
"Less than a week? That’s pretty soon. How am I just hearing about this and why are we rebuilding it suddenly? It has been in this terrible state..."
"Sire," Lord Garth suddenly called out, drowning out the rest of Erick’s words.
Jael slowly raised his head from his meal and looked at Garth. "Yes?"
"I would need as many hands as I can get to move the materials around, would it be too much if I can get some help from the castle?" Lord Garth asked.
"Of course not, you can get as much help as you need. Now enjoy your meal. Anything else can be discussed tomorrow night." Jael said stiffly.
"Yes, thank you. I just wanted to confirm. I already agreed to take full responsibility to ask for..."
Mauve back straightened as Jael turned his gaze from the Lord who was still jabbering on. His gaze stayed briefly on her face before looking down and his gaze held.
Mauve reddened immediately, bending her head and slouching her body. She had completely forgotten about how lowcut the dress was.
She wasn’t revealing too much for her to be worried but Jael tended to have a particular look on his face whenever he stared at her in that manner.
It didn’t help that she was sitting close to him and he was considerably taller. He had no problem staring down her neckline. The worst part was he wanted her to know.
"Mauve," Jael suddenly called.
Mauve froze, she was certain Lord Garth was still speaking but the Lord immediately went silent.
"Yes," she answered softly, darting her eyes as she wondered what could be wrong enough for Jael to interrupt.
She adjusted on her seat, the shift of her being the center of attention was a little unnerving. However, she straightened her back and kept her gaze on Jael.
"How do you find your food?" He asked with a raised brow.
She nodded, still looking concerned. She was almost done eating, why was he asking? "It is really tasty."
"Would you like some more?" He asked with a hint of a smile on his lips.
Mauve blinked, did he just interrupt Lord Garth’s speech to ask if she wanted more food?
"No, this is enough." She said stiffly.
"Are you sure?" He asked, his half smile slowly turning to a smirk. His gaze rested on her chest as he said, "You’d need all the energy you can get."
Mauve’s eyes widened briefly as she realized what he meant."I am fine I don’t need more food," she said stiffly and looked at her plate, she was certain she was red.
Thankfully, the conversation picked up as soon as Jael was done talking to her. Mauve closed her eyes tightly, there was no way they didn’t know what he was talking about.
How could he ask her something like that in front of everyone? She slowly raised her eyes and they met Kieran. He smiled at her and Mauve found herself smiling back without thinking.
She returned her attention to her plate and quickly finished the rest of her meal. Jael had a meeting with the guards and servants, it was best if she headed to her room now.
She wiped her lips and dropped the napkin on the table to stand on her feet when Jael said, "Stay, we will go back together."
"Don’t you have to address the guards, I don’t want to intrude," Mauve mumbled.
"It will only take a couple of minutes, Mauve."
She nodded and relaxed in her seat, she didn’t want to be here any longer but she couldn’t argue with Jael, she wouldn’t win.
As she leaned her head against the chair, her eyes met with Lord Garth and he didn’t bother hiding his disdain. Mauve broke the gaze immediately. Jael wasn’t helping her case.
Erick looked around as his eyes widened, "Wait, is this also something I don’t know about?" He asked in horror.
"Ah, I guess I should give the announcement here first. There has been a change. Damon is the new Head guard."
