Chapter 253. Danag’s Decision
Chapter 253: 253. Danag’s Decision
Erick looked around as his eyes widened, "Wait, is this also something I don’t know about?" He asked in horror.
"Ah, I guess I should give the announcement here first. There has been a change. Damon is the new Head guard." Jael announced casually as he dropped his cutlery onto the plates. It made a soft clink sound.
"What?" Erick yelled standing to his feet. He banged his hands on the table loudly. "Just what is going on?" He asked loudly.
Jael glared at him as he brought the napkin to the corner of his lips. Without Jael saying a word, Erick’s demeanor changed and he immediately sat back down.
He cleared his throat, "I didn’t mean to react in that manner but why are you relieving Danag of his duties and giving it to him of all people." Erick pointed at Damon with disgust.
Damon didn’t so much as blink, he continued eating his meal neither responding nor acknowledging Erick’s words.
"Are you questioning my decision?" Jael asked with a raised brow.
"No, but I do believe an explanation is in place. Danag has been Head Guard for a decade, you can’t just take him off his duties without explaining why, sire." Erick said stubbornly and even though he was speaking to Jael his glare never wavered from Damon who continued to eat his meal without a word.
"Of course," Jael continued. "His utmost attention is needed elsewhere and it wouldn’t be possible to shuffle the duties of a Head Guard along with it. Danag has accepted this and he understands how important his role is."
"Yes, sire," Danag responded, straightening his back. His expression didn’t give anything away.
Erick looked at him with shock on his face and opened his mouth but immediately closed it. He turned away from Danag and glared at Damon. "Why Damon? I would do a better job than the swine."
"Watch it, Erick.." Damon replied without raising his head. "I am the Head Guard, remember? You especially don’t get to treat me in that manner."
"Are you shitt..." Erick started to say while half rising from his seat.
"Erick," Jael called out with a loud groan. "I would prefer it if you didn’t make this any harder. Also, to go against Damon’s order is to go against mine."
Erick darted his eyes, "I understand, Sire. However, anyone else but him."
"Hmm," Jael said and leaned back in his seat. "If I wanted your opinion I would have asked."
He stood up to his feet immediately and turned to Lord Garth, "It is regretful that you had to witness that, Lord Garth, Lady Sabrina. I shall retire, if you need anything the servants shall attend to you."
"No, Sire. It is no problem."
"Kieran," Jael called out.
Lord Kieran slowly raised his head. "Yes, Sire."
"The same appears to you. If there is anything that isn’t to your likely, let the servant know."
"Of course," Kieran smiled briefly. His eyes met with Mauve and he nodded at her.
Jael pulled her out of the seat and out the door. The doors closed and silence dragged on for a couple seconds before Lord Garth stood to his feet.
"I will hang around for a while father, I will come to check on you before I retire to bed." Lady Sabrina said to him as she watched her father.
"Alright." He replied, touching her shoulders softly as he went past her.
Lord Garth was barely out of the door when Erick stood to his feet, making a loud noise with the chair. He stumped his feet as he headed for the exit.
It was obvious he wasn’t pleased with the events that had occurred during the last meal. He threw the doors open and walked past Lord Garth without saying a single word.
He headed for the main entrance and walked out of the castle door. The servants bowed as they watched him go but he didn’t spare them any glance.
He didn’t stop walking until he got to the side of the castle. There he rested on the wall and looked up to the sky. It was slowly getting brighter. A few more minutes and it would be sunrise.
Erick heard the sounds of feet but didn’t bother to look. He knew who was approaching.
"What are you doing here?" Danag scolded.
"When did you find out you weren’t going to be Head Guard anymore?" Erick asked.
Danag sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. "Is that what this is about?"
"Answer the question because for some reason I am the last person to know about what goes in the castle recently considering until a few weeks ago, I was in charge of it."
Danag sighed again, "I really don’t have time for this, Erick."
"Why? If the Primus won’t give me a reason, at least do. You told me you couldn’t give him the letter to read but it is pretty obvious that isn’t the case. What happened?"
"Nothing, The primus wants me to concentrate all my attention on the palers, that’s what’s important right now. A squad would be set up soon, I will have no time for anything else."
"That’s not true. No one is better at multitasking." Erick said, finally turning to look at Danag.
"Let it go, I am going inside. You can come in whenever you feel like."
"The fact that you’re not fighting this is frustrating."
"It’s just a position, it doesn’t mean anything. Besides, this is for the best."
"You know that’s not what I am talking about, Danag."
"Let it go, I know you’re just pissed it’s not going to be your cousin because that would mean Damon would have a chance and you’d rather die than see that happen."
All the color drained from Erick’s face. "That has nothing to do with what we are talking about," Erick shouted, his voice shaking some birds out of the trees.
"I don’t care, I am going in. I have decided to stop meddling. If this is the path the Primus has chosen, it is only right that we support him."
Erick laughed, "You make it sound as if he would choose her."
"I never said anything like that but one thing is for sure, he isn’t choosing anyone else until we have dealt with the palers. Also, you know better than to let anyone else know about what we know, especially Mauve. I am done here and stop throwing a tantrum every time, it’s a sore sight."
Erick opened his mouth to respond but Danag already had his back turned. To say he was angry was an understatement.
However, he couldn’t deny that he didn’t see this coming. Somehow, he had known the letter wouldn’t be enough to get the human out of here.
"Fuckkkk!" He yelled out into the night feeling extra frustrated.
Danag was right, if he had been behaving right, Jael would have definitely chosen him as the next Head Guard instead of Damon and he had ruined that with his attitude. As if he needed to be told that right now.
He had to get a grip on himself, nothing was going his way. This was a kick to the groin for sure. Anyone else but Damon. The last thing he wanted was for Damon having an edge over him.
He bent his head. He would have to find a way to find the human tolerable, the Primus truly favored her enough to remove Danag. This was concerning but as Danag has said, he was likely not choosing anyone.
However, that wasn’t the reason he was fixated. If Jevera didn’t end up with the Primus, she would likely look to Damon and he would rather die than let that happen. Damon should know his place.
Erick winced as he felt the heat, he had been too distracted to notice until the sun rose. He rushed for the doors. It wasn’t enough to burn him yet but any longer and it would be a different story.
The guards were still by the door. They pulled the door open as soon as he knocked and closed the door behind him. Erick adjusted his sleeves and headed for the stairs.
"I was thinking you would not come back," Lady Sabrina cackled. She stood in front of the stairs with her hands on her waist.
Erick swore loud enough for her to hear but he didn’t speak to her instead he went past her, brushing her.
She gasped, "Don’t test me, Erick."
"I am in a bad mood, leave me alone."
"That’s precisely why I am here. My only job is to make you as miserable as possible." She smirked and grabbed his arm pulling him back.
Erick snapped and immediately closed the gap between them. He grabbed her neck, not caring that anyone could see them.
"Are you sure you should be doing this?" Sabrina said with a smirk. "You’ll regret it."
"Try it," Erick spat out.
