Chapter 244: 244. It Won’t Change Anything

"Come in," Jael called out and the door was thrown open.

Danag walked in alone and his eyes immediately zoned in on Mauve as she sat on Jael’s legs. The sound of the door closing sounded too loud.

Mauve felt cold at the gaze that met her. It was very brief and if she wasn’t looking at Danag, she wouldn’t have seen it. She shivered a little and tried to get off Jael’s legs but he didn’t let her.

"Sire," Danag said bowing slightly.

He took a step forward and stopped in front of the desk. "Princess," he said stiffly. The word sounded like a curse and there was also no smile on his lips.

"Danag," Mauve said softly, her smile upside down.

"What can I help you with, Danag?" Jael said condescendingly.

"I would like us to continue the earlier conversation, Sire."

"Hmm," Jael groaned. "I will let you know when I am ready. You can leave."

"Sire," Danag said darkly. "It will only take two minutes to read the letter. This is important. Please, Sire."

Jael groaned again and traced Mauve ’s arm with his fingers while the other was still wrapped around her.

"Danag take a hint. I am in no mood to read it. I will let you know when I am ready. There are far more important things to be concerned about."

"This is just as important, the information in the letter is bound to change everything including the al..."

"Danag!" Jael called darkly.

Mauve jerked at the sound of his voice, the last time she had seen him this angry was when that vampire attacked her.

"I apologize, Sire," Danag replied immediately bowing all the way to his waist. "Please forgive my urgency but that just how important this is. We can’t drag our feet around this."

"I don’t care for what else you have to say but if you say it is that important, I believe you. However, I don’t think it is as important as the meeting with Lord Garth after sun down and prepare yourself, you’ll be in attendance."

"Yes, Sire," Danag said, his head still bent.

"You’re dismissed."

Danag stood upright. "And the letter?" He asked adamantly.

Jael cursed, "After the damn meeting, Danag. One more word about it before the stipulated time and you’ll..." The rest of Jael’s words trailed as Mauve covered his arm around her with her own.

He looked at her and she looked away from him but didn’t take her hand away. "Leave us," Jael said and Danag bowed again before rushing out of the room.

"What is it?" Jael asked as the door closed.

"Nothing," she said and quickly removed her hand.

"Speak."

"You’ll get angry at me."

Jael sighed, "I promise I won’t. Now speak."

"You’re raising your voice."

Jael groaned, "I am not raising my voice. I am just speaking directly into your ear."

"At this rate, I’ll go deaf." She was trying to diffuse the situation but at this point, she was sure she just made it worse.

Mauve felt her heart dropped to her stomach. She had instinctively touched Jael because she didn’t like the way he was scolding Danag, especially when the guard did nothing wrong.

If the letter was truly as important as Danag said, Jael shouldn’t have to be begged to read it. She also knew how particular Danag was about his duty. The fact that he was that adamant could only mean the letter was of grave importance.

A letter that could change everything, she wondered what kind of letter it was. She couldn’t hear the rest of Danag’s words because Jael had stopped him but she would be lying if she said she wasn’t curious.

"I will fix it," Jael said. Barely a millisecond later Mauve felt a warm tongue on her ear and she yelped.

"I don’t think that’s how you fix it." She blurted out.

"My methods have been scientifically proven."

"What?" Mauve laughed.

"Speak," Jael said. His words sounded firm but it wasn’t harsh.

He turned the side of her face when she was taking too long so she would look at him. "Speak, Mauve. No matter what you say, I won’t get angry."

"Promise?" She grinned.

"Yeah, yeah now out with it."

She looked down, turning away from him. She leaned back so she had her back on his chest and lifted one of his hands. It was heavier than she thoughts but she needed something to fiddle with.

"You were yelling at Danag even though he was just doing his job. I am sure the letter is as important as he says."

"I don’t think it is," he whispered.

"Why not?" She turned her head so she could look at him.

"Because, irrespective of the contents, it won’t change anything."

Mauve frowned slightly and pouted a little, her eyes squinting. "What makes you so sure?"

"Do you know what the content of the letter is?" He asked with a smirk.

She shook her head, "No, I don’t."

"Can you take a guess?"

"Does it concern me?" She said with a deeper frown.

"I don’t know," Jael said with a straight face.

"What?"

"I don’t know what the contents hold."

"All the more reason why you should read it." She yelled. "How do you know it’s not important when you don’t even know the contents?"

"Do you want me to read it?"

Mauve nodded.

"Even though it will change everything?" He asked.

"You just said the contents won’t change anything." She replied.

He gave her a side eye and smirked, "You’re right."

"Then go read it."

"Right now?" He asked.

She nodded.

"No." He said and adjusted her so she was lying on his chest again. "I’ll read it but not right now."

"Jael," she protested. "What’s with you and not reading let..." The rest of her words zoned out as he dug his teeth into her ear. "Jael!"

"Hmmm," he mumbled with his teeth still grazing her ear.

"What’s the point if you don’t read it right now?" As she spoke she tried to pull her ear away from his grasp.

"Stay here with me, the letter can wait." He whispered and Mauve immediately stopped fighting him.
