Chapter 243. Kieran’s Formality
Chapter 243: 243. Kieran’s Formality
"If it is about a letter, I don’t want to hear it!"
Mauve jerked at the sound of Jael’s voice, she had been intently listening to their conversation and the sudden increase in his voice startled her.
"Do you not care to know how he is fairing?" Kieran asked stubbornly.
"He keeps writing you letters, right? Which means he isn’t dead and he can decide to come back. It has been almost half a century and he still hasn’t at this point, he is dead to me. There is no point hoping he will ever return."
Kieran jerked slightly at Jael’s words. "Jael!" He called out.
Jael leaned back and chuckled. "You haven’t called me by my name since my parents’ death."
"You don’t mean what you just said, do you?" Kieran asked softly, he blinked rapidly.
"It doesn’t matter what I mean, it won’t change the situation. Don’t worry your head so much. It has been this long and you still haven’t changed. You’re dismissed, get some rest. I’ll tell a servant to get you a hot bath and hot meal too. Don’t even think about leaving tomorrow night."
"I have to return to the Xanthus estate to get back to work and complete the drug."
"An extra day wouldn’t kill you and the guards would need three nights to get you what you need. I am sure an extra day won’t affect your work. If it does, I can always move the meeting a couple more days."
"If you insist, Sire. I will stay and there is no need to move the meeting."
"Okay. However, don’t hesitate to let me know if you need more time."
"I don’t, I have more than enough."
Jael shrugged slightly. "I will test run the sedative myself."
Kieran immediately sat upright, "I will have to protest against this, Sire. Please let Danag test run it."
"Are you worried you might do a bad job?" Jael asked with a smug expression.
"No," Kieran said matter of factly.
"Well, there we have it. It doesn’t matter who test runs it."
"In this situation, it matters. You’re King."
Jael scoffed, "You’re not going convince me. Now, unless you have something else to add that relates to the meeting, you may leave."
Kieran shook his head, "No, Sire."
"Good. I will see you during the last meal. Do get enough rest, I can see you haven’t slept properly. Do get some rest when the sun comes up."
Kieran nodded and rose to his feet. "I will, Sire and I am glad I could be of help to you."
"Your formality pisses me off sometimes. You’re always of help to me."
Kieran bowed and slowly retreated. He stopped in the middle of the study and turned to look at Mauve. He nodded slightly at her and she waved but remained in her seat.
"I guess I will see you around."
"Of course, I am glad you’re staying an extra night." She said with a big smile and tried to curtsey while sitting but finally giving up she rose to her feet.
She shuffled her feet, fighting the urge to rush to him but Jael had looked annoyed when she didn’t do as he asked so she didn’t want to leave.
He rolled up his lips into a tight smile and walked to the door. Mauve sat back on the couch and rested her arms on the chair. She watched Kieran’s back until he closed the door as he walked out.
She slowly turned her head to look at the desk and saw Jael’s gaze on her, her eyes darted to the side. She couldn’t really see his face and his eyes didn’t so much as flicker.
He stretched out his hand, opened his palm, and closed it, he repeated this gesture and Mauve stood up. She carefully walked towards him. It was easier to stare at his face as he back the window.
She stopped in front of the desk and got a clearer view of his face. His blue eyes looked tired and there was a slight furrow on his forehead.
"No, come to me." He ordered.
She nodded and approached his, going around the table. She stopped about three feet away from him and he leaned toward the side and pulled her into his lap.
"It’s annoying when you’re cautious with me."
"I am not cautious," she pouted. "You seemed angry."
He sighed and pulled her so her back was resting on his chest. "I am not neither was I angry earlier," he replied and sniffed her hair. "You were pacing the front of the study."
She pouted slightly, "Danag told me you were in the study but occupied. I didn’t know if I could come in or not, so I was contemplating... Wait, how did you know I was pacing?"
"I am not telling you. Why did you want to see me?"
Mauve looked down immediately. "I don’t have a reason," she whispered.
She was bored and wanted to see him. She was also tired of knitting, the cap was looking more like a sock. Annoyed, she had pulled out the whole thing.
She would have to ask Yasmin for more lessons if she ever wanted to be good at it. She intended to be, she wanted to give it to Jael as soon as she could.
He pulled her even closer and wrapped his arm around her soaking in her scent. "That’s a good enough reason to come see me." He whispered, directly into her ears. "Next time, don’t be so hesitant."
She nodded and opened her mouth to reply to him when a loud knock resounded in the study. Mauve instinctively tried to get out of his legs but he held her.
"Just where do you think you’re going?"
"Someone is here to see you, I don’t want to interrupt." Her face suddenly felt hot as Jael wrapped his arms even tighter around her body.
She could tell he wanted whoever was behind the door to walk in with her in this position.
It was one thing to be this cozy in private but she felt slightly uncomfortable when there was an audience especially because she knew they wouldn’t approve.
"Come in," Jael called out and the door was thrown open.
