The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 239. With Time
Chapter 239: 239. With Time
"Can I go ask as far as that huge tree?"
It was a risky question as she did not move more than five feet away from him. To ask to go fifteen more was a bit overboard but she couldn’t let herself be restricted forever.
"No," he said darkly.
Mauve’s face immediately fell and she slightly pouted her lips. At first, Jael’s expression didn’t change, then she heard a loud sigh.
"I’ll speak to Lord Garth by sundown. Give it time. As soon as the fence is fixed you can roam around as much as you want."
"Really?" She squealed, coming even closer. She stopped in front of him and pushed her heel upward so she could have a closer look at his face.
"But only in the daytime."
She nodded several times. She didn’t need him to tell her this. She had no intention to face another paler soon. She still had the scars from the last one.
She grabbed her shoulder instinctively and she noticed Jael’s eyes fluttered toward her shoulder and back to her face.
"Yes," he said, his tone a little dark. "Let’s go in."
"Jael, we just got here. We can’t possibly go in now."
He squinted his eyes, "You get ten minutes."
Mauve pouted her lips even more but she didn’t push it. She could wait, he was already going as far as to fix the fence, it was best if she exercised patience.
By the looks of things she was going to be here for a while, hopefully, with time she would be able to convince him to let her do other things.
She moved away from him and walked down the path, making sure not to move too far. The sun was about to rise but she would need more than ten minutes to see it.
She could always go to the rooftop if she was desperate and she had a better view there. However, she had no intention of doing that.
She touched a blade of grass and quickly pulled back her hand as she felt the tiny bristles. She rubbed her finger to make sure that none of the bristles were stuck on her skin.
"Mauve," Jael called.
She sighed before turning around, "Coming," she called out as she walked to him.
She stopped in front of him and he stared at her for a few seconds before unfolding his arms and pushing himself off the wall.
"It will be sunrise in a few minutes, we should go in," he announced.
She nodded her head and he grabbed her wrist, leading her to the front door, they climbed the few set of stairs, and the doors were immediately thrown open.
The guards bowed and Jael walked past them with his hand still around Mauve’s wrist. He pulled her through the open space to the stairs.
"Do you need me to carry you?" He asked, turning around to look at her.
"No," she muttered pulling her hand from his grasp.
He smirked, "After you, then." He gestured to the stairs with the hand that was wrapped around her wrist.
She rolled her eyes and picked up her dress. She took the first step forward and gently lifted the second. Mauve squinted her eyes as she took another step. It was hard to walk knowing that he was staring.
Thankfully, she got to the top of the stairs without incident. At the top of the stairs, she saw Mill standing a few feet away in front of the door to her room.
"Mill," she called and rushed forward.
"Sire," Mill said, bowing.
Jael grunted his reply.
"Mauve," Mill smiled at her as she stopped in front of Mill. "I didn’t know you were with His Grace. I wanted to let you know your bath water is ready..."
"Put it in my room," Jael interrupted. He stopped beside Mauve and Mill took a step back to give room.
"Yes Sire," she replied, bowing again.
Mauve jerked her head to him but he refused to meet her gaze. She looked away and grabbed her hand. He pulled her away as Mill still kept her head bent.
She went along with him while waving at Mill with her free hand. The vampire waved back at her before she started to walk toward the stairs.
Jael pushed open the door to his room and pulled Mauve in, closing the door as soon as they got it in. He turned around suddenly, closing the gap between them and Mauve took a step back. Her back hit the door, stilling her movement.
"Scared?" He asked with amusement in his voice.
"No, but it’s startling if you just turn around without prior warning."
"Is that so?" He asked and tucked some of her hair behind her left ear.
Mauve shivered a little as she felt his cold finger on her ear. "Yes," she managed to reply.
"Next time you’ll give me a proper tour of your garden. For now, make do with going outside the castle."
Mauve blinked rapidly as she realized it was compensation for earlier. Did he just apologize? Not that she thought there was anything to apologize about.
She blinked again. His roundabout way of doing things was annoying. However, she would have to get used to it, if she wanted to avoid the fights.
She tried not to smile as she remembered when he had asked Lord Levaton to let her see the garden. He cared for her, at least that much she knew even if it was just for a while.
He cupped the side of her face as his eyes scanned her face. She leaned into his hand and said, "Thank you."
He opened his mouth to speak when a knock rang out. He grabbed her waist and pulled her against him. Her head landed on his chest and his hand wrapped tightly around her.
She took a deep breath and caught a whiff of the fabric but nothing else. She could feel how cold he was as her head lay on his chest. He took a step back with her against him and open the door.
"Sire," Mill called, stunned.
"You can leave as soon as you drop it," he said and stepped aside to give her room to walk in.
She nodded and briskly walked in. A servant followed behind her carrying a bucket of water. She dropped the bath in the corner, bowed again and they both fled the room.
