Chapter 236: 236. Conversation with Sabrina (2)

"What’s your name?" Lady Sabrina suddenly heard.

Mauve breath caught in her throat as she raised her head. Surely, her ears were deceiving her.

Lady Sabrina frowned slightly and then repeated, "What’s your name?"

"Oh, I am sorry. Mauve, my name is Mauve." Her voice sounded unsteady. This was no surprise, she couldn’t believe this was happening.

"I’m Sabrina," she said sweetly.

Mauve found herself smiling at her even though she was anxious as hell, "I know, Lady Sabrina."

Why was this vampire talking to her and smiling too? Mauve twisted her fingers under the table. Was there something she was missing?

Her eyes darted around as her brain wondered if this was a flight situation because there was no way she would win a fight.

"Oh, you do?" She smiled, revealing impeccable teeth. The arrangement was flawless. "Just Sabrina is fine and I can call you Mauve, right?"

Mauve felt sweat pool in her palms. The vampire wanted her to call her Sabrina. If this wasn’t a red flag, she didn’t know what else was.

Lady Sabrina has not so much as looked at her before the second meal and now they were on a first-name basis. What was going on?

There was no way she could pretend that this was just Sabrina being nice. There were lots of times she could have introduced herself but didn’t so why now?

"You don’t have to look so alarmed," she immediately called out. "I really don’t mean any harm and I know I should have done this earlier but the opportunity has never risen."

Mauve’s lips formed a thin line. This was the first time they would be alone together. Should she trust this, even with how suspicious it seems?

Mauve bit her cheeks as she mentally smacked herself.

This was what she wanted, another vampire aside from Mill and the three musketeers speaking to her but here she was doubting the gesture.

"Yes," she forced herself to say. "You can call me Mauve but I am not sure I will be able to call you Sabrina."

She doubted this would look well, Erick had requested she added Lord to his name but now that she thought about it, he was probably just being an ass.

"Oh, please do," Sabrina said, leaning forward. "Nothing will make me happier."

Mauve instinctively leaned back. She didn’t even think about it. Her body just moved on its own. Even though she had convinced herself that there was nothing fishy about this, she couldn’t help but be wary.

"Sorry," Sabrina said with an awkward chuckle.

"No, no. It’s fine. I am just a little overwhelmed..." She held in the rest of her words. There was no way she could tell the vampire no other vampire spoke to her and this was completely unnatural.

"I understand."

Mauve nodded and looked to the door. Not knowing what else to say to her. She hoped someone would come in through the door soon enough. She didn’t want to continue the conversation.

"How do you find life here? I’m sure it must be completely different from what you’re used to."

Mauve chuckled nervously, "It is not that bad and I like it here."

Mauve noticed the slight lift of Sabrina’s brows. It was brief but since she was staring, she didn’t miss it. She frowned slightly.

Was the vampire trying to get information from her? What could she possibly want to know? She could think of anything that she was aware of that could be useful to Sabrina.

She adjusted in her seat, looked to the door again, and back to Sabrina. The vampire was still staring at her.

"You do?" She smiled. "That’s unusual."

Mauve kept her lips sealed. What could she possibly say to that?

"Oh, I’m glad that you like it but it must be a little weird. Sitting in the dark, almost no windows..."

The rest of the words dried on her lips and she leaned back into her seat as the door opened. Mauve straightened immediately and quickly looked away from the door as their eyes met.

Erick squinted his eyes as he took in the scene. He stumped toward the table. Mauve could feel his gaze on her. Neither of them spoke to the other and Sabrina didn’t bother looking at him.

He didn’t stop walking until he got to the seat next to her. She turned her head to look at him and instantly regretted her decision.

She turned her head away, at this point she might have to ask him what she did wrong but with the way he stared at her she knew it was best to keep her distance.

He pulled back the chair, scratching it against the floor. Mauve winced slightly at the grating sound. He moved between the chair and the table and pulled the chair closer as he sat down.

He rested his hand on the table a little loudly and Mauve jumped.

"Tch. Would you stop acting as if I will pounce on you?" Erick said with an irritated tone to his voice.

"That’s because you keep acting like you will. Don’t fault her for reacting like that." Sabrina called out. "Strutting in here with a menacing stare, dragging the chair across the floor and banging the table. When are you going to learn some manners?"

Mauve didn’t know who was more surprised at Sabrina’s words between her and Erick. He slowly turned away from Mauve to look at Sabrina. Mauve could clearly see the disdain in his eyes.

"You don’t get to talk to me like that!" He said.

"Why not?" Lady Sabrina said and folded her arms. "You talk to everyone like that, why are you the exception?"

Erick’s eyes lowered and for a second Mauve feared the worst. However, Erick didn’t say a word, just leaned back on his seat and looked straight ahead.

Mauve let out her breath, it wasn’t like she was expecting an actual fight to break out but even the banter bothered her. Still, it felt nice to see someone put Erick in his place for her sake.
