Chapter 231. Just Like Your Cousin
Chapter 231: 231. Just Like Your Cousin
"It’s not that, I just didn’t expect you’d want to go there. You haven’t been up there in a while." She said, gripping the hem of her dress with her free hand while he still held onto her wrist.
Jael smirked to himself, she was adorable. She didn’t meet his eyes as she spoke, instead, she stared at his chin. He had been worried that the conversation about palers had affected her but she didn’t seem too bothered by it.
Still, it had pissed him off that Lord Garth had chosen that moment to speak about it. If he had been so curious, he should have asked earlier.
He closed the gap between them and lifted her chin. Her bright eyes fluttered to his eyes and then back down.
His eyes strayed to her lips and then back to her eyes. He would be lying if he said the thought of taking them right now didn’t cross his mind.
"Only because I’ve been busy." He whispered, studying her face.
Her eyes squinted a little as if she had a hard time believing his words. He couldn’t blame her as he himself couldn’t understand the need to want to spend more time with her.
However, he certainly didn’t want to spend the rest of his day in the dark study. He would rather not see the inside of it for as long as he could avoid it.
"Alright," she gave up. "I haven’t been there today either. It will be nice to see it together," she said with a bright smile.
"Good," he replied and quickly turned away, pulling her up the stairs with him. She rushed after him and they got to the top of the stairs in no time. However, there were three more sets of stairs to go.
...
Lady Sabrina had her gaze locked on Mauve as she watched her leave the dining hall with Jael’s palm around her wrist.
She didn’t turn away from the door until she heard she saw it close and completely lost sight of her. She turned to look at her father and he had resumed eating.
He picked up the napkin and wiped his lips. "Sabrina," he said. "I will take my leave now, if you need me I’ll be in my room."
"Of course, Father. Please try to get some rest. You haven’t done so." She said with concern in her eyes.
He laughed, "I am not that old that you’ll be concerned about me for running a couple of miles. It would be weird if I needed to rest."
"I know but please try not to move around, you tend to let your curiosity get the better of you."
"I just told you I will be in my room."
"Yes, it doesn’t mean you’ll be in there for long."
He tapped her shoulder, "You get some rest." He walked out of the room without looking back.
As soon as her father got to the door, Erick rose to his feet. He adjusted his tunic in preparation to leave.
"Stay," Lady Sabrina ordered.
Erick frowned, "Excuse me."
"Please, I need to talk to you." Lady Sabrina said sweetly with a soft smile.
"I don’t," Erick said and pulled back his chair.
"This is important."
"Hmph," he scoffed. "I don’t care."
"It’s about your cousin." She called out.
Erick’s hand on the top of the seat froze and slowly raised his head to look at her. He squinted his eyes at her for a second.
"What about her?"
"If you sit, we can discuss this."
"I’d rather not."
"It’s best if you sit, it is not going to be a quick conversation."
"Leave," Erick said darkly to the servants gathered in the corner and they all bowed and scrambled out of the dining hall.
As the door closed, Erick took his seat, he stared at Lady Sabrina with his lips pulled back against his face and his eyes wide.
"Speak," he muttered.
"Where is she?" Sabrina asked, leaning forward a little.
Erick leaned back and folded his arms. "Are you here to give me information or to ask of me?"
"Both," Sabrina replied.
"Well," Erick said with a condescending look. "I don’t see how her location is important."
"It’s not but her absence from here only confirms the rumor that The King chased her off."
Erick’s eyes darkened, "We both know that’s a rumor you made up."
"True," Sabrina said with a shrug and a smirk. "However, there is truth in them. She has been with The King for almost a decade now and not once have I seen him treat her as good as the human."
Erick leaned forward, letting his annoyance seep out. "I know you don’t like that my cousin has such an advantage over you but don’t go around making assumptions. She is still the closest vampire to be his mate. Don’t think you have a chance now."
"A chance?" Sabrina chuckled. "I am not stupid to think I can win him over. He won’t even look at me. I am just concerned," her voice softened some more.
Erick smiled stiffly, "You don’t have any reason to be concerned."
"You don’t have to worry about me. Besides, you didn’t answer my question, did The King chase her off?"
"I don’t see why I have to respond to you," he replied and rose to his feet.
"Erick," she said. "You must understand that I don’t pose any threat, I just want to understand the position of the human. You of all people must know the gravity of the situation."
"I can’t help if you don’t tell me."
"Help?" Erick threw his head and laughed. "You would rather see Jevera dead than Jael’s mate!"
Lady Sabrina winced, "Irrespective of our strained relationship, we are still friends even if she won’t admit it. However, even if I don’t want her a step ahead of me, I wouldn’t want the next mate to be a human."
"Shut your mouth! Don’t you dare insult The King like that!"
Lady Sabrina sighed, "You’re just like your cousin." She said and rose to her feet to leave.
"Wait," Erick suddenly called out.
