Chapter 230. No Supporters

Chapter 230: 230. No Supporters

"Sire," Lord Garth called as Mauve picked up the cutlery.

She turned to look at Jael and he looked engrossed in thought. She wondered what he was thinking about and looked away only to see Lady Sabrina staring intensely.

It took all her willpower for her not to jerk in fright. She quickly brought her eyes down and began to eat. She fluttered her eyes upward after a couple of seconds but Lady Sabrina already looked away.

"Sire," Lord Garth called again when he got no response from Jael.

"Lord Garth," he finally replied coldly.

"I know this is not the right time to discuss this but I can barely hold in my curiosity. Were you indeed attacked by two palers simultaneously?" Lord Garth asked, his expression showing a mix of worry and interest.

Mauve’s heart skipped a beat at the question. Her memory flooded and she looked at Jael to distract herself.

His grip tightened on the spoon and for a second Mauve thought it might break. Lord Garth didn’t notice as he had his eyes glued to Jael’s face.

"I am afraid, yes," Jael replied stiffly.

Lord Garth’s eyes widened and a brief look of fear passed across his face. "One Paler is enough trouble, two. I am truly glad you’re alive."

"Hmm," Jael replied, his eyes moved sideways to stare at Mauve and she quickly looked away. She would have sworn he looked concerned but she was probably imagining that. Besides, she didn’t stare at him long enough to be certain.

"Might I ask Lord Garth how you got to know?" He turned to the Lord as he spoke.

Lord Garth immediately looked uncomfortable. His eyes darted to his daughter and then to Jael. "Rumors, Your Grace, I didn’t hear anything concrete."

"Is that so?" Jael asked darkly. "But surely someone must have told you this rumor, who was it?" He raised a brow.

"A guard," Lady Sabrina replied instead. "I heard it from a guard and I informed my father."

Jael’s gaze darkened even more, "I don’t suppose you heard it from the guard directly."

"No," she said but didn’t add any more.

Jael’s face brightened unnaturally. "It is a tough time for us, as much as there is truth in this rumor, I don’t want it spreading too quickly. I don’t want the people panicking unnecessarily. As you have said, two palers attacking simultaneously means trouble, and for all, we know it might be a coincidence, no need to raise an alarm without concrete information. I would prefer if you kept this to yourself, Lord Garth, Lady Sabrina."

By the end of his words, Jael’s face was completely expressionless.

"Yes, Sire." They said simultaneously, adjusting in their seats.

"You can count on us, Sire." Lord Garth added.

Jael smiled but it looked forced, his eyes looked blank and the smile didn’t reach them. "I appreciate your continuous support and I will likely need more of your help."

Lord Garth nodded, his face lighting up like a candlelight in a darkroom. "I am willing to help in any way I can, please do not hesitate to ask."

Jael’s smile remained in place, it was starting to look like a mask at this point. "Please, continue your meal. Don’t let the conversation ruin it."

Lord Garth nodded and did as Jael said. The rest of the meal was in complete silence. Mauve kept her head low and her lips sealed throughout the meal.

Except for the occasional glance from Lady Sabrina, no one spoke to her. Lord Garth didn’t even look in her direction and the energy from Erick was so intense, not once did she look in his direction.

She would be lying if she said she had not noticed his animosity since she returned. Usually, he was just rude to her but now she felt a little threatened.

She wondered if it had to do with Lady Jevera. Did he know that Jael asked her not to return with them? She knew they were cousins and was in full support of Lady Jevera’s relationship with Jael.

However, she was sure Lady Sabrina was studying her. Why? She couldn’t possibly guess. The last time she saw the vampire, Lady Sabrina didn’t take any interest in her.

Her sister Lady Helana had shown more interest even though the lady had spoken about her as if she wasn’t there. The attention was uncomfortable, it only succeeded in making her even more self-conscious and she thought about things she didn’t want to.

She ate quickly, her stomach feeling tighter and tighter with each spoon but somehow she managed to eat every bite.

Jael pulled back his chair and rose to his feet. "Get enough rest, Lord Garth, Lady Sabrina. The servants will give you whatever you want."

"Thank you, Sire." They said simultaneously.

He turned away from them and looked at Mauve, "Are you done?" He asked.

She nodded quickly and slowly stood to her feet. He grabbed her wrists and pulled her to the door with him. Mauve didn’t help but notice Lord Garth’s puzzled expression.

Mauve closed her eyes tightly. She didn’t need anyone to tell her Lord Garth and his daughter were not one of her supporters.

Besides, it’s not like there was anything to support. This would likely only last as long as Jael fancied her. Lady Jevera was more than enough proof.

"Don’t you have to speak to Lord Garth?" Mauve asked softly as the door closed behind them. Speaking kept her thoughts at bay.

"Hmm, not right now. He just arrived, I shouldn’t bombard him. There is still enough time. Besides, knowing Lord Garth, he would probably stay as long as he can."

"Okay," she said softly.

Jael frowned, "Let’s go to the roof," he suddenly announced.

Mauve immediately stopped walking. Jael turned around to look at her. They were standing just at the foot of the stairs.

"Mauve," he called gently, taking a step toward her.

"Are you serious?" She asked with a baffled expression.

"Of course, I am, or would you prefer not to go there."

"It’s not that, I just didn’t expect you’d want to go there."
