Chapter 229. Glaring
Chapter 229: 229. Glaring
Jael pushed Mauve’s door a little too forcefully. He didn’t have any reason to be here but somehow he was. Mill and Mauve jumped at the sound of the door opening.
"Jael," Mauve cried and rose to her feet.
"Sire," Mill said and bowed her head.
He kept a bland expression as he walked in even though he could feel a knot in his stomach that was slowly tying tighter as he walked in.
Her black hair with streaks of white was tied up in a bun, and a few strands hung loosely around the side of her face.
He picked up the pace and was in front of her in seconds. She shrank a little at his gaze but he couldn’t stop staring.
The gold jewelry matched her eyes which reflected a golden hue from the candlelight. She bent her head slightly, hiding her eyes from him.
Jael used a finger to lift her chin so she was looking at him again and his eyes scanned her face. Without hesitation, he bent his head low enough and planted a kiss on her lips.
He pulled back and with a smile said, "You should wear jewelry more often."
She instinctively reached for the thin necklace around her neck. "It was Mill’s idea," she whispered with a hint of color on her cheeks.
"It is a good idea."
She blushed profusely and her eyes darted around. Jael bit the inside of his cheeks as he fought the urge to tease her.
"I suppose you’re ready then," he said instead.
"I just need to wear my shoes."
He touched the side of her lips with his fingers, he would rather kiss her again but he knew he would have to skip the second meal if he did.
He pulled back completely, standing in the corner. "I will wait," he replied.
She smiled brightly at him and nodded. Jael winced at her genuine happiness. It was hard to have doubts about her when she looked at him like that.
Right now, he will go with the flow. He will find out sooner or later what was going on.
"I am ready," she said and skipped to him.
He grabbed her wrist and pulled her to him. She gasped as she pressed her body against him and Jael could feel her blood pulse where he held her.
He could also hear and feel her beating heart but most of all her warmth and scent overwhelmed him. It was astonishing how she was constantly this warm and smelt this good.
He took a step to the side, out of her embrace, and then headed for the door with his palm around her wrist. She didn’t hesitate to go along with him.
"Bye Mill," she said, waving as they walked out of the room.
Jael realized he paid Mill no attention, he could even remember what she wore. He glanced at Mauve who was lightly skipping to keep up with him.
He slowed down immediately to match her pace. He saw the relief in her gaze before she turned to look at him and immediately looked away.
"Why do you only hold my gaze when you are glaring at me?"
"What?" She said, her brows furrowing adorably as she tried to process his words. "That’s not true."
"It is," he said and looked away from her. They reached the stairs.
He looked at her, catching her gaze and she looked away. Jael threw his head back and chuckled.
She pouted, her cheeks red a little. "I am not telling," she cried and tried to rush down the stairs but he easily pulled her back.
He poked her nose, "We can’t afford to have you tripping over the stairs."
She glared at him, "I am not going to trip."
Jael smirked and she tried to pull her hand from his grasp. "You don’t have to tell me, let’s go eat."
She scoffed and took a step down but didn’t rush ahead as she had down the first time. By the end of the stairs, she was leaning into him as they walked through the huge space.
He kept his gaze straight ahead and his lips sealed. As soon as the guards standing in front of the dining hall appeared in view, she pulled away from him and Jael ground his jaws.
The doors were immediately thrown open and she walked inside a foot away and behind him.
Lord Garth and his daughter were already seated. They both stood up as soon as they saw it was him, Erick sat across them and he also stood up.
His eyes glanced at Mauve but Jael didn’t see this because he had his eyes glued to Lady Sabrina who had chosen Mauve’s seat.
She used to sit two seats away from him but now she sat right next to him and always on the left side of the table, which was currently occupied.
As if noticing his demeanor, she pulled her hand from his grasp and rushed to the right side, the seat closest to him wasn’t occupied. She curtsied and stood in front of it.
Neither Lord Garth nor Lady Sabrina looked her way, they were all smiling up at him. "Sire," they said simultaneously with a bow when he got close enough.
He glanced at Mauve and she had a bright look on her face as if to tell him she was fine. He held his tongue and slid into his seat.
His brows dipped a little. Why did it bother him that her seat had been usurped? It was just a chair, it really shouldn’t make that much difference.
They sat down and she did the same. He noticed her glance at him from the corner of his eyes. She looked away immediately and kept her head down.
The servants moved quickly, dishing out the food. They served him first then Lady Sabrina, her father, Erick, and Mauve last. This wasn’t unusual but for some reason, it was glaring today.
"Sire," he heard a low sound. "Sire," the voice repeated, sounding urgent.
He pulled himself out of his thoughts. "Lord Garth," he responded.
