The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 228. Scars
Chapter 228: 228. Scars
Mauve kept her eyes glued to Jael’s back, watching him leave the room without so much as a glance in her direction. Her arms were still around her knees.
She closed her eyes and rocked herself back and forth. She stopped rocking and rested her head on her knees as her thoughts churned.
Jael had looked at her like he knew something. That was a weird question to ask her suddenly. Was she reading too much into the question and he had just been concerned about her?
There was no reason for her to be worried, however, the unexpectant question had completely caught her off guard and she had needed a second to recover. She was sure her delay was suspicious but Jael had not mentioned anything about it.
Did he really think she was hiding something from him? She shook her head and let go of her knees. She straightened her legs, threw them out the side of the bed, and got out of bed.
She slowly made her way to the dresser and took a seat, picking up the ball of yarn and the pin. She got to work, it was easier to be busy with her hands than let her thoughts get out of hand.
Things were better with Jael, she blushed slightly as she remembered how he held her. They were fine and they did not have any disagreement right now but still, the anxious feeling didn’t leave her.
Mauve had her head bent forward for more than a half hour before a knock roused her. It wasn’t so loud but because she was engrossed she jerked in fright.
Mauve brought her hand to her chest, laughing slightly. She couldn’t believe she had been that frightened because of a knock but she knew it had more to do with what she had been thinking about.
"Come in," she called out and Mill turned the handle and walked in. "Mill," she cried, rushing to her feet.
"No," Mill cried but it was too late as the ball of yarn rolled off Mauve’s legs and onto the floor.
"Oh, no," Mauve said, watching it go.
It kept rolling, leaving a trail of yarn in its wake, and didn’t stop until Mill got it. She picked it up and started undoing the mess.
She rolled it up as she walked to Mauve and by the time she got to where the princess stood the yarn was all rolled up.
"Thank you," Mauve said brightly. She accepted the ball from Mill’s outstretched hand and placed the items on the dressing table.
She then pulled out a drawer and carefully arranged them into it. She closed the drawer shut and turned around to see Mill staring intensely at her.
"Someone seems to have gotten into knitting," she said with a hint of a smile on her lips.
"I haven’t," Mauve replied. "In case you didn’t notice, I am absolutely terrible at it."
"You started yesterday, you’re allowed to be terrible. Yasmin apologizes for not being able to help you out today and to be honest, I didn’t think I would find you here."
Mauve doubted Yasmin actually issued an apology. "What do you mean? I stay in my room mostly."
Mauve didn’t want to admit it but if Jael hadn’t dropped by her room, she would have gone to the library or garden at some point.
"If you say so," Mill said. "The second meal will be ready in a few minutes, I figured you might want a few things done before you head downstairs."
Mauve nodded her head immediately and turned to look at Mill. They had guests there was no way she could wear the usual.
Normally, she would have gone out to welcome them but this wasn’t a normal situation, and doubted the vampires would appreciate her kind gesture.
"Yes please," she replied and Mill smiled in response.
She walked to the wardrobe and pulled out the first dress her hand touched. "What do you think about this?" She asked Mauve.
"Absolutely not!" Mauve said sternly.
"Why, what’s wrong with it?" Mill asked with a raised brow looking at Mauve and then back at the dress.
It was a pale purple dress. The dress was long enough to go below the knees and the sleeves were just enough to cover half her arms.
Mauve frowned slightly, "Are you really asking? I can’t show up to the second meal with my fresh scars completely visible."
"Oh," Mill said expressionless, it was obvious she wanted to say more but she didn’t.
She returned the dress and picked out another dress. It was a similar color, however, this dress was longer and the sleeves were also longer.
"Is this better?" Mill asked sarcastically.
Mauve’s lips formed a thin line before she responded, "Yes, thank you." She bowed her head a little.
"You’re welcome," Mill replied and walked closer to her with the dress in hand.
She helped Mauve out of the old dress leaving only her underwear on. She put the dress over Mauve’s head and pulled it down.
The dress slid down easily and she adjusted it so it will fit Mauve perfectly. Mill smiled briefly, satisfied with her work before stepping away from Mauve.
"Have a seat," she ordered. "I will take care of your hair."
Mauve nodded and Mill adjusted the seat for her. Mauve sat down and stared at the Mirror.
"Do you have anything specific in mind?" The vampire asked.
"Nope, I trust you," Mauve said with bright eyes.
Mill chuckled and picked up the brush. "You know," she started to say as she brushed Mauve’s hair. "You don’t have to keep your scars covered."
Mauve closed her eyes briefly, "I know," she replied. "It will just need some getting used to."
Mauve stiffened her shoulder as she spoke. She didn’t want to talk about the subject. She was still very self-conscious about it and knew she wasn’t ready to deal with that just yet. Covering it up made her feel better.
Mill simply nodded and didn’t drag the situation any further. She just brushed Mauve’s hair in silence. "You’re ready," she announced after a couple of minutes.
Mauve opened her mouth to say her thanks and her room door was thrown open. For a second she was worried it would fly off its hinges.
