Chapter 227. Lord Garth Arrives

Chapter 227: 227. Lord Garth Arrives

"Are you sure there isn’t anything you’re keeping away from me?"

Jael stared down at Mauve as he asked the question. He tried to keep a straight face at her reaction but he could see the confusion and slight fear in her eyes. He also did not miss the sudden rise of her heartbeat.

There was something even if it wasn’t what he might be thinking. The worst part was he didn’t have a single clue what this might be about. His brows dipped slightly as he waited for her to speak.

He had accompanied her to see the physician because he thought she probably had something to tell him and to also prevent the physician from giving Mauve any kind of hint toward his request.

He didn’t think he would get any response from her but he wanted to see if she was willing to tell him.

The silence dragged on for a second and just as she was about to open her mouth to speak a long knock rang out. Jael made no move to answer the door.

He raised her brow to show he was waiting for her response.

She looked away from him, "No, I am not."

He frowned and wanted to say more but another knock rang out, persistent. "Come in," he called out.

He already knew who was behind the door and he was shocked they decided to stay behind.

The door pushed open and Erick walked in with red eyes. "Lord Garth is here." He announced stiffly, not bothering to hide his animosity.

"Lord Erick," Mauve said and tried to scramble out of Jael’s legs and out of his grasp but he held her tight.

Mauve had no choice but to remain between his legs as Erick walked further into the room. She kept her head down, not wanting to look Erick in the eye.

"Alone?" Jael asked with a raised eyebrow. His arms were still wrapped around Mauve’s chest.

"No," Erick responded, his eyes never straying from Mauve. Jael felt her shrink.

"Erick," Jael called sternly and the vampire finally looked at him. "I understand that you’re in a foul mood but if you don’t deliver the message properly, I can assure you, you’ll be worse than you are now."

Erick quickly shook his head, "I apologize, Sire." He sent a glare to Mauve before he continued. "Lord Garth is here with Lady Sabrina."

Jael frowned, "Not his mate?"

Erick shook his head, "No, neither has he mentioned her."

"Alright, I will be out soon. Wait outside." Jael said with a slightly puzzled expression.

Erick nodded and bowed with his shoulders moderately. He turned to look at Mauve, their eyes met briefly and she looked away. Jael watched the situation with a raised brow.

She turned to see him looking at her. "Is something wrong?" She asked and tucked her hair behind her ear.

"No," Jael said and unwrapped his hands from her body as he got out of the bed. He stood over her and leaned forward.

She looked up at him with big brown eyes, her mouth puckering a little. Her knees were bent and her arms rested on them. Jael let his eyes trail her outline as he fought the urge to scoop her in his arms.

He looked at her shoulder, only a bit of her scars were poking out of her dress. The sleeves were long enough to keep the scars hidden.

He stretched out his hand to touch her injured shoulder but held back. "I will see you during the second meal."

She nodded and he touched her cheek instead before standing to his full height. He walked out of the room without a backward glance.

"Sire," Erick said as soon as he stepped out. "I will lead you to him. He is waiting."

Jael frowned, he was just going to see Lord Garth briefly to welcome him but the Lord was waiting for him, which meant something was up.

"Why is he waiting and not in his room?" Jael asked.

"He refuses, I had to ask him to wait. He wanted to come to you himself."

Jael blinked, "Did he say anything?"

Erick shook his head, "No, he didn’t. He looked a little anxious."

"Anxious?"

Erick nodded.

"Fine, lead me to him." It was best to get this over with as much as he would rather not have to deal with this right now, it seemed he didn’t have much of a choice.

He couldn’t comprehend what Lord Garth was possibly anxious about that the Lord had to see him immediately.

Erick led him down the stairs and knocked twice on the door of the drawing room before turning the handle and walking in.

Jael walked through the door behind Erick to see the Lord pacing back and forth while his daughter sat with her legs crossed and her blond hair tied in a bun.

Her hair looked windblown and a lot of strands had escaped from the bun. She rose to her feet as soon her eyes rested on Jael while her father rushed to him.

"Your Grace," the older vampire said. His eyes twinkled to match his slightly brightened face.

He still has a worried expression on his face and Jael could tell why Erick said he seemed anxious.

"Lord Garth, is something wrong?" Jael asked as he slowly approached the older vampire rushing to him.

"Your Grace," he repeated, stopping directly in front of Jael with his arms raised. "You’re in one piece," he exclaimed.

Jael frowned, "Of course, I am. I’m sure I assured you that nothing is amiss in the letter."

"I know, I just needed to see with my own eyes." Lord Garth said with a smile.

"Your Grace," Lady Sabrina said, drawing his attention to her. "Thank you for welcoming us into your abode." She curtsied, going unnecessarily low.

The side of Jael’s upper lip lifted slightly, "I hope the journey here wasn’t strenuous."

"Not at all," Lady Sabrina said, standing to her full height.

"Get some rest, the second meal will be ready in about an hour. If you need anything, the servants will attend to you. I’m glad you got here without incident."
