Chapter 226: 226. An Unexpected Question

Mauve knocked softly as they stopped in front of Jean’s room. This was the first time she would be coming all the way to his room.

His room was right next to Lady Jevera’s. Mauve found herself staring at the door a little bit longer than she should have.

Mauve heard loud scrambling at her knock, followed by a loud thud as if something heavy fell to the ground. She and Jael exchanged glances.

"Jean," she called out. "Is everything okay?" She asked, a little horrified by what could possibly be happening behind the door.

"Yes," his voice said and seconds later the door was thrown open.

"Princess, is something the matter?" He asked as he opened the door.

She shook her head, "Is this a wrong time? I can come back later." She fought the urge to stand on her tiptoes and look over his shoulder.

"No, it’s perfectly..." The rest of his words trailed as he noticed Jael standing a few feet behind her.

"Your Grace," Jean blubbered. "I-I didn’t notice you there."

Jael smiled stiffly, "I am sure you had other more important things on your mind."

"I apologize..." Jean started to say.

"Don’t waste your breath. Mauve is here to say her goodbyes. Now do it and let’s leave as you can see..." he paused and looked at her. "Jean is quite busy."

"Yeah," she nodded rapidly. "Sorry to interrupt you but I don’t want you to leave without saying anything. Thank you for treating me and I wish you a safe trip back."

"You’re too kind, princess, you didn’t have to," Jean replied, his eyes glancing at Jael before quickly looking away.

"It’s fine, I wanted to. Give my greetings to your wife." She finished with a smile.

The physician seemed a little nervous but he always seemed that way when Jael was around so she didn’t put much thought into it.

Besides, she was mostly getting into his way of getting all set up to leave. Anybody would be anxious to return home.

Jean nodded at her and she backed away before he slipped back into the room and closed the door.

Mauve grabbed her dress tighter as her thought strayed. Would she ever have a reason to return to her father’s castle?

Not that she actively wanted to go back. There was nothing for her there but it was a nice thought.

She would be lying if she said she didn’t miss anything. She didn’t particularly but it held all her childhood memories, mostly bad but they were still her memories.

She looked at Jael and he winked at her. She smiled softly and leaned into him. He was annoying but she knew she would be here for as long as he wanted her to be.

"Are you okay?" He asked, she could hear the irritation in his voice.

"Why?" She asked softly, there was an unexpected catch in her voice and she wasn’t the only one who heard it.

"Are you really going to miss the physician that much?"

"What? No. I am just happy he gets to go home. He looked like he couldn’t wait to leave."

"Hmm," he replied and she raised her head to look at him.

He looked down at her and she grabbed his hand. They walked down the stairs together and didn’t stop walking until they came in front of her room.

Jael pushed the door open and Mauve tried not to show her surprise when he walked into the room with her.

She tried to return to her seat by the dresser but he didn’t let her go. Instead, he dragged her to the bed and they got into bed together.

He sat on the bed with his back to the headboard and pulled her into the bed so she was sitting between his legs with her back to him.

"Jael?" She called as he wrapped his arms around her.

"Hmm," he replied.

"Are you sure nothing is wrong?" She asked.

"Nothing is," he replied. "Just stay."

She nodded and leaned backward resting her head on his shoulders as he leaned into her neck. She felt his cold nose tickle the side of her face and resisted the urge to laugh.

"You’re so warm," he whispered, his breath grazing her face. "I can still feel the heat of your body through your clothes."

He moved his nose over her skin breathing her in. She leaned further into him, enjoying his cold embrace.

"You’re cold." She replied, chuckling slightly.

"I know, does that bother you?" He asked, his head freezing slightly as he waited for her response.

She shook her head, "No, except sometimes it feels like you’re stealing my warmth."

"Who wouldn’t?" He replied and wrapped his hands around her tighter.

"You’re lucky it’s not cold yet, so I don’t mind your body temperature."

He licked her neck in response.

"Jael," she cried, giggling slightly. She turned her head to the side a little to look at him.

He stopped and looked back at her. "What?" He asked at her odd expression.

"Nothing," she responded and looked away.

"Your heart is beating faster," he replied.

"It’s because you’re so close." She replied and looked away from him.

"If you’re thinking in that direction, I can do something about it." He yelled and licked her neck.

"No," she yelled out in horror and covered her neck.

"I’m not going for a drink," he muttered.

"I know but I can tell you’re having ideas."

"Ah, you can feel it?" He asked with smugness.

"Of course, I can feel it." She replied, annoyed.

"Are you sure about that?" He smirked. "I can make you feel it even more."

"Jael!" Mauve cried and covered her face. She was red to the tip of her nose.

He chuckled and pulled his head away so he was resting back on the headboard while her head lay on his chest. They held this position for a while Mauve tried to listen to his slow-beating heart.

"Are you sure there isn’t anything you’re keeping away from me?" Jael suddenly asked after some time, looking down at her.

Mauve’s eyes flew open as she looked up at Jael. His expression was unreadable in the light the candle on the bedside table provided.
