Chapter 205. It Doesn’t Smell Like Flowers

Chapter 205: 205. It Doesn’t Smell Like Flowers

"Pardon my impertinence, Your Grace but I can’t help but notice that my cousin, Lady Jevera neither returned with you nor ahead of you. Is there a particular reason why?"

Erick stayed a good distance away and with his posture it was obvious that he did not intend to come any closer as he asked the question. Jael thought it was a good thing Erick realized the risk that the question posed to him.

He brought the letter down to the table and glared at Erick as he leaned back in his seat. "Why do you think I owe you an explanation?"

His hands remained on the table holding the letter. He was holding it tighter now as he watched Erick squirm a little under his gaze.

"I don’t think you do, Sire. I apologize if it seemed that way. I was merely curious as to why she didn’t return. It has been three weeks, it’s unlike her to stay away from the castle for so long."

Erick was rambling and Jael could feel a tic in his neck. He neither had the time nor the patience for this. It was not his place to placate them in the ideas they had about him and what he should do.

"You do know why, don’t you? And you merely want to confirm what you’ve heard and it’s exactly like that. Now, if you do not have any more personal questions to ask, go through these letters. You seem to have a lot of free time to ponder about inconsequential things."

Even though Erick was one of his personal guards, he was still a Lord, therefore it wasn’t completely inappropriate to ask these types of questions. It didn’t make the question any less annoying.

"I know this will only anger you more, your Grace but I can’t help but wonder why now? She’s been in and away from the castle several times, why chase her away now?"

Jael brought the letter closer to his face. "The fact that you think I have to explain myself to you is preposterous. I’ll let it slide because you’ve been quite useful these past few days. If you intend to speak again, it better be about the damn letters."

"I apologize," Erick said with a bow.

Jael frowned as he looked through the side of the letter at Erick’s face, he could visibly see the wheels turning in the vampire’s head.

He returned his head to the letter, unfazed. He truly didn’t care what anyone thought. He had a duty to himself. Whatever expectation they had, they could rightly shove it up their own arses.

This wasn’t surprising, he was sure a number of the Lords expected him to pick Jevera as his mate and Erick was no exception. However, he didn’t think the vampire would be this concerned about it.

Still, he would be lying if he said he didn’t notice Erick’s piety in that direction and he wondered if it was because Jevera was his cousin.

He found it humorous as they were always at loggerheads. Jael frowned, that was most likely Erick’s fault that anything else. The lad was always fighting with everyone.

The memory of how Erick became his personal guard flashed through his head. The vampire hasn’t changed much.

Erick approached the table with a sullen look on his face. He stopped in front of it, standing opposite Jael as he began sorting the letters on the table.

Jael winced at the sight of them. This was getting out of hand. He wasn’t obligated to respond to any of them but considering how riled up they already were it would be best if he did.

There was also the fact that they had been ambushed by Palers on his way from Lord Levaton’s residence. He could count on Lord Levaton’s discretion for as long as it benefits him.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t something that could stay hidden forever and he was certain most of the Lords had gotten wind of the incident even without Lord Levaton divulging the details of it.

Jael ran his fingers through his hair. This was becoming more of a hassle by the day and there was still no progress in finding the paler’s weakness. It didn’t make sense that something was unkillable.

The fire worked to some extent but it wasn’t an efficient means if they wanted to fight against them. They still had to rely on the sun to completely get rid of it.

He was counting on Kieran to find him something useful, something he could actually use in the fight against them.

However, there was the chance that Kieran might never find anything. He would have to get to work with the little information he had sooner than later. He couldn’t sit still for too long.

...

"Princess," Jean said as he stopped in front of her. He bowed slightly.

After a couple of seconds, he added, "I have to check your arm, princess."

"Ah, I apologized. I forgot it was covered. I hope this type of clothing won’t affect the healing process."

"As long as it doesn’t catch on the wound, there shouldn’t be any problem. Your arm is mostly healed so you won’t have to worry too much about the clothes you wear except of course tight clothes. I still won’t recommend that at least until you don’t feel any pain when pressure is applied."

"I understand," Mauve said.

"It shouldn’t be long now, a couple more days and you should be good as new." He said with a huge smile.

"Well, I wouldn’t say new," Mauve said with a sad smile. "How do you find your stay at the castle? I do hope it is to your liking." She quickly changed the subject.

Jean looked her in the face and smiled briefly, "I couldn’t ask for better."

"The room you’re assigned to is comfortable, right? If you have any requests, I can try to see what I can do about it."

"No, princess. You don’t have to concern yourself. I am absolutely fine, thank you."

"That is good to hear, however, I am sure you miss your family greatly."

"Yeah, I do. It’s only typical, I don’t think I have been away from my wife for this long ever since we married."

"Well, if what you say is true you should be able to return in a week or less. I’m sure you can barely wait." She replied.

Jean’s lips formed a thin line, "I don’t think I can leave that quickly."

"Why not? There would be no reason to keep you here and it must have been hard to come here on such quick notice."

It wasn’t like she was chasing him off but for the past couple of days, he had not done anything that Mill couldn’t handle and she knew about his family even though he tended to be discreet about them she also knew he was the only proper physician in his village.

A soft knock and Mill walked in. "Sorry, I am late. I just found out that the first meal is over."

"Mill," Mauve said with a bright smile.

"Jean, I see you’re here already." She said as she walked closer. "Is anything wrong?"

"No," Mauve shook her head. "I need help getting out of this so he can check it."

Mill tried not to roll her eyes but failed woefully. "I told you something with less coverage."

"Jean said it’s fine." Mauve cried and turned to the physician with hopes that he would back her up.

He nodded and Mauve turned back to look at Mill with triumph in her eyes.

"I will be right outside, please call me back when you’re ready," Jean said and walked to the door.

Mill moved quickly, changing her into something that revealed most of her arm even though the short sleeve had to be gathered at the top. She walked away from Mauve and toward the door.

Jean walked through the open door moments later and briskly approached Mauve. His expression didn’t change much as he laid eyes on his arm.

He looked up at Mauve’s face and nodded. "There isn’t anything I can say about it. We just have to wait for the healing process to be over."

Mauve nodded, "Thank you."

"If you have any worries or concerns, don’t hesitate to ask for me. I am at your beck and call, princess."

Mauve grinned at him, "I don’t feel any discomfort. I don’t think there would be any need for me to bother you."

Jean bowed and headed for the door.

"I hear you’re going to the rooftop today," Mill said as the door closed.

"Yes?"

"I would prefer if you don’t come back with the smell of horse dung, Mauve."

Mauve gasped, "It was one time and it’s only because you vampires have such a good sense of smell that it smelt so bad."

"You make it sound like horse dung smells like flowers."

"Fine, I’ll do my best not to get messy," Mauve said with her head bent.

"Good and wear appropriate clothes."

"Yes, Mill."
