Chapter 199. It Begins
Chapter 199: 199. It Begins
The physician was seated in the corner at the end of the carriage and he gave her a bow as she entered. "Princess," he said.
"Jean," she replied and quickly hid her surprise. It was that she was surprised that he was going with them, she was just surprised someone was in the carriage.
Jael got in behind her and pulled her onto the seat while Jean sat directly in front of them. He was riding with her? Mauve couldn’t help the excitement that warmed her stomach.
"Your Grace," Jean said with an even low bow in the confined space. His voice was a little too loud. Mauve wondered if he would be able to last the journey in the company of Jael.
Jael merely grunted his response and pulled Mauve closer so that she was almost on his lap. She bore it with a stiff smile, the fact that there was an audience meant she couldn’t cause a scene.
However, that wasn’t the only reason she wasn’t complaining. Being this close to Jael made her wholly aware of him and it helped distract her from her worries.
She would be lying if she said she wasn’t scared. She did not feel safe in the carriage, after the last time she was in a carriage, a paler attacked.
"Are you comfortable?" He asked, his breath was on her neck that was how close he was. This completely distracted her from her thoughts and Mauve fought the urge to yell out in surprise.
She immediately leaned away from him, "If I say no?" She asked.
He brought his head even closer, "I will let you sit across my lap. That will definitely be more comfortable."
Mauve felt goosebumps pop out over her body. Why did he have such a nice voice? "I am very comfortable, thank you." She kept her gaze straight ahead refusing to even glance in his direction.
"That’s too bad," he pulled away. "Damon," he suddenly said.
"Yes, Sire." The vampire still held the door open.
"We are ready to leave, start the carriage."
"As you wish," Damon said with a bow and pushed the door closed.
"Wait, where is Mill?" Mauve asked, looking out the carriage window.
"Don’t worry about her," Jael replied and pulled her away from the window. "You will see her when we get back."
She squinted her eyes at him but did not argue. As long as Mill was safe that was all she cared for. She wrapped her hand around her body as he heard a loud whistle and the carriage was pulled forward.
The force pulled her against Jael who seemed a little too happy about this as he held her shoulder and refused to let her pull herself away.
She shook against him as the carriage moved. It steadied immediately and it didn’t shake so much anymore but Mauve doubted, the rest of the journey would be as smooth as this. It would probably worsen once they were out of Kieran’s estate.
There, things could take a turn for the worse. The bad roads weren’t the only thing there was to worry about. She could end up in an even worse state or who knows maybe this was a bad idea after all.
"You’re fine," he whispered.
Mauve immediately grabbed her ear, why did it feel like he licked it? She turned to look at her and he smirked. She sighed loudly, this was going to be an unbearable ride.
"How long would it take us to get to the castle?" He asked.
"Hmm, we never really travel by carriages unless there are a lot of things to move but let’s say over six hours."
"What?" That was more than she imagined.
"And that’s if everything goes smoothly. We tend to have some road mishaps sometimes."
"You’re not helping." She said and glared.
"I don’t mean to scare you. I simply meant trees falling onto the path, rocks, and sometimes the road itself disappears."
"What? How is that even possible?" Mauve asked with a bewildered expression.
"For lack of use. Now, rest your head, the journey is long."
"I am fine," she said but Jael didn’t listen to her as he pulled her against his chest so that she would lean on him. Mauve found that it was easier to not fight him.
"Have you ever been in a carriage before?" She asked.
"No," he said stiffly.
She pulled away from him and looked up at him, "Not once?"
"No, I didn’t have a reason to. Jean," Jael suddenly called.
Mauve turned to see the physician jerk in fright. "Yes, your grace." He looked confused that Jael was speaking.
"According to Damon, you easily get motion sickness. Do you think you will be fine until we get to my castle?"
"Yes, of course, Your Grace. I just wasn’t used to being thrown over someone’s shoulder while running at such high speed." Jean’s face contorted as he remembered the incident.
Mauve looked just as horrified. "I am sorry you had to go through that." She immediately said as she realized she never considered how Jael brought him to her.
Jean chuckled awkwardly, "It is no problem really, it wasn’t as uncomfortable as I depicted but I am really comfortable with carriage rides. You could say I am used to them."
"Really? I haven’t been on a lot of carriages and that’s completely out of the question here. However, I wouldn’t say I hate them."
"Likewise," Jean responded with a small smile.
Mauve noticed Jael was not saying anything and turned around to see him staring at her. "What?" She asked softly. She didn’t understand the look on his face.
"Nothing," he said and looked away from her toward the window.
He pulled her against his body again. "Save your strength. You will need it. Take a nap if you want to, you didn’t exactly get enough sleep."
She nodded and rested against him, she wasn’t particularly tired but she didn’t mind trying to fall asleep as that would definitely take her mind off the journey.
