The Vampire King's Possession
Chapter 184. Mill’s Guilt

Chapter 184: 184. Mill’s Guilt

Mill didn’t say much as she helped Mauve get ready. Mauve looked like she had a lot on her mind as she stared blankly at nothing in particular.

Mill couldn’t blame her, the conversation they had earlier was a bit nerve-racking. She didn’t think she would go as far as to tell Mauve about her parents, it wasn’t something she spoke about.

However, she had looked so pitiful at that point and she wanted to help in any way she could. She knew something wasn’t right with Mauve. One might as well say she had been abandoned here.

"Ow!" Mauve suddenly yelled out in the quiet room.

"I just lifted it," Mill scolded.

"I know but when you lift it like that it hurts," Mauve whines.

"I’ll just apply the balm then. Hopefully, it will feel less painful after some time has passed."

"Okay," Mauve mumbled and nodded.

"Ah," Mauve screamed again as the substance touched her hand.

Mill pulled away immediately, "What is it?"

"It feels cold but it also burns at the same time."

"Bear it," Mill said and continued to apply the balm. The smell burnt her nostrils a little but it was nothing unbearable.

"Easy for you to say," Mauve said but she made fewer noises as Mill continued to apply the balm.

"All done," she announced and took a step back. "Does it feel better already?" Mill asked with a smirk.

"Is that sarcasm? Of course not. My arm just burns now that the cold sensation is gone and it makes my eyes water." Mauve complained as she rapidly blinked.

"That means it works."

Mauve’s face fell, "How would you know?"

"A hunch. I will go get your food."

"Okay, thank you," Mauve said and glanced at Mill.

She merely shrugged and made her way out of the room. She returned a few minutes later holding a tray.

Thankfully, Mauve ate most of the things on the tray without putting up a fight. She could never comprehend why humans eat so little.

Mauve was settled under the sheets by the time she left the room. At the top of the stairs, she could see the physician coming up. He was alone, she didn’t think much of it.

"Jean," she said when he got close enough.

He nodded slightly and went past her without saying a word. She got to the bottom of the stairs and Danag blocked her path. She cursed.

"Don’t jump out," she muttered.

"I thought you saw me." He said with a puzzled expression.

"I did not," she said and started walking away.

"Mill, wait," he called to her.

"What do you want?" She asked, sternly. She knew exactly what he wanted but she didn’t want anything to do with the situation anymore.

"How did he go?" He asked.

"What are you talking about?" She feigned dumbness.

"You know exactly what I am talking about. Did the princess tell you anything?"

Mill sighed, "I am neither your accomplice nor your partner in crime. I have decided to look the other way for your ploy, so please refrain from dragging me further into this."

"You’re already neck deep in this. You will get some backlash should the King find out."

Mill’s eyes widened and she gasped, "Are you threatening me?"

"I am not! I was merely trying to convince you."

"Well, I might as well tell the Sire right now and that was terribly convincing."

"No, don’t do that." Danag sounded exasperated. "I simply would like to know what His Grace’s response was. He seemed to be in a foul mood today so I know she spoke to him about it."

Mill’s eyes darted around, "She said he didn’t listen."

"That’s all she said."

"Yes, now please don’t ask any more questions. If he does listen to her, you’ll find out before anyone..."

"Mill," The King’s voice echoed in the dark. Mill felt all the blood drain from her face and bile rose in her throat. Her stomach twisted and the urge to throw up was so strong, she gripped the tray hard. It was all she could do to prevent herself from leaning forward and hurling out her insides.

"Sire," Danag said, looking toward the stairs as he gave a light bow.

His action snapped her out of the apprehension and she turned around, mirroring his actions.

"What are you two doing here?" Jael asked darkly as he stared hard at them.

Danag had been mincing his words when he said the King was in a foul mood. He looked like he would easily murder anyone if they so much as looked at him wrongly.

Mill’s mind immediately went blank and all she could think about was telling Jael everything. She wanted to go down on her knees and beg for his forgiveness at the fact that she was this much of a disappointment.

"Mill was asking about her brother and the state of the castle," Danag replied and Mill felt herself begin to breathe easily.

"I wasn’t talking to you, Danag. Is that right, Mill?" He asked to make eye contact with her.

Mill couldn’t help it, she brought her gaze down immediately. There was no way she would be able to lie and look at him in the air.

"Yes, Sire." Her voice sounded surprisingly steady. "I have never left him alone this long before and considering the antics Mack tends to get into, I wanted to know if he was causing any trouble." She glanced at his face as she spoke but she could not look him in the eye.

"Is that so?" He asked suspiciously as he took a step forward.

Mill nodded, she didn’t trust her voice to not betray her at the fact that Jael didn’t completely believe her words.

"Don’t take too long, Danag." He said as he walked past her. "We are to convene in the basement now."

"I will be right there," Danag said with a straight face.

Jael scoffed but didn’t turn around as he walked away from them.

"Please compose yourself next time," Danag said when Jael was out of earshot.

"Easy for you to say. I’ve never had to keep anything like this from the Sire. I could swear he could see it on my face."

She blinked as the memory of Vae and her brother’s incident popped into her mind. She pushed it aside immediately.

"I really thought you were going to sell me out," Danag said.

She turned to look at him and he was staring at her oddly. "Don’t look so grateful, I was going to. If you hadn’t spoken out when you did I would have spilled everything out to him."

"Still, you have my thanks."

"I’d rather not have it because if I get another confrontation from his grace, I am telling him everything."

She said and started walking toward the kitchen. He didn’t follow after her and she increased her speed to the kitchen.

The servants were busy washing the dishes that had just been used for the first meal. A servant collected the tray from her.

"Oh, what happened here?" The soft voice pulled Mill out of her self-deprecating thoughts.

"What?" She asked.

"The tray, it’s ruined." She said in horror.

Mill looked down at the metal tray and sure enough, the sides she held were all dented. Just how much force did she grip it with?
