Chapter 183: 183. Buried Memories
"So, I am guessing you told the Sire?"
"He was harsh," Mauve said while wiping her tears.
She was wondering why Mill wasn’t asking her more questions. Mill seemed completely fine even though she had just told her, she doubted their relationship.
Mill wasn’t even angry and she had moved on from the topic as soon as she was done consoling her. Mauve didn’t know how to handle this.
"That’s expected." Mill shrugged and stood up from the bed.
"Expected? He didn’t even listen to me. Did you know he was going to say no?" Mauve sounded annoyed, her sadness briefly forgotten.
"I thought of the possibility that he might. What are you going to do about it?" Mill asked with a raised brow.
"I am not giving up!" She said adamantly.
"You know you should just wait until you get better. There is no need to rush, as I said I don’t hate it here so you don’t have to do anything for me."
Mauve’s expression fell and she looked away from Mill. "I am not doing it just for you," she responded. "I also want to go back to the castle. If we wait until I am completely healed that would take too long."
"Ah, I see. Well then five days is a long time, good luck convincing him or should I say four days?" Mill looked up to the ceiling and touched her chin.
"You’re not helping," Mauve blurted.
"You should get out of bed. It’s almost time for the first meal."
"Hmm," Mauve said and threw her legs over the bed. Mill helped her to her feet. "Was it your father?" Mauve heard herself say before she could completely process the thought.
Her father never wanted her but he didn’t go as far as to want her dead. Well, she couldn’t say that, after all, Queen Lale did say it would have been better if she had never been born.
Mill’s hand on Mauve’s arm wavered a little but the vampire simply said, "Yes, my mother died during childbirth. Vampires never die during childbirth no matter how grim it may be but I guess giving birth to two at once is a bit too much."
Mauve felt her heart squeezed as she recalled the morning she had woken up and her mother lay stiff beside her. It was a memory far removed from her.
It felt more like someone had told her a story and she had tried to create what it would look like. It didn’t feel like it was something she had seen herself.
It was blurry and she could neither remember how she felt nor what she had thought at that time. Mauve winced at the memory, it has been years since she thought about her mother’s death.
"I am sorry for your loss," she said. She couldn’t even look up at Mill’s face as she spoke. She was afraid the vampire would see what she didn’t want to show.
"It was a long time ago, Mauve," Mill replied and slowly let go of Mauve’s arm. "Besides, it’s not really a loss if I never knew her. Now, enough about this gloomy conversation. Come with me, let’s get you all cleaned up and fed."
Mauve nodded and followed behind her. They left Jael’s room together and made their way to Mauve’s room. Mill held the door open for her and she walked in to see Jean standing in the middle of the room, he looked like he was waiting.
"Princess," he said with a bow. "You look much better this evening."
Mauve forced a smile. She couldn’t decide if he was just being polite or trying to cheer her up. Her eyes still stung from all the crying she had done earlier and her nose was running.
"Jean," she said. "Are you sleeping better during the day?"
He shrugged, "It is definitely much better than before and even though I wake up a lot of times, I still get enough sleep."
"That’s good to hear." The dark circles under his eyes were certainly much better than the first few days of his arrival here.
She walked towards the bed and sat on the edge of it. Mill closed the door and walked toward her, she didn’t even spare Jean a glance. Mauve figured they already conversed before Mill came to get her.
"Is there any pain in your arm?" He asked and walked closer to her.
Mauve shook her head, there was a pain in her arm but it definitely wasn’t the one the physician was asking about.
"Jean, do you have some balm?" Mill asked.
He jerked his head in Mill’s direction, "Is something wrong?" He asked, he looked very concerned.
"No, it’s not what you think." Mauve quickly interjected. "I slept wrong on my other arm. It hurts."
"Oh," Jean replied, Mauve could see the relief on his face. "Yeah, I should have something for that. Just a moment."
He walked away from her to the corner of the room. After rummaging around a bag, he pulled out something and walked back to the bedside. He handed it to Mill. It was a metal container, Mill stared at it oddly before placing it on the table.
"Please, apply just a little. It is pretty strong."
"Okay," Mill said just as a knock resounded in the room.
"It’s time for the first meal," the servant said as Mill opened the door.
Mill turned to look at Jean, he nodded at her gaze and said, "I will take off the bandage when I return so the wound won’t get wet after I take it off."
"Is there anything else I should be aware of?" Mill asked.
"No," Jean replied and walked towards it. "Just do the same thing you usually do."
"I will be right back," Mill said to Mauve and followed Jean out. She closed the door without a backward glance.
Mauve sat unmoving until Mill returned with a servant. The servant placed the bathtub on the floor before leaving the room.
Mill approached Mauve and helped her to her feet. She started with her hair before she washed the rest of Mill’s body.
Mauve stepped out of the water dripping onto the carpet before Mill wiped her dry. Mill wrapped a towel around her head and led her to the bed.
