The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 182. Mill’s Words Of Comfort
Chapter 182: 182. Mill’s Words Of Comfort
"Mauve, just what are you thinking about?"
"I am sorry. Did you say something?"
"Yes, I said I will have to use some balm since it hurts so much," Mill replied, staring at Mauve oddly.
"Oh, okay," Mauve replied with no enthusiasm. "Say, Mill, do you resent me for keeping you here?"
"What?" Mill asked and pulled away from her. She remained seated on the bed but there was now some significant distance between her and Mauve.
It was pretty obvious the question caught Mill off guard but because Mauve had her head bent, she did not see the vampire’s reaction.
"Surely, you must hate it here." Mauve continued. "You must hate having to come all the way out here simply for me." She squeezed the sheets slightly.
"I don’t hate it here. What gave you that idea? Where is this coming from?" Mill looked increasingly confused.
"Well, maybe resent is a strong word but you must be annoyed at having to cater to a human. Especially one like me who keeps getting into trouble and has no means of taking care of herself."
"I am not catering to a human, I am simply taking care of someone dear to the king. Wait, have you been thinking about this the whole time since I started taking care of you?"
Mauve froze and her eyes glued to her legs. "Not the whole time but sometimes, I think about it."
Mill sighed, "I will make sure to give him a scolding." She muttered under her breath.
"Who?" Mauve asked, confused.
"Don’t worry about it. I don’t hate it here, let’s start with that. In all my years, I have never really left the castle so I am a little grateful that I can come here even though it was because of something that could have killed you."
"So, you don’t hate it here?" Mauve asked softly and peeked a look at Mill.
"I think you are missing the point but no, I do not hate it here nor do I hate you for making me come all the way out here."
"Okay," Mauve mumbled but it was obvious she was not satisfied with Mill’s answer.
"I hope you don’t think I am saying that just to appease you," Mill said.
Mauve shook her head until it started to ache. "I don’t think you said it to appease me but..." She paused and her eyes darted around as she looked for a way to phrase her thoughts.
"You don’t think it is enough reason for me not to have any grudge against you."
Mauve nodded, "It might not be right now but at some point, you must have thought that I am a nuisance."
Mauve blinked as the words escaped her lips, she has been nothing but a nuisance for most of her life and in some ways, she has gotten used to this role. However, it just felt a little harder today and she couldn’t control the words that fell out of her mouth.
Mill sighed again and Mauve felt hands on her cheeks as Mill slowly lifted her head. "I never once thought you were a nuisance."
Mill said, looking straight into Mauve’s eyes which were slowly watering. "It is a little hard to believe and I don’t mean any disrespect," Mauve said and pulled away from Mill to wipe her eyes.
"I know. Let’s just put it this way. A long time ago, someone else thought I was a nuisance and bad luck. He thought it would be a great idea to get rid of me and my brother forever..."
Mauve gasped, she knew what this was. It was the past that Mill never spoke about. She remembered when she had indirectly asked some questions about it and MIll’s reaction to it. Her heart squeezed at the fact that Mill was delving into such information just to make her feel better.
"However, his grace saved us and under his order, we came to live in the castle. Taking care of you is a way to show my gratitude. I know it sounds a little sketchy but it does not make it less authentic and don’t look at my genuine care as an act." She paused slightly as she studied Mauve’s face.
"I don’t resent you in any way nor do I hate you. To be sincere, I am grateful to you that I can show my gratitude. So, even if it is under his Grace’s orders, understand that this is something I do willingly."
Mauve nodded vehemently at Mill’s words as tears poured down her face. It was a lot to take in but she could tell Mill did not lie to her and everything she said was aligned with how she really felt.
Her tears turned into a full-on sob and her chest heaved as she cried. Mill pulled her closer and rubbed her back as she hugged her. Mauve cried into her shoulders like a baby.
She wanted to tell her about her own past too but she wasn’t sure it was something she should speak about after all it was the core of the contract, the main reason she was here, she could go about spilling details about it but Mauve hoped that someday she would be able to tell Mill.
As she cried, she realized she did feel a whole lot lighter, to think that this was a worry she has been subconsciously carrying about. It wasn’t completely expended but she could breathe easily.
She wondered if it was the similarity of their cases or the fact that this was the first time someone told her she wasn’t a nuisance. Her cries slowly quietened as laid on Mauve’s shoulder.
"So, I am guessing you told the Sire?" Mill asked after Mauve had stopped sobbing.
She nodded and pulled away from Mill. "He was harsh," Mauve said while wiping her tears.
She winced at the memory from last night. She couldn’t remember the last time he had spoken to her in that manner. She would not be surprised if this was the reason she was so emotional.
