Chapter 181. Drop It
Chapter 181: 181. Drop It
"Are you sure?" His voice sounded like he did not believe her.
"Yeah," she replied and buried her face on the side of his body.
"How does your arm feel?" He asked.
"Much better, thank you. Jean said he would take the bandage off by evening." She added.
"That’s good to hear," he said, absentmindedly as he played with her hair.
"You know," she started slowly while tracing her fingers on his skin.
She could feel her heart pick up slightly. She has never brought up leaving for the castle with Jael before as she didn’t think she could leave any time soon.
Even though she did not know how he would react to this question she could already feel herself getting anxious. It was a simple question, she couldn’t comprehend what she was so nervous about.
"Jean said I should be able to travel back to the castle in a few days," Mauve said and Jael’s hand on her hair froze.
A full second passed and another. In an attempt to quell the uncomfortable silence, she started to speak again.
"He said in about five days. That’s not so far from now. I can’t wait..."
"You are not going anywhere until you are completely healed." His voice sounded so cold that for a couple of seconds, Mauve could not respond as she was still in shock.
She could have guessed a lot of things but not once had the thought that he would shut her down completely crossed her mind.
"Why? I-I think I should be able to stand the journey back. My arm doesn’t hurt as much anymore and I am sure in a few days it will be much better."
"Drop it!" Jael said darkly.
"We have been away for so long, I don’t do anything here and I actually mi..."
"Go to sleep, Mauve. I had a rough night. I’m not in the mood for this sort of conversation. You should get some rest too, you need it."
The finality in his words sent a stake through her heart. An icy one, the coldness moved quickly to the rest of her body.
She could feel the detachment in the tone of his voice and the words. Somehow, she knew it was best if she didn’t stress it, at least for today.
His skin felt colder against hers and he wasn’t holding her anymore, she was just lying on him. Mauve shut her eyes tight, she wanted to fall asleep as quickly as possible then she wouldn’t have to think about what happened.
It was harder to fall asleep than she thought. The candle completely burnt out and she was still awake staring at nothing in particular in the dark.
She knew Jael was awake too but he didn’t speak to her and she didn’t think he wanted her to say anything to him.
She replayed the conversation several times in her head, wondering what she had said wrong for him to shut her down like that.
She was completely aware that she was the reason he was here. At first, she had thought he also had a few things to take care of here as he was almost always busy. However, Danag had completely changed that train of thought.
Not to mention Mill, she knew there was no other reason why Mill was here aside from her. There must be some resentment toward her for putting everyone else in such an uncomfortable position. Her heart squeezed a little as some memories crept up into her mind. She pushed it down quickly.
There was only so much she could make them take, she had to be careful so it didn’t get to the point where they couldn’t take it anymore and then they would start to take it out on her. Unfortunately, Jael was adamant about letting her stay here longer than necessary. She couldn’t let that happen, she wanted to go back.
Mauve’s eyes slowly fell open, and the first thing she realized was that she was alone. Even though it was completely dark, with no atom of light seeping through the windows, she could immediately tell she was alone.
Not that she had expected less but it did sting that he left without letting her know. She knew this time it was a deliberate act and not because he cared enough to not wake her up.
She groaned softly and rolled on her back. She had slept on her side for too long and it felt stiff. She carefully pushed herself to a sitting position as she tried to stretch her arm. It hurt a little and she quickly brought it down.
It’s been so long since she slept wrong, it felt so uncomfortable. She would have to ask Mill to help her stretch it out. There was no way she would be able to do it herself.
As if her thoughts had summoned the vampire. The door opened and Mill walked in holding a light. Finally, she could see again. She walked closer to Mauve and carefully placed the light on the table.
"Mauve," she said with a hint of worry. "Are you okay?"
Mauve shook her head and looked up at Mill. "My left arm hurts, I think I slept wrongly. Could you help me stretch it out?"
"Of course," Mill said and sat on the bed. She took Mauve’s left and carefully lifted it.
Mauve winced, it was a lot easier now that she did not have to do it herself but it did not make it less painful.
Mill frowned, "Whoa, it hurts that much? I barely touched it."
She nodded and tried to keep a straight face as Mill pulled on her arm. The vampire squeezed her shoulders slightly and Mauve winced even though she was trying to put on a brave face.
Her thoughts were all over the place and she scrambled to put her head over the water of her overwhelming thoughts.
"I will probably have to use balm, I am sure the physician should still have some," Mill said as she dropped Mauve’s hand down but her words incited no response from Mauve.
"Mauve," she called, shaking her slightly. Just what are you thinking about?"
"I am sorry," Mill said, looking at her with lost eyes. "Did you say something?"
"Yes, I said I will have to use some balm since it hurts so much."
"Oh, okay," Mauve replied with no enthusiasm. "Say, Mill, do you resent me for keeping you here?"
