Chapter 176: 176. Alone Again.
"Mauve," Mill’s smiling face appeared in Mauve’s line of sight.
"Mill," Mauve cried. "What are you doing here?"
"Well, Sire had to rush out earlier than normal and he asked me to come to get you."
Mauve frowned at Mill’s response as she only just realized she was alone on the bed. She could barely remember him joining her. She wondered what was so important that he couldn’t even wait for her to wake up.
"How was your rest?" Mill asked, peering down at Mauve.
Mauve closed her eyes briefly and opened them before she answered Mill’s question. "It was fine, thank you," she said with a polite smile as she carefully moved to a sitting position. "How was yours, Mill?" The question was barely out of her lips when a yawn escaped.
"It was okay. Are you ready to get out of bed now or would you like to rest some more? I can always come to get you later."
Mauve shook her head, she did not want to spend another minute on the bed. "I am ready," she said and pushed herself toward the end of the bed.
Mill did not help Mauve out as she got out of the huge bed. She managed to stand to her feet without staggering. Her long dress pooled downwards, stopping mid-calf.
"Did Jael tell you anything?" She asked as she walked toward the door. Her feet made a soft sound as she walked on the carpet.
"Anything?" Mill asked, confused.
"Well, I don’t know what he is busy with but he did not come to the room until I was fast asleep, so, I am assuming it must be something important since he did not even wait for me to wake up. Do you know what it is?"
"No," Mill said, shaking her head. "Danag did return from the castle last night. Maybe, it has something to do with that."
"Oh, I miss the castle," Mauve said and stretched out her hand to touch the door handle but Mill beat her to it. Mauve opened her mouth to protest but she just ended up saying, "Thank you."
"I hope it is nothing serious," Mauve said as she walked out of the door.
"I wouldn’t know," Mill replied.
Mauve got to the room to see Jean sitting up. "Good morning, princess." He said and got to his feet.
"Jean," Mauve said with a bright smile. She got to the bed and sat on the edge.
"How do you feel?" He asked as he moved closer to the bed.
"It hurt a little last night," she mumbled. At first, she had not wanted to tell him but she wanted to get better as soon as possible.
He frowned and moved even closer. "Did you strain it or hit your arm anywhere, perhaps."
"No," Mauve said, shaking her head. "Well, that I know of. I am pretty sure I will be aware of hitting my arm against anything."
"I see, how about now? Does it still hurts?"
Mauve nodded, "Not unbearably though."
"That’s good. Well, it is expected that there should be some amount of pain but just to be safe, I will give you some painkillers then."
"No," Mauve cried with horror in her eyes. "I don’t want to take that slimy soup again."
"Today would be the last day, I don’t think you would need to take it again after today. However, if the pain persists please let me know. Now, please lie back so I can take your wound dressing off and apply a new one."
Mauve nodded and adjusted so she was lying on the bed. Jean looked down at her as he studied her wrapped arm. There were a few dark red patches but nothing worrisome.
"Mill, could I please get some warm water and some towels? There is a clean cloth to rewrap the wound but I don’t think I would be able to remove the old cloth so easily."
"Of course," Mill responded. "Is there anything else you need?"
"No, that’s all for now."
Mill immediately walked out of the door and Jean pulled away from her. He drew a seat closer to the edge of the bed and sat on it. He peered at her without saying anything and Mauve could tell he was taking notes on the changes in her body.
He leaned forward and stared hard at her face. Mauve frowned and unable to hold it in anymore, asked, "Is there something I should be worried about?"
"No, but you should get out more, sunlight would be good for you. However, you can worry about that after your hand is healed."
Mauve opened her mouth to speak and then the door flew open and Mill walked in holding a bowl and some towels. Mauve could not comprehend how she had been able to open the door with those things in her hands.
The bandage change was pretty fast. There were places where the cloth stuck to her skin and Jean had ended up dabbing it with a wet towel to get it to come off.
"You might not have to wear the bandage for long," he said after dressing her wound. "The surface looks good enough to be left open. I will leave this on until you need to go to sleep, however, if I don’t like the way it looks I might just leave the bandage on until tomorrow night and leave it permanently off."
Mauve could only nod at his words as walked away from her. She pushed herself to a sitting position as she stared at her wrapped hand. She truly could not wait for this to be over with.
A knock threw their attention to the door. Mill opened it and two servants entered with a tub and bath water. "It is time for the first meal," one of them announced. She looked toward Mill as she spoke but kept her eyes a little downward.
"Thank you," Mill responded. "Jean, if you would go with them, I will take care of things here."
The servants left with Jean who followed behind them, they took the bowl and the used towels along with them.
"Are you ready for your bath now?" Mill asked as the servant closed the door.
Mauve nodded and stretched out her hand so that Mill would help her out of the bed. Newly wrapped, her arm felt a bit stiff. Mill moved quickly to help Mauve. As Mill lifted her to her feet a knock drew both their attention to the door.
Mauve frowned slightly wondering if Jean had forgotten something. Mill walked to the door to answer it and Mauve could barely contain her surprise at who was behind the door.
