The Vampire King's Possession
Chapter 175. Alone

Chapter 175: 175. Alone

"Are you sure you don’t need me to accompany you?" Mill asked with a concerned look on her face.

"It is just down this path, Mill. it will be worrisome if I need help getting there." Mauve said, slightly annoyed that Mill was about to make going to Jael’s room all by herself seem like a big deal.

"Won’t it be best if you wait for His Grace?" Mill didn’t look very happy or convinced by Mauve’s words.

Mauve frowned, "He will take forever. It is fine, don’t worry so much."

"Won’t it be lonely all by yourself?"

"I don’t mind the wait, really. Besides, if I remain here you won’t get some rest."

She pushed herself off the bed and Mill helped her stand. "I am not weak, Mill." She pulled away from Mill who looked saddened by this.

"Are you sure you don’t need me to go with you?" She asked again.

"Yes," Mauve said, she sounded exasperated. "You should go get some sleep, it’s way past dawn and Jean is already asleep."

"Okay," she said and walked toward the door. "I will hold it open for you."

Mauve squinted her eyes but shrugged and began to walk to the open door. "I will see you in a few hours. Thank you, Mill."

The vampire smiled at her, "Be careful, and don’t slip."

"I won’t," Mauve called out as she walked out the door.

Mauve squinted her eyes at the darkness outside of the room. There was no way she would be able to make it to Jael’s room without some kind of light. She could make out the path as she stared hard but it was not clear enough to guarantee that she would make it to his room without any accident.

She turned to look at Mill and walked back into the room. "What’s wrong?" Mill asked with worry etched on her face.

"I can’t see," Mauve pouted, hating to admit that she might need help. She walked to the table and picked up the candle. The light glowed in her face. It was more than enough illumination to find her way to Jael’s room.

"Oh, are you sure you don’t need me to accompany you? I can hold the light for you." Mill offered.

"Don’t worry, I will be fine. Please stop fussing so much, you’re embarrassing me. It is just down the hall, I can get there myself."

"That was not my intention, Mauve," Mill said, her pitch a couple of notches lower. "I am just worried. Your hand is healing, I don’t want any more injuries before you can fully heal up."

"I know," Mauve replied, feeling bad that she spoke in that manner and said those words to Mill when she was just trying to help.

However, she was exasperated to the point of not caring. Just because she was human didn’t mean she was helpless. It was just a shoulder wound that’s mostly healed, it’s not like she lost the arm completely.

Mauve pulled the light closer to herself as she slowly made her way out of the room. She couldn’t walk too fast so it won’t go off.

"I didn’t mean it like that," she said when she got to where Mill stood by the door, still holding it open. She bent her head and kept her gaze on the floor.

"I understand," Mill said softly.

Mauve raised her head to see the vampire smiling at her. "I will be on my way now," she replied as she passed through the open door.

"I will see you in a few hours," Mill responded.

Mauve walked carefully, she was mindful of the light and herself. Halfway to Jael’s room, she turned around and saw Mill still standing by the open door, staring at her. She threw her face away immediately, she had not expected less but she did not think that Mill would go that far.

She got to the front of the door and knocked. No response. She turned the handle immediately, she had not been expecting him to be in her. She walked into the room and closed the door.

As soon as the door closed, the candle went off, plunging her into darkness. Mauve immediately cursed. Her curse echoed in the dark room. Compared to the path, this room was completely dark. There was no difference in when she opened or closed her eyes.

Mauve stretched out her hand in front of the room. She could remember the layout. Aside from the couch, the path from the door to the bed was empty and if she walked straight she should get to the bed without incident.

She walked carefully and about ten steps in, her leg hit something. The candle fell from her hand she did not bother to check for it, after all, there was no way she would be able to find it in the dark.

She bent forward as she tried to figure out what she hit, she touched it and it felt like a little table. She frowned, wondering what it was doing in the middle of the path.

Finally, she got to the bed and literally threw herself on it. She felt exhausted for some reason and her arm was hurting more than usual. She groaned and adjusted.

She looked up to the ceiling but it came as no surprise when she could not see a thing. She rolled to her side and closed her eyes. All she could do now was wait, hoping he would not take too long to join her.

Mauve felt the bed dip and she opened her eyes. She was met with complete darkness. "Jael," she softly called out.

"Sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you."

She wanted to tell him it was no trouble but she was still too sleepy that she could not form coherent sentences. "Hmm," she said and closed her eyes.

She felt him lie down beside her and as she fought to wake up, she knew she was fighting a losing battle. By the time she woke up, he was gone.
