Chapter 172: 172. News From The Castle

Jael stopped in his tracks to look at Danag who was rushing through the front doors and past the guards with worry etched on his face.

"Sire," Danag cried as he spotted Jael, obviously surprised to see him at the mansion’s entrance.

"Did something happen?" Jael asked immediately as he thought of what could possibly be wrong.

"Sire," Danag said as he stopped in front of him. He bowed and then stood to his full height. "Lord Garth sent a messenger," Danag announced.

"Tch! Why?" Jael asked, he was unimpressed by Lord Garth going this far. It has just been a few days.

"You know why Sire, you have neither read nor responded to his letters. It is expected that he would be concerned."

"Erick already sent a letter back in my stead. Why would he be concerned?" He knew Lord Garth was more worried about him declining the party invitation than actual concern for his whereabouts.

"Sire, you always respond to his letters yourself," Danag replied.

"It is time for a change," Jael said uncaringly. He did not look the least bit bothered and truly he wasn’t.

"Also, Erick is at his wit’s end. He can no longer manage the castle himself." Danag replied, he kept his gaze on Jael’s face as he spoke.

Jael frowned, "He doesn’t have to do anything. He should stop whining and make himself useful." Jael said stiffly. He was slightly annoyed, he had been agitated for nothing.

"It has been two weeks, sire, minus the time you spent in Lord Levaton’s castle. You can’t be away for this long. It will raise concern and the Lords will begin to worry especially since you have refused to say where you are."

Jael’s expression immediately fell, his eyes glowed and Danag visibly shrank back as Jael’s face hardened. "What exactly are you suggesting, Danag? Spit it out."

"We need to return to the castle," Danag’s voice sounded steady even though it was obvious he did not want to piss Jael off.

"Because Lord Garth sent a few letters? That is not enough reason to send me running to the castle." Jael said darkly. It has just been a couple of days, it is not like the Vampire Region is going to crumble apart because he did not respond to a few letters.

"Lord Phelan sent a letter too," Danag said with a soft voice.

"Huh? Who?" For the life of him, he could not remember who that is but he knew he should.

Danag briefly let his frustration show. "He isn’t important but the content of his letter is. He is requesting that the promised meeting be held and he isn’t the only one. Other Lords have sent several letters too."

"Whatever Danag," Jael said and walked away. "I don’t really care for that. We can discuss this in full when I get to the castle. I asked you to go supervise the blood ration for the month and give me a report, I couldn’t care less about what the other Lords think about my absence. The fact that you haven’t said anything about it must mean that nothing was wrong, right?"

Jael looked over his shoulder to stare at Danag with a raised brow as he waited for a response.

"Yes, Sire," Danag said with his head slightly bent. His worry could be seen in his body language.

Jael looked away, "That is the only information right now that is important. I don’t care for a bunch of old vampires’ fear." He had something more important to be worried about.

Jael ground his jaw, it was a little irritating that they were willing to make a fuss that he wasn’t doing anything. It has barely been three weeks since the party, he was not obligated to set a meeting and unless he had something concrete, he had no intention of doing that.

"Sire," Danag called, his tone sounding serious.

Jael stopped walking and turned around. "What?" He asked, not bothering to hide his annoyance.

"When will we leave for the castle?" Danag asked.

"When we have proper information about palers," Jael said through clenched jaws.

This was a lie and from the look on Danag’s face, he also knew this. Jael had no intention of moving from here unless Mauve was completely healed. He was not going to make her travel with an injured arm. She had already been through enough, he was not going to worsen her pain.

"Sire, Lord Kieran can always send a letter or a messenger if there is an update," Danag said with a straight face as he disputed Jael’s words.

Jael’s eyes turned to slits and he glared at Danag. "That is enough from you Danag. If I want to hear your opinion I will ask you."

"But Sire," Danag cried.

"Another word from you concerning this subject and I can’t promise to be lenient," Jael said and started walking away.

"Yes, your Grace. I apologize for my forwardness."

"Shove it down your throat, Danag. We both know you’re neither apologetic nor remorseful. Now, will you accompany me to the basement or would you rather remain here?"

"I am right behind you, Sire."

"Good," Jael said as he walked down the path.

He stopped in front of a door and Danag rushed forward. He threw the doors open and Jael walked past him. "Kieran," Jael said as he stood at the top of the stairs.

The first thing he registered was the stench. The smell of rotten flesh was strong to the point of being nauseating. Well since he skipped the second meal, he did not have to worry about that. The second thing was squeals from the Paler that was placed on the table.

Kieran looked up from the table. "Sire," He said but his words sounded muffled and that is because there was a cloth around his mouth and nose.

"Any news?" Jael said as he walked down the stairs.

"No," Kieran said stiffly. He looked paler than normal under the chandelier that hung from the top of the basement ceiling.
