Chapter 173. Set It Ablaze

Chapter 173: 173. Set It Ablaze

Mauve watched Jael go with a disappointed look on her face. She could not shake off the feeling that he couldn’t wait to leave her. There was also the fact that he didn’t eat. She couldn’t think of anything that could bother him enough to not eat but it’s not like he would tell her if she asked.

She leaned against the headboard and sighed loudly. She looked toward the tray, less than a quarter of its content was eaten. Mill would not be pleased.

Mauve sighed again, she suddenly felt very tired. After all that, it was expected that her body would feel weak. Her shoulders felt numb and heavy. She wondered how long it would take to heal up.

She hoped it wouldn’t take too long as she couldn’t wait to go back home and being stuck in this room almost all day was starting to drive her nuts.

She carefully slipped under the sheets, mindful of her injured arm. She placed her head on the pillow and closed her eyes. Her soft knock caused her eyes to fly open.

Mauve half expected the door to be thrown open after that knock but she got nothing. She carefully lifted herself from the bed and poked her head out, peeking at the closed door as if she was expecting to see behind it.

"Come in," she said and the door pushed open.

Mill stood with the door open as her eyes did a quick scan. "Sire isn’t here?" She asked.

Mauve slowly shook her head and started to lie back. "He left a while back. If you’re looking for him, I think he is with Lord Kieran."

Mill closed the door and walked closer to the bed. "There is no need for me to..." Her words trailed and a look of horror appeared on her face when she noticed the tray.

"It’s almost untouched." She said looking from the tray to Mauve.

"Jael didn’t eat," she immediately explained.

Mill looked like she was about to say something about it but she just picked up the tray. "You are sure you don’t want to eat anymore?" Mill asked.

Mauve shook her head, she couldn’t even if she tried. Her eyes felt heavy as did the rest of her body. It was getting harder to fight the sleep.

Mill’s gaze softened and whispered, "Get some rest, Mauve."

She then turned on her heel and left the room. Mauve heard the sound of the door closing as she fell asleep.

...

"Any news?"

"No, same old," Kieran said stiffly. He looked paler than normal under the chandelier that hung from the top of the basement ceiling.

The light illuminated the creature that lay on the table. There was a strap around its torso, its neck, and its thighs. Its arms were cut off but a little stub could be seen.

They were regenerating slowly. One could see the skin growing over itself. Its legs were pretty much in the same state but like its arms, it was also regenerating.

Its body made occasional jerks and except for the squeals, it looked completely lifeless. Its translucent skin didn’t look real.

Jael’s brows furrowed not that he had been expecting more but the response still pissed him off. "It is still alive, I see."

Jael did not hide his disappointment as he walked down the stairs. He stopped at the bottom of the stairs and stared ahead.

"Yes, it is."

Jael’s frown deepened, they have had the Paler for at least a week and during this period, it hasn’t eaten anything and has been through all kinds of trauma but it has remained the same. The only difference was its regeneration was slower than normal.

"It looks like it will hold out," Danag said.

"Poisons don’t work," Kieran announced.

"Have you tried feeding it its own venom, maybe that might stop its regeneration."

"I can’t extract it," Kieran said.

"What?" Jael asked.

"Exactly that, I can’t extract it."

"Ugh, this is letting nowhere," Jael said, stomping closer.

He stopped in front of the table and peered at the creature. It looked at him through tiny pupils. The whites of its eyes were even paler than its skin and even more translucent.

Drool drooped down the corners of its lips and into the table. Its mouth hung partly open as its fangs stuck out. Jael looked away immediately, it was indeed a sight for sore eyes.

The stench coming from it was enough to bring tears to Jael’s eyes. He couldn’t comprehend how Kieran could stay close to the creature for so long without losing his composure.

"Set it ablaze," he said darkly.

"It might die," Kieran replied.

"I am sure that is the point, Kieran." He said and looked to Kieran, who was looking at Jael with concern.

"We haven’t learned anything new," Kieran said with a worried gaze as he looked down at the creature.

"Well, we are about to learn if fire is an effective method," Jael said unapologetically. "We will get another. Hopefully, one that would be of use." He looked back down at the creature, its pupils were unmoving and the whites of its eyes were wider than ever. "Set it blaze," he repeated and turn away.

"Yes, Sire," Kieran said.

"Whatever is left, leave it out and let sunlight take care of it," Jael said as he walked toward the stairs.

"Of course, I will let you know if I learn anything."

"No," Jael said, stopping as he slowly turned around. "Let me know before you do it. I want to be there and Danag," he turned toward the stairs. "We will go Paler hunting tomorrow night."

"There is no need for you to come with us, Sire. I and the guards are more than enough to get a Paler." Danag said with a slight bow.

Jael scoffed, "Yet for some reason you didn’t find any until I joined in. I am coming with you whether you like it or not."

"Yes, Sire," Danag said with a small bow as he tried to hide the displeasure on his face. However, he knew more than anyone that there was no stopping Jael once he had his mind made up.
