Chapter 158. Want To Be Here

Chapter 158: 158. Want To Be Here

"Are you supposed to be moving around?" He asked with a raised brow.

"Yes," she lied.

Damon bent lower as he stared at her. Mauve felt herself shrink and she instinctively took a step backward. She has never felt uncomfortable in Damon’s presence but she wouldn’t say she was at ease either.

"Is that so?" He asked, his gray eyes darting around her face as he studied her intensely.

He didn’t look like he believed her. Of course, he didn’t. She was literally shaking as she stood. Her legs could barely keep up with the fact that she has been on her feet for longer than she has in days.

"Yes," Mauve said and bent her head. She was certain he could hear the loud beating of her heart. It was loud enough for it to ring in her ears and she was in front of a vampire, of course, he could hear her heart beating so fast.

She blinked rapidly as she waited for some scolding or worse. She already caused enough trouble for everyone. Now, instead of staying in bed and better, she was moving around.

"Hmm," he said and pulled back. His gaze, however, was still on her. "Come with me then."

"Huh?" Mauve asked, throwing her head up. The tone of his voice and the words she heard didn’t match, her ears must be playing tricks on her. "I should come with you?" She heard herself ask.

He frowned at her, "Would you rather go by yourself? You look like you’re about to fall on your face. I have to make sure you don’t."

Mauve reddened, it’s not like she thought she was putting up a good act but Damon did not have to wreck her like that.

Mauve nodded vigorously. "You’re right," she said and took a step forward in what she hoped was the right direction.

He stepped right beside her, he didn’t hold her hand but he walked close enough to make sure she didn’t fall. She could constantly feel his eyes on her as she walked, well, more like staggered forward.

"Damon," she heard herself say to fill in the silence. It was just weird that all she could hear was her panting.

"What?" He asked without looking at her.

She quickly peeled her gaze from him and paid attention to the path. If she fell here, she would only make things worse for Damon and of course, Mill who had told her to remain in bed.

"T-thank you for bringing a physician for me," she mumbled, looking to the side. She was really grateful.

"Hmm," he said.

She glanced at him, expecting some kind of response but he didn’t glance in her direction. She didn’t know what she was expecting but the vampires rarely took gratitude from her.

Mauve looked away and concentrated on getting to the end of the floor. Was it just her or was it starting to feel like she was walking forever?

Her heart was beating fast and her legs wobbled. It was a miracle she was not on her face, rolling away. She staggered forward and from the corner of her eyes, she could see Damon staring at her oddly.

It wasn’t like she felt extremely tired to the point of collapsing. She was just overwhelmed and the more steps she took, the heavier her heart felt and the more she realized this wasn’t a good idea.

"Are you sure you can walk on your own? Would you like me..." Damon started to say.

Suddenly, a door flew open and Mauve felt her heart squeeze as Jael walked out of the door. He turned sideways and his eyes zoned on her immediately.

Mauve grabbed her arm tighter as she felt her heart sink to the bottom of her stomach and rise to her throat simultaneously. Her already fast-beating heart increased as she waited for his reaction.

Time seemed to slow down and it took everything to not rush into his arms like a sobbing child. It was so good to see him that she felt water in the corner of her eyes.

He got to her in two long strides, he stopped directly in front of her. Her mouth clamped shut as she waited for him to scold her or worse. However, none of that happened and he turned away from her without staring for too long.

"What is the meaning of this Damon?" He yelled glaring at the guard.

Damon didn’t even flinch at Jael’s outburst. Mauve just stood shaking in the corner, he wouldn’t even look at her. She was staring hard at his face but he didn’t even glance in her direction.

"She wanted to, Sire," Damon said casually with a slightly bowed head.

"What do you mean she wanted to? She can barely walk."

Mauve felt sick to her stomach. Her guts twisted. He was treating her like she wasn’t there. Was this how far he would go to avoid her?

She didn’t think, she just took a step closer to him and fell forward. He caught her and all her facade came crashing down as she burst into tears in his arms.

She didn’t care that leaning on him this way hurt her arm. She just wanted to rest against him, feel his familiar hands on her skin. Even though they were cold, they made her feel safe. Even if it was the last time, she wanted to be here.

She would think about the consequences later but right now she couldn’t even pretend to be strong. She wanted to sob and cry. She was tired of dealing with all the bad thoughts.

"Leave us!" Jael said sternly and she felt him pick her into his hands.

He was mindful of her arm and carried her in a way that made sure he didn’t put any kind of pressure on the injured arm. Mauve was small in his arms as she folded to fit in his arm. It was a comfortable fit.

"Yes sire," Damon said and bowed. He turned around and started briskly walking away.
