The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 154. She’s Awake
Chapter 154: 154. She’s Awake
Mauve opened her eyes to see someone peering into her face. Actually, she didn’t open her eyes. "Mhmm," she groaned.
He immediately let go of her eyelids and pulled backward. "She is awake!" He sounded excited and a little frightened.
"Mauve," Mill said, coming closer. "How do you feel?"
Mauve winced, her arm hurt and her throat felt parched. She opened her mouth to speak but it felt a little hard to talk. She tried to sit upright but failed.
Seeing her discomfort, Mill immediately helped her up. Mill rested Mauve’s back against the wall so she could sit on her own.
"Thank you," she tried to say but it came out hoarse. She started to cough and Mill looked absolutely horrified.
"Don’t talk," she said and brought water to Mauve’s lips.
She drank some then leaned back and closed her eyes for a few seconds. She felt exhausted, she felt as though she had been beaten up and then tossed around.
"Sit still, I will bring something for you to eat," Mill said and Mauve opened her eyes to see her walking out the door.
She turned her gaze to the man who sat directly in front of her. He was staring at her oddly. She frowned at him, wondering who he was.
"My name is Jean Caddel and I am your physician, princess." He said and bowed while sitting.
Mauve stared at him with wide eyes but didn’t say anything. She could remember getting attacked by a paler but she couldn’t remember specific details. One thing was sure, it must have been bad enough for a human physician to be here. Did Jael ask for one?
She looked around, but she didn’t recognize where she was. She could tell it wasn’t anywhere in Jael’s castle as the room design was different. It looked closer to the room in Lord Levaton’s than Jael’s.
"How do you feel?" He asked when she didn’t reply and leaned forward a little.
She blinked as she tried to process his words, she was still a little dazed. She turned her shoulder and turned to look at it. She could see that it was wrapped in a white cloth and part of it was sticking out of the cloth she wore.
The cloth was unfamiliar but Mauve didn’t think anything of it as her gaze was on her arm. About half of her shoulder was covered and the cloth didn’t stop until it almost got to her elbow.
Mauve’s eyes increased some more. By the looks of this, it was a pretty big injury. She touched it lightly and winced at the pain she felt.
"It was a pretty deep wound," Jean said to her and she raised her head to look at him. "But you don’t have to worry, you will heal without any complications."
He smiled softly at her and Mauve tried to return the gesture but her face remained rigid. The door threw open and Mill walked in with a tray.
She placed it on the table and the physician moved out of the way so Mill could move closer to her. She sat directly in front of Mauve and brought a spoon to her lips.
Mauve hesitated as she stared at the spoon and then at Mill. She could immediately tell by the weird smell that she wouldn’t like the taste of it. She scrunched up her face and shook her head.
"Please, Mauve." Mill said, "This will help you get better.
Maybe squinted her eyes and slowly opened her mouth. Her expression did not hide her disgust. Mill quickly put the spoon in and Mauve almost gagged at the taste.
However, it wasn’t the taste that threw her off, it was the feel. It felt a bit slimy. The taste was manageable but the feel made her want to claw out the inside of her mouth.
Mauve felt her eyes water, "Why does it taste like that?" She asked.
"It’s the herbs, princess," Jean explained. "It will help you heal faster."
Mauve looked at Mill and she nodded at her. She didn’t want to take another spoon but it was obvious that it would be better if she did. She took the next spoon and gasped.
Halfway through the food, she shook her head. She wasn’t going to take it anymore. It was bad enough that she could feel the sliminess in her mouth but it didn’t stop there, it slid down her throat in the same manner.
"You’re almost done, princess. You can’t stop now."
"I can’t take anymore, Mill." She managed to say with water in her eyes. "It tastes..." she shivered as she recalled the feeling in her mouth.
"That should be enough for now," Jean said. "She can take the rest later."
"Okay," Mill said and moved the rest of the soup away from her.
"Water," Mauve whispered.
Mill brought the cup to her lips and Mauve drank everything, she felt very thirsty and even after drinking the entire cup her mouth still felt parched.
"Where am I?" She asked as Mill dropped the cup onto the tray.
"Lord Kieran’s house," Mill explained.
"Oh," she couldn’t comprehend why. Most of the incident was a blur, she could remember hearing voices but not the words spoken.
"He is the only vampire that could do something about your wounds so his grace brought you here. He treated you before the physician showed up."
"Really?" Mauve asked, a little surprised. She made a mental note to thank Kieran when next she saw him.
Mill nodded.
Mauve turned to the physician. "Thank you for coming all the way out here to treat me." She said softly. It was easier to talk but it still put some strain on her.
Jean immediately looked bashful, "It really is no problem, princess. I am just doing my job."
She smiled faintly at him and returned her gaze to Mill. "Where is Jael?" She asked Mill.
Mill’s face fell but it immediately brightened up. However, it wasn’t fast enough for Mauve not to notice. "I haven’t mentioned it to him just yet. He doesn’t know you’re awake," she said and looked away.
"Please, could you tell him?" Mauve said.
"Of course," Mill replied. "I will do so right now. Would you like to lie back down?"
Mauve nodded, her back was starting to hurt. She also felt very tired so lying down would definitely be better. She wasn’t sleepy but she doubted she would be able to stay awake for long.
"Would you like to eat anything? I’ll prepare something that doesn’t have the herbs in it for you."
Mauve shook her head, she doubted she could eat anything.
"Okay then, I will inform his grace that you are awake. If you need anything, let me know."
Mauve smiled faintly at her and closed her eyes. It was easier to stop unmoving. She didn’t even know what to think but one thing was sure, she felt better than the last time she woke up.
The pain wasn’t as intense and she could even stay awake without screaming in pain. She tried to move her arm but it felt heavy so she stopped.
"If you feel any discomfort or if there is any weird pain, please don’t hesitate to let me know. I will do my best to make it better."
Mauve opened her eyes and nodded at him. "Thank you," she said and immediately closed her eyes.
A few minutes later, she heard the sound of the door opening and Mauve’s eyes immediately flew open and her face brightened up at the thought of it being Jael. She could hide her disappointment when she saw Kieran by the door.
He frowned, "Considering I treated you, it is a little disappointing that you don’t look happy to see me."
"That’s not it," Mauve said trying to sit upright but he stopped her.
"Don’t move so much," he said and peered at her face.
She nodded and laid back down. "Thank you for taking care of me," she said.
"You can thank me properly when you’re much better."
She nodded and smiled at him. He turned away and walked out of the room. "Get some rest." He said and closed the door.
...
Mill walked quickly as she made her way across the path. The king’s bedroom was at the end of the path. Mill tried not to think about it but she did recall telling a servant to inform His Grace that Mauve was awake. The fact that he was not here now meant he was still avoiding seeing her. Mill didn’t know what to think of it so she didn’t dwell on it. She was just going to tell him that Mauve had asked of him.
She stood in front of the door and knocked. There was a stretch of silence and she resisted the urge to knock again.
"Come in," his gruff voice said and Mill hesitated for a second before she opened the door. These days it was a little stressful to be in his presence.
"Is something the matter, Mill?" He asked coldly. "A servant was just here."
