The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 149. Too Early
Chapter 149: 149. Too Early
A soft knock resounded in the dark room but Jael did not stir even though his eyes were wide open as he lay in the darkness. "Sire," the voice tried again but Jael did not answer. After a couple of seconds, the servant gave up and left.
Jael turned so he had his back to the bed and ran his hands through his hair. He had barely gotten any sleep. His head ached and his eyes felt very heavy. The top it all up there was a nasty taste in his mouth and he knew it was probably because he did not eat before going to bed.
He threw his legs over the bed as he sat upright. He had stayed in bed hoping he would fall asleep at some point but he did not. He had to stop himself several times from going to see Mauve because he knew he would not be able to handle the situation she was in.
There was still a while before Damon would get here, he hoped they would make it back in time. He placed his head in his palm as he groaned loudly. He hated how helpless he was, how all he could do in the situation was wait and hope.
Another knock but it sounded different this time. Jael knew why, Kieran was behind the door. He didn’t say a word. He just waited, hoping Kieran would leave. He knew he wasn’t in any state to see anyone.
The sound of the door caused Jael to look at the door. "What do you want?" He yelled.
"It’s time for the first meal and since you didn’t eat before sunrise, I’d advise you join..."
"How is she?" He asked.
Kieran sighed loudly, "You can’t be like this. You have to take care of yourself."
Jael frowned and stood up. He walked toward the door and stopped directly in front of Kieran. "I am perfectly fine. If you have time to worry about me, you should pay attention to her."
Kieran looked down, "You know there isn’t much that I can do for her and I am doing my best to make sure she survives."
Jael sighed and took a step back, "I know," his tone sounded low. "Leave me. I’ll come down when I am hungry."
"Her condition hasn’t improved much but it hasn’t worsened either. I have high hopes that she will be fine in no time." Kieran said.
"Kieran," Jael said staring hard at him. "Thank you but I’ll really like to be alone."
"Of course, Sire. I’ll ask the servants to bring up your food."
"No need, as I said I will come down when I want to eat. Do not disturb me!" Jael blurted out and walked to the bed.
"Yes, Sire," Kieran said and Jael heard the sound of the door opening.
He shouldn’t have spoken like that to Kieran, especially after all he had done. He had barged in here with a bleeding Mauve and Kieran had dropped everything to treat her even though he had looked so tired.
However, Jael could barely keep his feelings in check and his helplessness was the only thing he had. It left him unnerved and unhinged.
He stood to his feet and walked to the wardrobe, he couldn’t remain here with just his thoughts. He would drive himself crazy. He pulled out his shirt and picked something he could wear out into the night.
He put on some boots and walked out of his room. He quickly made his way to the front door. Jael’s brows furrowed when he felt his presence.
"Where to, Sire?" Danag asked as he stood at the bottom of the stairs.
"You don’t get to ask me questions, Danag!" Jael said darkly as he stopped in the middle of the stairs. His irritation just increased. Danag would try to stop him.
"I know, however. It isn’t wrong if I do." Danag said with determination on his face
Jael scoffed and walked past him, the front door was just a couple of feet away. Danag couldn’t stop him from leaving. However, Danag was pretty stubborn and if he was to give a direct order, the vampire was likely to disobey.
"Sire," Danag tried again but Jael ignored him. He walked beside Jael, "I wouldn’t advise leaving the castle, especially in such a state."
Jael stopped abruptly and turned to look at Danag. The guard shrank back but the look on his face didn’t change. "Whatever do you mean?"
"I know you skipped out on the last meal before sunrise and you refused to eat after you woke up. I wouldn’t advise that. Not in the state you arrived in last night. You have to get adequate rest, Sire."
Jael looked away, "I don’t take orders from you, Danag, and I would prefer if you kept your thoughts to yourself."
"I-I apologize, Sire. I spoke out of turn." Danag bowed and kept his head in that position. "But reconsider, Sire. We can’t risk anything happening to you at such a crucial time."
"Thank you for your concern but I can take care of myself. It’s disturbing that you’re this worried."
"For the princess!" Danag blurted out. "It’s best if you’re close by." His voice dropped a notch.
Jael closed his eyes, he wanted to forget the state she was in, that’s why he wanted to leave, and here was Danag tossing it back at him.
He took a step forward without responding to Danag, he walked to the door and the guards in front looked skeptical about opening the doors.
"Sire!" Danag yelled.
"Open the door," Jael glared at the guards.
They rushed and pulled the doors open. Jael squinted at the moon’s glare. He found it annoyingly bright. He cracked his neck and took a step forward.
He heard Danag’s footsteps behind him but he paid it no mind. He walked forward and Danag’s footsteps didn’t stop.
"Don’t tell me you intend to follow me," Jael said.
"It is my job to make sure you are safe. If I can’t stop you from leaving, I won’t leave your side."
Jael threw his head back and laughed. "It is an order, Danag. You are not to follow me."
"I understand, Sire but I can obey I am afraid. I will take whatever punishment you intend for me but I won’t let you set out alone."
Jael looked away from the sky. "You’ve ruined it. I am going back to the room."
He would rather sulk in his room than have Danag follow him everywhere. The vampire could be a pain.
"Thank you, Sire." Jael could hear the relief in Danag’s voice. It pissed him off a little.
He walked back into the house and he could hear Danag behind him. He walked up the stairs and Danag’s footsteps stopped.
"Sire," Danag called.
Jael stopped walking and turned around. "What?" He asked sternly.
"I will ask the servants to bring your meal up."
"Don’t," Jael said and looked away. He didn’t have any appetite, he couldn’t even force himself to eat even if he wanted to. "This, I won’t excuse! I’ll ask for food when I want it."
"I understand, Sire."
Jael unconsciously slowed when he got to the room Mauve was in but found that he could not go in. Even though the door was just in front of him, he walked past it.
He got to the front of his room and pushed the door open. His body hurt but he didn’t feel too good, the lack of sleep was making his head hurt and there was this weird ache in his chest that even the other pains couldn’t drown out and this irritated him more than anything else.
He walked to the bed, tossing off the boots. He didn’t care where it landed. He sat at the foot of the bed and stared at the open window. He could leave through it.
He frowned as he contemplated. He groaned as he tossed away the thought. He did want to know every single thing that happened to her even though he couldn’t bring himself to go into the room.
Jael did not know how long he sat there when a loud sound caused him to stand to his feet. He frowned, he couldn’t really hear clearly but something was definitely happening.
A loud knock and he was by the door side in seconds, he pulled the door and saw Mill standing in front of the door. "They are here, I think but the main gates were just thrown open. Danag has gone to receive them."
She was still talking when Jael walked past her and literally ran down the stairs. The front door was wide open and he could see them coming down the path with a human over one of the guards’ shoulders.
Jael frowned as he stood in front of the door. They were early, too early even if they had run at full speed, the fact that they couldn’t move during the daytime should have slowed them down for at least another night.
However, it wasn’t even time for the second meal and they were here. This was good, right?
