The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 148. The Journey Back
Chapter 148: 148. The Journey Back
"What is the meaning of this?" The physician yelled. "Put me down this instant!" He yelled and tried to wiggle out of Damon’s grip but the vampire held him tight.
"Are these all the things you intend to bring along?" Damon asked and pointed to the bags on the horse.
"Yes," the physician said. He had stopped struggling at this point.
Without saying a word to Zane, the vampire moved toward the horse and took the bags off it.
"Surely, you don’t intend to carry him like this all the way there." His wife asked with tears in her eyes.
Damon stared hard at her, "I intend to do exactly that."
"Wouldn’t it be better to use the horse?"
"No," Damon said stiffly. "I am faster than a horse and once it gets dark you won’t be able to see a thing. You and your horse will fall into a ditch."
Damon took off and Zane followed after him.
"Jean!" His wife cried out.
"Wait!" The human screamed. "You didn’t even give me a chance to say a proper goodbye."
Damon did not respond. He was more concerned about the journey. The human sniffled and Damon feared he was going to struggle but he didn’t.
Damon had barely been running for fifteen minutes when he heard a gagging sound and felt something hot pour down his back. He smelt it immediately and Damon felt his skin crawl.
The physician had just poured his last meal all over his back. Damon stopped running immediately, it took him everything not to toss the physician as far as possible.
"I am so sorry," the physician was saying with his hand to his mouth. His words sounded muffled
Damon pulled him away from his shoulder and dropped the physician on the ground as he proceeded to take off his coat. He did not want to throw it away but it didn’t seem like he had a lot of choices here.
"I am sorry," the physician repeated. "It was just so hard and all that jumping, I was bent over your shoulder so I felt every movement in my stomach. I thought I could hold it in..."
"Here," Damon said, offering him the coat. "Use it to clean up."
They were still in human territory, which meant they still had hours to go. If the Physician couldn’t last a couple of minutes, he was worried about the state he would be as when the journey stretches.
However, this was the only way they could get to the princess before dawn and that was of utmost importance.
"Thank you," the physician said with a little bit of hesitancy. "That’s why I suggested we use the horse." He whined as he wiped.
Damon looked around, they were on a path. On one side was the town and on the second side was a forest. It was still bright enough to see but Damon could tell it would get dark pretty soon.
"What happened?" Zane asked. He must have noticed they weren’t behind him and came back as he had been ahead.
"He threw up," Damon said.
Zane looked both amused and horrified. "All over you?"
Damon squinted his eyes, he hated the sound of Zane’s voice. It was almost like he was happy about this. He didn’t respond.
"We still have a long way to go," Zane commented when Damon didn’t respond.
"I can’t go like this!" The physician cried.
"You can and your will," Damon said without hesitation. "Have you rested enough?"
"No," he shouted. "I still feel like I want to empty my stomach."
"You should!" Damon said, nonchalantly.
Jean looked horrified, "You don’t mean that!"
"I do, we can’t have you throwing up over my back again. I’d hate to have to run shirtless. Even though vampires don’t feel cold, the wind against our skin is irritating. You should force yourself. You have ten minutes and we will resume the journey."
"Ten minutes is not even time for me to rest my stomach. If I had known, I wouldn’t have eaten before leaving. This is why I said I should have used the horse."
"You wouldn’t have lasted in the horse either if you can’t handle such a short run."
"My stomach was pressed against your shoulder."
"Ten minutes," Damon said and walked away.
Zane followed him. "Aren’t you worried?"
Damon shrugs, "As long as he doesn’t die, it’s fine. He could reach there incapacitated for all I care. So far he can give instructions, that’s all that matters."
Damon crushed a big bug that was walking down the path. He spat and returned to where the physician was sitting on the ground.
"Are you ready?" Damon asked.
The physician glared at him, "Will you give me more minutes to rest if I am not ready?"
Damon closed the gap between them. "You stink."
He grinned, "Sorry about your coat."
"I’ll take it out of your payment."
Damon picked up the physician and tossed him over his shoulder. He grunted as if in pain but Damon paid him no mind.
"I don’t think he will make it all the way back."
"He better!" Damon said stiffly and took off.
The physician failed as Damon ran. Damon could hear him gagging but he didn’t throw up some more. He was grateful about that, he didn’t want to lose the shirt.
He got to the outskirts of Nolands, the cave he had told the rest of the guards to stay in, and whistled loudly. He dropped the physician on the ground as he too sat on the ground. He needed a breather.
"What happened?" Jean asked, confused, looking around. "I don’t think we are there yet."
It was dark now, he doubted the physician could really see anything. It took a full minute for the rest of the guards to show up.
"Good to see you weren’t eaten by a paler," Damon said as soon as they appeared.
"That’s not funny," one of them said.
"Whatever. Pick him up." Damon said and stood to his feet.
He knew if he wanted to speed up the journey, he couldn’t be the only one carrying the physician. He would likely get tired too quickly and start to slow down. He needed to avoid that he had to be at top speed.
