Chapter 147. Ready To Go

Chapter 147: 147. Ready To Go

His eyes on her never wavered. She swallowed and he could see her visibly debate what he just said in her head.

"Go get ready," Damon said without giving them time to contemplate. "Make sure you get everything you need if you need money to buy it..." He paused dramatically as he stared hard at them. "Let me know."

"I haven’t completely decided to go with you," Jean said.

Damon shrugged and went down the stairs. He waved them away and he heard them scramble to leave. Just outside the door, he could hear the older woman yelling over the young man who sounded annoyed.

Damon sighed and sat back on the ground. He would have to make his way back to Xanthus Estate as fast as he could. He was just glad, he wasn’t showing up empty-handed.

"That went well," Zane said sarcastically.

Damon didn’t even raise his head. He just closed his eyes as he tried to get some sleep but he knew he was too anxious to but at least he could rest his body.

Damon frowned, he could hear soft footsteps. They sounded like the young woman that had come by earlier. He wondered what this was about but by the sounds of her footsteps, she was hesitant.

She stood by the door for a while and Damon thought she might turn around and leave but after a couple of minutes, she turned the knob. He didn’t stir from where he sat and neither did Zane.

She crept in and stood at the top of the stairs, she looking around frantically. Damon opened his eyes and saw her standing at the top of the stairs, she wasn’t holding any light so he knew she couldn’t see him.

She bit her nails as she tried to stare down but she didn’t move from the top step. "Mr. Vampire," her voice shook.

Damon merely raised a brow, he wasn’t curious about this and he had no intention of making this easier for her. It was also annoying that she was interrupting his rest when it was less than an hour to sunrise.

She took a step down, "Mr. Vampire."

Again? Damon winced. For some reason, he hated the sound of that. He wondered how she would feel if he called her Mrs. Human.

"I know you’re here."

For someone with such a strong smell of fear, she was surprisingly not giving up.

"What!" He yelled out and she jerked.

"I-I... I wanted to beg you not to take my husband. Don’t listen to my grandma, she- she lets her greediness get the best of her most times."

"No, leave!"

She jerked again and looked to be on the verge of tears. She slowly turned around.

"Wait!" Damon said. "Are you with child?" He asked. He wasn’t curious, just wondering why he couldn’t tell.

"What? I don’t think so. Well, I am indeed late and I did tell Grandma but it’s not the first..."

"That’s enough," he said.

He frowned, why did he feel relieved? Is not like he cared if she was and even if she was, it wouldn’t change the outcome he would still take her husband away.

"Please bring him back," I haven’t heard of anyone venturing into the Vampire Region and returning the same way. Either they don’t return at all or something is horribly wrong."

Damon squinted, he wasn’t going to make any promises but he wasn’t going to let the physician remain in the Vampire Region, well, it depended on Jael at the end of the day but he didn’t know exactly when the physician would be able to come back. That wasn’t his problem to worry about anyway.

However, he knew it might take a while. He knew humans healed slowly and if the princess wasn’t fully healed, there wasn’t even a question about it. After a couple of minutes, she crept out the way she came.

Damon rose like the dead when the sun went down. He walked up the stairs, and Zane followed diligently behind him. At least, Zane was talking less. Damon appreciated the silence.

He opened the cellar door and his frown deepened. He could sense humans, a handful of them.

Not that he was worried but they were just the right number to be considered a group so the chance of them acting out was relatively high. It didn’t slow his footsteps though but knew he wouldn’t hold back if he got ticked off.

The path quickly led him back to the counter and he saw it was just a bunch of young men sitting around in the open space talking loudly. It wasn’t like they were drinking or anything.

Damon looked around but there was no sign of the old woman or the physician. The room had gone weirdly quiet at his arrival but he had expected that.

"They fled," Zane said.

Damon scowled as he began to wonder why he let the vampire tag along. He has been of no help at all.

He walked past the counter and noticed the men looking away from him. Neither of them made eye contact as he passed.

He pushed the door open to see Jean standing outside with his wife and a horse, two bags were hanging on each side of the horse. It was a little relieving. It would have been annoying to have to track them down if they had indeed fled.

"Are you ready?" Damon asked and he noticed the young woman draw closer to her husband.

"You don’t have to do this," he heard her whisper to him. "No amount of money can be worth going with them."

The physician did not respond. He just squeezed her wrist tightly and took a step forward. "Yes, I am ready."

"Good," Damon said. "You don’t need the horse."

"What do you mean? Am I going to walk there? I thought you were in a hurry.

Damon closed the gap between them, he didn’t give the physician a chance to process the situation before throwing him over his shoulders. The poor man yelped in fright.
